Ok, I've noticed that New Sensations movies for awhile have been shot using the HD 24p camera, giving all their movies a 35 mm film look. I rented the latest Hot Latin Pussy Adventures #29 from Devil's Films and it was also shot using this camera. Before, Devil's Films used to use ultra-sharp video cameras, one of the best in the business.

I hope that OTHER Gonzo companies aren't going to be shooting their vids with this 24p camera. If I want to rent a Feature, sure I don't mind seeing this 70's film look. But for Gonzo, I prefer Red Light District or Evil Angel's incredibly sharp shot-on-video look. The lighting and especially CLARITY is incredible on video. On the other hand, the 24p camera seems to take the "liveliness" and thus heat out of the scenes, since it reminds me of the Andrew Blake stuff. The lighting is good with 24p, but clarity isn't.

I wish New Sensations would shoot just their features with the 24p film look, and use the crystal-clear video look for their Gonzos. It's a shame that I'm avoiding their Gonzo because of this film look, because they have some of the best female and male casting (Nacho & Manuel) in their Gonzo movies.

In my opinion, Gonzo is more enjoyed with crisp, clearly shot video in well-lit rooms, like with Evil Angel, RLD, and Ana/Dia. So if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Leading Gonzo companies out there, please stick with the video look you have, because it's outstanding!

Everybody should use the camera that Buttman is using, it doesn't get any better than that.

I think Nacho's Back2Evil used a 24p (the Panasonic), and it looked GREAT!

I think a lot more has to do with proper lighting than anything else. I know what you mean, though, about the sharpness of video -- but I kind of like the middle-way look between old digital video and actual film.

With High Definition DVD players coming to market in the next 5-6 months and with sales of the widescreen digital sets picking up (you can get 'em for less than 1000 bucks now), I'm anxiously waiting on some high def porn.

It'll create some tough gos for makeup folks, but it could be interesting to see your favorites in "nearly-there" clarity.

While there may be players/recorders offering High Definition, dont expect any content for it. Its not even supported by the DVD forum. High Def is at least 4 years off.

I too am annoyed at 24P filming on Gonzo movies. It means they now have to use Pulldown on NTSC to get it up to 30fps which causes all sorts of visual problems such as jerky camera movement. Stick to 30fps Interlaced I say.

What I like to know is what's going to happen to mine
and every one else's dvd collection when we all go HD.
I hope it doesn't become irrelevant like all them 8 tracks!

Don't worry about your DVD collection becoming obsolete. DVD is just getting widespread market penetration, plus VCRs are still around even though they're obsolete as playback technology.

There was a compelling reason for people to dump their laserdisc and VHS collections to adopt DVD (superior picture quality, sound, and features). Not that many people can appreciate the difference between a well-mastered DVD and an HD-DVD, certainly not enough to justify buying an expensive player and a new collection of discs.

Besides, as has been mentioned, the format war hasn't even really begun, so it will be years before a de facto standard is adopted by the market. By that time, we'll be replacing our collections by attrition (replacement media) or just picking up new movies on the new format.

Finally, the end result is only as good as the source material. Stuff that was shot in analog will never improve to HD.

Good points, Saki-san.
Not that I'm not looking forward to a sub-$3,000 plasma screen that's wider than the 42-incher that Gateway's pushing. But I hope to enjoy my DVD collection for a while no matter what. I still have about 30 great LDs on the shelf, though, that I don't know what to do with!

Please no. There might be an ADT server in the vicinity.

I am interested to know an overall opinion of the 24P camera look. Personally I like it and I think it separates our product from the rest of the pack. However we are in the business of making movies for everyone not just ourselves. Does it add or subtract from the heat of the product?

Scott,
I really like the 24P look because personally I prefer not to see every ass zit, ingrown hair, and caked makeup on a performer. The more attractive you can make them, the better, and in my opinion it's the heat of the scene itself that's the most important component.

In all-sex movies, I much prefer the video look. The film look provides a dreamy, soft-focused aura that, for me at least, detracts from the heat of the sex. The skin tones don't look right to me either. In Not Just Another 18 Movie, the skin looked pasty and unappealing. Colors were too subdued. Caused the colors in the performers eyes to really stand out, though. Skin tones on most EA and RLD videos are incredibly beautiful.

In story or vignette porn, I like the film look. Rodney Moore has always done real well with it.

Do what I do with old scratched CD's, put them in the microwave for a few seconds and use them as coasters for cups. The microwaving puts pretty designs on them but probably isn't good for the microwave.

I like 24p look for one main reason. All of the gonzo out there is shot on video. Sometimes I want it too look a little different than the usual stuff. I don't watch features today becuase they genuinely suck, but I like the "look" of them if you know what I mean. Shooting gonzo this way is a nice change from all the shot on video stuff out there, and I think it shows that the company puts a little more care into the product, even though it's gonzo. Too many times companies take for granted that the gonzo market only wants the "act" and not the quality camera shot, costume, lighting, etc.

For gonzo, all video all the time. For feature films, film's cool.

I prefer the look of film, when that isn't possible, the 24p is the next best alternative from what I have seen. DB pretty much summed up my reasoning in her post.

I am completely with dikdietrick on this issue: Gonzo should be shot on video!

I really think the extreme clarity, sharpness and warm saturated colors (think Buttman or C. Clarke ) on a good DV camera is perfect form the gonzo style. It really gives you the feeling of being there right the in the middle of the action. I think it is integral part of the gonzo feeling is the camera being the eye of the viewer and the camera being the agent of the viewer. Using a filmlook gives a lot more psychological distance with because of the loss of details and sharpness. I think one of the great thing about gonzo is the feeling of the viewers involvement and I think it is lost with the film look.

So, please please all Gonzo directors - stick to DV video for Gonzo.

I havent seen the 24p stuff from New senasation/Digital Sin so I can't comment on that. But if I'm not mistaken Zero Tolerance Ass Cleavage was shot on shot with 24p or they otherwise tried to simulate a film look. Anyway the result was a complete catastrophe. Ass Clevage displayed all the visual artifact that make film look shot on video suck - blurry/out of focus video and and the wired ghost trails on all movements. And to make things even worse the colors were complete off so the whole movie had a greenish tinted look.

For features it might make sense to have a film look, but I personally really don't care much for features anyway.

A 24p camera is not necessarily High Definition, they can do Standard Definition too wich makes sense in a Standard def. world.
Since this is at tech thread ill throw in a few links: www.24p.com - check out the Resource
link, and www.100fps.com - great articles that explain a lot of the issues on digital video problems with PAL, NTSC and 24p.

I don't agree with this. HD-DVD is only a few years away. To me, this statement is the same as if someone 8 years ago said VHS only provides 240 lines of resolution, so it doesn't make sense to shoot with anything that does any better than that.

HD can easily be downconverted to SD, while the opposite is not true. Using an HD camera to shoot in SD makes no sense to me.

That having been said, i'm really surprised that nobody has developed a 30fps HD camera.

This thread was about the filmlook form New Sensation by using 24p HD cameras, and then the debate took of about filmlook and HD in gonzo porn in generel. But NS newer mentioned HD, they only talked about using a new 24p camera.

Panasonic has made a Standard Def. 24p camera called AG-DVX100 (less than $4000) so as a filmmaker on a budget you can get the filmlook that 24p provides without investing in some expensive HD eqiupment. That still makes a lot of sense to me living in a Standard Def. world. But if a filmmaker has the money to use HD equipment, then by all means - go for it!

All I was trying to say was: 24p does not equal HD. Some HD cameras can do 24p, but not all 24p cameras can do HD.

But the way filmlook is done right now in porn, I still prefer the good ol' videolook in gonzo porn.

Sony has made a sexy beast called HDWF900 and it does all the HD tricks in world (1080 line 24/25/30 frame progressive or 50/60 interlace images), but it will cost you $100.000.
