Bill All-Star Member 5334 Posts 6/00	Posted - Jan 7 2008 : 11:19PM I have a Western Digital 500GB external hard drive that's recently crapped out. The drive is spinning, so I'm assuming that there is a problem with the USB connection. I've removed the drive from the enclosure. It's an IDE drive. Now I'm looking for a new enclosure for this drive (I've already ordered a new external drive, this one would just be an extra). Is there a difference between the different brands of external enclosures? I've taken a look at Newegg and see that there are a lot of enclosures with a 5 egg rating. I don't want to spend extra money for the sake of spending extra money. But at the same time, I don't want to buy a lower quality enclosure for the sake of saving $5. Does anyone have any suggestions? [Link]

As you can see inside the enclosure, there's not much to them - probably 25¢ worth of circuit board and cable. Some of them have fans, some don't; probably another 8¢ there. [Link]

Just to be sure that the drive is good, before you buy an enclosure. [Link]
saddlegals Member 7 Posts 1/08	Posted - Jan 21 2008 : 3:31AM I think the thing to look for is the kind of connections it has. A FireWire 800 enclosure will cost more than a USB2, but it'll be a lot faster. This, of course, assumes your computer would have a FW800 card. This may be a minor thing, but you might find the blinking lights annoying when there's drive activity. I sometimes work in dim lighting, and one of my enclosures has bright blue and red lights that get irritating even if I have them facing away from me. If you found your internal failing and are now looking for a new external drive, I recently got the Iomega 33656 Professional Silver Series 500 GB Triple Interface External Hard Drive at Amazon, and I'm pretty happy with it. Click to expand If it's made anything like the enclosure I bought, you can just cut the wires that lead to the LEDs (Or disconnect them if they aren't soldered in) and you won't have the irritating blinking anymore. The one I bought has no ventilation slots and while it doesn't seem to have harmed the drive yet, the enclosure gets very, very warm. I'm thinking that can't be good for the drive. I think some of them have cooling fans. Maybe a good idea. [Link]

I had considered this USB/Firewire version. But it was out of stock when I was ordering it and, since this drive is only going to be used for backups, which will typically run overnight, I don't really have the need for extra speed. [Link]

But I don't have any more drives and I hesitate to spend that much money on the old clunky Seagate I already have in an enclosure. Maybe I'll just take the rotary tool and cut some ventilation slots.
