Wouldn't it have to be "the Adventures of Buttman"?
Many of those stars are long gone from the industry and this movie is often credited as the very first gonzo...so why not?

I don't think that "Golden Age Gonzo" is an oxymoron. When you use the term golden age you are talking about a specific time period in the annals of adult films. Gonzo is just describing a format where there is no plot or extended setup -- the movie just has wall to wall sex.
So anyway, I don't see why there couldn't be an older film that was made during the "golden age" that fit that description. The closest I know of are the "Swedish Erotica" features, but even those had a bit of set-up before the sex.
Just wall to wall sex is an all sex film, which did exist in the Golden Age. Gonzo is a specific genre where the camera/camera man is acknoldged within the scenes and may participate in the scene. There might be one or two previous films where this set-up appeared however, John Stagliano made this format popular.
The technical advance plays an important role. Back in the Golden Age the cameras were so big and heavy that it would have been a real challenge for the dp (no pun intended) to capture gonzo on film or tape.

Ed Powers started the Bus stop series and Dirty Debs in late 1980's. On further review a search of iafd on 4-play shows Bruce Severn, John Stagliano and Ed Powers vid's in 1987/1988.
Randy West starts around 1992/1993.
I think the Gonzo name replace the old Pro/AM name at some point.
I think it's fair to say that the loops which were played in porno emporiums like New York's Show World were Gonzo in nature.
The cumshot was more likely to land on a sweetie's face than in the theatrical releases, for instance. And there was no set-up other than boy walks through door and girl gets exuberantly naked and randy.
So it's possible to see a lot of the porno leading ladies of yesteryear, who you might only associate with plot driven porn, in such moments.
Kandi Barbour, Samantha Fox, Desiree Cousteau, Anna Ventura, heck, even Nanci Suiter (!) did 'em.
I believe that the first porno in the early 1900's were Gonzo. Feature films were shot during the day and the same equipment was used to film people having sex at night. The 8mm loops of the mid century were all Gonzo. It is porno films with "stories" that are the johnny come lately to the porno world. I wore out many a vcr's fast forward during the "Golen Age" of porno and I am glad it is partly over. Saratoga120 is correct about the early 16mm color stuff. The early porno that was shown in Dallas in the late 60's were all not Gonzo like, but true Gonzo. I have said it many times. If a 100 million dollar Hollywood film that pays 1 million for a screenplay can be boring, how much chance is there that a 10 thousand dollar porno script would be intertaining. Wayne In Dallas
I'm not sure everyone is talking about the same thing. The way I understand it, gonzo just means that the cameraman interacts with the performers so it's like some people are just hanging out and fucking and one guy is filming it. Even if there's no set up or plot, if it's like the camera is just magically there then it's plain old all-sex porno. There were expose type movies back when where the stars were interviewed between scenes and stuff, but generally I think if there was any direction noticable during the sex it was just ineptitude or laziness, rather than an intentional way of giving it a casual, realistic style.
I never cared much for the early unformulated gonzo, I would say late 90s up to now is the golden age of gonzo. Just look at Manuel Ferrara's Anal Expedition and Brandon Iron's Good Source of Iron. It's the best thing since the remote-control.
I think this 'golden age' thing is crap, because it just means there was a lot of money to be made - it doesn't say anything about the quality.
Thanks, Gunzo! Honestly, I think there has never been so much good quality porn available in so many different mediums at such reasonable prices. I remember renting VHS tapes for $15 each....each!....for a 24 hour rental.
The Golden Age was over when it shifted from film to video, NY to LA ...
Gonzo redeemed porn around 1990/91 ... though the very first Buttman had a script! I think "pure gonzo" flourished for awhile, and I would say the success of Anabolic made it more of a formula that had less to do with scenarios or personality ... just fuckin'. Soon it no longer applied to first-person camera and was just anything that wasn't a feature or strictly a pro-am tape.
Yes, this is the golden age of gonzo ... but gonzo on steroids. I'm not seeing too much of the artistry that Stagliano had 15 years ago, even in some of those he sponsors ... though, it's good stuff.
Any of the early Buttman stuff is certainly golden. I remember seeing "Buttman goes to Rio" in 91 and thinking that this was how all porn should be. At the time, I was writing scripts and working as a production assistant on feature sets and wondering why anyone bothered trying to make "real" movies when Buttman was clearly having much more fun.
