What are the TOP TWENTY CLASSIC X RATED FILMS in your book. Lets say PRE-1983. I want to build my collection of classics and I figured you would be the one to ask.Thank you in advance ! (: ALSO who do you think is the prettiest porn girl from that period ? Topic Moved by - Flash on Sep 4 2010
Whoops! I only just saw this thread. Sorry. I will put my thinking cap on and get back to this. I'm sure others have lots of good suggestions too. Off the top of my head, I'm gonna say The Ecstasy Girls, Devil in Miss Jones, Opening of Misty Beethoven, and Private Afternoons of Pamela Mann. I love those movies and return to them over and over. I also love Talk Dirty to Me and Nothing to Hide, as a unit. Will be back with more... Would love to hear others' thoughts...
I would have to put "Dracula Exotica" at the very top of the list, as well as another handful of Samantha Fox movies. But "Dracula Exotica" because of its excellent production values, authentically creepy atmosphere, and, last but not least, the fact that Coppola stole much of the script for "Bram Stoker's Dracula." There's nothing in the novel about the Count's reincarnation. It all comes from the porn movie.
I'm pretty sure those reincarnation/Vlad the Impaler/love story elements come from the short story Stoker wrote (Dracula's Guest), and an alternative chapter that got scrapped. I'm saying this off the top of my head though -- I'll check it and report back.
^^^^ Thanks for that bit of monkey wrenching! But it's also true that Coppola showed up at the X-Rated Critics Organization Awards during the early 80s.
Ok, so according to this essay on film adaptations in the Norton Critical Edition of Stoker's novel, Dracula (Dir. Dan Curtis, 1974, TV) is "[t]he first adaptation to romanticize the character of Dracula, presenting him as a lovesick vampire seeking the reincarnation of his lost, fifteenth-century love. The theme was repeated in Coppola's 1992 Bram Stoker's Dracula" (406). ...and Dracula Exotica, we all scream in frustration. I get so sick of the academic/critical dismissal of xxx film.
Update: apparently Curtis took the reincarnation love story idea from one of his own films, Dark Shadows. It says here: "The influence of Curtis's Dracula is really an extension of the influence of Curtis's famous gothic soap opera of the 1960s, Dark Shadows. As Curtis says in a DVD interview, he ripped himself off in encouraging Richard Matheson to incorporate a reincarnation angle based on Barnabas Collins's great love for Josette, whom he discovers reborn centuries later as Maggie Evans." Ok, I'm done, honest.

I'm going to take up GG's offer and give my top twenty, in no particular order, off the top of my head: Nothing to Hide 3AM Opening of Misty Beethoven Sex World Pretty Peaches Femmes De Sade The Taking of Christina Defiance Waterpower Affairs of Janice Anna Obssessed Talk Dirty to Me Exposed F Ecstasy Girls Misbehavin' Roommates Angela, The Fireworks Woman The Dancers Corruption For me, Leslie Bovee is the sexiest woman of the classic era.
My 1 and 2 are Babyface and Taboo 2 then the others tend to change as I discover other titles. I'll alphabetically list a bunch anyway. Amanda By Night American Desire Babylon Pink Barbara Broadcast Bella Debbie Does 'Em All Devil in Miss Jones (widescreen) Easy Ecstacy Girls Femmes de Sade Her Name Was Lisa Little Angel Puss Nasty Lady Playing With Fire Pretty Peaches Roommates Second Coming of Eva (Sweden) Story of Joanna V-The Hot One Vista Valley PTA Also a bunch of French titles would be on this list but I'll just add my fav---Nuits Suedoises aka Peek Freak. Oh yea, I had to think about my favorite porn girl from that period. I decided to choose Samantha Fox, an all-around incredible performer with plenty of titles to choose from---TB
You have no idea how long it's taken me to find another devoted fan of Samantha. Her films consumed me for the better part of three years -- culminating in a quasi romance. Her acting range was incredible, if you can call it that. You see, her personality was every bit as varied IRL as it was on film.
Samantha Fox is great in a bunch of the above-mentioned films. I want to recommend HERE COMES THE BRIDE not because it's a great classic but because Samantha appears in every scene and carries this comedy all on her shoulders. Too bad the folks at Wicked have so little faith in their contract stars of today---T0M
If you're interested in seeing the ultimate Samantha Fox star vehicle, you must get your hands on "This Lady Is a Tramp." Again, she's in every scene and her personality runs the gamut from flirtatious coquette to ball-busting gold digger. I've often thought that no actress in history has delivered as many lines on film as Samantha -- and I'm not limiting myself to porn. There are several movies that she just carries every scene from beginning to end. And, of course, these *were* movies.
^ I listed Spitfire in my top 20 dopey me I didn't read the OP's original request films before 83.Sorry M8 I already deleted such great films and videos to make this list. That being the The Dog Walker,The Catwoman,Fresh Meat 4 (My introduction to Czech Republic Goddess Silvia Saint) and Evil Angel Classics The Fashionistas and Ass Collectors. Now your talking to lad here that based his VHS collection on Hustlers Highest Rating. They had the ultimate critiques in Lonn M.Friend and Doug Oliver.I remember receiving my Hustler Magazine in the mail and reading what the reviewer had to say, just when you thought films were a thing of the past here comes Alex De Renzy with his remake of the classic Baby Face,in Baby Face 2.My point being The Golden Age Porn was from 1970-1985 with a film release coming out here and there up until 1987.Hustler did have to change the way the critiqued with the emergence of shot on video. Now getting back to Spitfire,Samantha Fox was absolutely gorgeous in that Cecil Howard underrated classic.
Ok, I finally made my list. And thanks mcewan for noting the pre-1983 stipulation. I totally read over that. Boy this list was kinda hard to compile! I've left out the more frivolous films that I love for reasons other than being an all around outstanding film. I fear I may have left a few off the main list too - if so, I will update. I hope you all do too - this thread rocks. I'm already ordering a few I haven't seen. Thanks everyone. In no particular order: Through the Looking Glass (1976) Jack 'n' Jill (1979) Private Afternoons of Pamela Mann (1974) The Opening of Misty Beethoven (1976) Amanda By Night (1981) American Desire (1981) Sex World (1978) Talk Dirty to Me (1980) Nothing to Hide (1981) Cafe Flesh (1982) The Devil in Miss Jones (1973) The Ecstasy Girls (1979) Taboo II (1982) Resurrection of Eve (1973) V: The Hot One (1978) Wet Rainbow (1974) - the only xxx film that's ever made me cry. Roommates (1981) Take Off (1978) Water Power (1977) Dracula Exotica (1980) Also, note that I would replace one of these with Taboo: American Style (the whole series) if it weren't made in 1985. :) *** Some I left off that are frivolous and (I think) great films in a way that might get lost amongst all the shenanigans/cheapness: Pizza Girls (1979) Candy Stripers (1978) Hot Rackets (1979) Garage Girls (1982) Stiff Competition (oh, this one's from 1984...)
In addition to Wes making a cameo / editing / allegedly co-directing the flick, the haunting ballad David Hess composed for Craven's notorious Last House on The Left, 'Now You're On Your Own' gets re-used in a montage sequence in Angela, The Fireworks Woman as well. When interviewed in Inside Deep Throat, Wes cops to working behind the camera on skin flicks but doesn't volunteer any titles. If he had a hand in Angela.. I think he should be proud of his creative contribution to that excellent title. It's certainly far superior to much of his mainstream fare (Vampire in Brooklyn anybody?) over the years. Thanks GoreGoreGirl! I've been meaning to watch "Talk to Dirty to Me" for almost 3 years. Finally saw it. It was good, but I really liked "Nothing to Hide" better. I guess the whole angle of banging the lonely housewife in 72 hours was lost on me. I preferred the more emotional story told in the sequel. I didn't grow up on classic porn nor have I watched enough to not trip out when I see someone like Sharon Kane so very very young.

In an interview I read somewhere Spinelli said he used the success of Talk Dirty to Me to make Nothing to Hide, a film he had wanted to make for a while.

Many of my friends and co-workers came out of 42nd Street, and this list is more of a tribute to them than a scholarly analysis. (I do enough of that on the other site anyway, and the subject header here asked for 20 classics, not "the best 20 of all time.") Confessions Of A Young American Housewife Babylon Pink Snake Eyes Night Dreams Cafe Flesh High Rise Alice In Wonderland: A Musical Porno Chatterbox Hot Honey The Violation Of Claudia Firestorm Together Anyone But My Husband Angel on Fire A Woman's Torment Every Woman Has A Fantasy The Devil In Miss Jones Behind The Green Door Insatiable Mystique Roads To Moscow / Twitter: @roadstomoscow
^ If digital beer existed, I would share a couple with you and talk about our thoughts on Angel on Fire. Thanks for the flicks - yet more titles to add to my neverending "must see!" list (a happily futile struggle).

Cool. A few of the titles haven't made the leap to DVD yet, and a couple never reached home video in any format, unfortunately. Trivia - I helped the late great Kiva Art Theatre in Scottsdale, Arizona, make the switch from 16mm to video projection Easter weekend, 1987. Amazingly, they were still able to get film rentals that late in the game. Pretty Peaches II was the last 16mm show to be properly projected there. I helped with the new installation as part of a bid to buy the old 16mm system and rescue some prints the owners had planned to throw away. I am *not* a high-toned adult film historian by any stretch of the imagination, but I'm glad I've held on to these things. Arizona/California summers and Massachusetts winters have definitely taken their toll on the prints (which are all 30/40 years old anyway) but NOTHING beats seeing this stuff on the big screen. Guys like Alex De Renzy and Robert McCallum were incredibly underrated cinematographers (no surprise RM shot for Orson Welles under his real name) and 16mm / 35mm prints, properly projected, are the best way to experience their work. High Rise is a fun film, has that funky counterculture feel that you get more often in early 70s porn. They seemed to still be enjoying themselves then. The only film I don't recognize from your list is Together: any more info?

^ Together (1971) was the first directorial effort from Sean S. Cunningham who later directed the original Friday The 13th. The profits from the film allowed Cunningham and Wes Craven to finance Last House On The Left the following year. I'm not aware of a proper home video release; I have the "uncut" 72 minute version in 16mm. Roads To Moscow / Twitter: @roadstomoscow

^ Also meant to mention Marilyn Chambers makes an appearance in that film. Another Friday The 13th director is on my list, too - Danny Stone/Danny Steinmann, did High Rise before Friday The 13th Part V: A New Beginning. He's all kinds of awesome. Roads To Moscow / Twitter: @roadstomoscow

But then what is? It'd be a fool's errand to even try to top Wing Hauser's scary/crazy performance in that film! Roads To Moscow / Twitter: @roadstomoscow
Please, please, please send me an email (not PM) through this forum. I need to talk to you about this print (as well as other stuff). Maybe you can also stop by the screening I'm doing at midnight on November 5th at The Beverly Cinema? WANDA WHIPS WALL STREET on 35mm.
Fascinating list...CHATTERBOX is one of Tom DeSimone's R rated achievements (and a personal favorite of mine too). And, since I see you're quite a Roberta Findlay enthusiast (IIRC, you posted that you worked for her), you should be happy to know that I have a pristine 16mm print of ANGEL ON FIRE and slightly beat up 35mm prints of THE TIFFANY MINX and MYSTIQUE (though I'd consider the latter much more the work of Roger Watkins' dark imagination than Findlay's workman-like direction. Though I've gotta say, MINX has a killer twist ending and some very fine acting.
