I recently bought a new computer with a DVD+RW drive. On my old PC I had a tape backup. I ran a full backup weekly and an incremental one daily (I know, but it comes from my mainframe background of backing up everything you do). They were scheduled to run either overnight or while I was at work.

The tape drive had it's own scheduling software, so I didn't need to do anything other than making sure that a tape was in the drive.

Can someone recommend good software that will allow me to do the same thing on my DVD+RW drive?

By the way, the tape drive broke shortly before getting a new PC, so transferring it to the new PC is not an option.

I've given up on "backup" software and now do constant backup in real time. Many motherboards support RAID-1 arrays these days. Plus, large hard drives are so very inexpensive. So my solution is to set up a RAID-1 array with the subordinate drive in a mobile rack. I have a second rack tray with a third drive in it and once a week, I swap subordinates. I also "archive" data to CD and/or DVD (now that I have a DVD burner as well).

I also make a Norton Ghost image of fresh installs so that I don't have to do all the work over again if it screws up or something (or someone) makes a mess of it.

My O/S and applications are always on "C:" and my data, documents, images, projects, whatever, are always on "D:" - sometimes these are petitions and sometimes they are separate drives, depending on the machine. Makes things fairly easy to deal with.
