Is it another VHS vs Beta situation? What's a consumer to do?

HD-DVD is more porn-friendly than Blue Ray.

It's worse than VHS/Beta. Studios made movies in both formats and people could watch whatever they wanted, regardless of the format. So the public actually chose the winner.
Now, many of the movie studios are either owned by Electronics companies or have interests in those companies. So, if you choose one format or the other, you will not be able to watch all movies.
After getting an HD DVD player for Christmas, this situation caused me to buy a Blu-ray player too.

I was hoping this wasn't the case. Both formats look great. Blue Ray is doing a good promotion. It can get expensive having to own both. One good thing, at least both formats plug in and work in HDTV.

I don't care. I just want them to use MPEG4 instead of MPEG2 and fill up the whole disk for movies. So much quality is wasted on low-bitrate video with lots of artifacts when it could have been much better.

With newer stuff, it's all either MPEG-4 or VC-1. VC-1 does such a better job of compression than MPEG-4 does that, without using VC-1, Blu-ray gives up the vast majority of the space advantage that they have over HD DVD.

I find that an upconverting DVD player works just fine. I'll wait this war out.

For a pretty high percentage of the movies that are out on one of the two HD formats, you're absolutely right. Many were either filmed with an intentionally grainy look or weren't re-mastered specifically for HD, so there is no "jump out of the screen" picture quality improvement on those discs.
However, the movies that were shot for clarity & brightness (or are animation) and were mastered well, almost have a 3 dimensional quality to them. It's not the 3D that we typically think of, where things come out of the TV, it's more as if the TV's a diarama. The picture appears to have depth.

I think more and more it's looking like both formats will survive. Eventually players will play both formats. It will be like DVD+ versus DVD- all over again. Now nobody knows the difference because all players use both.
Personally I like HD-DVD better. I think the quality is better. I'm not too well versed in the tech aspects of it. I'm hoping to see more porn in HD in general.

Same here! Watching porn in HD or Blue Ray on 1080i on a 60 inch sceen has to be the ultimate movie experience. The screens are so sharp they look damned near 3D. Nothing like watching a 3D in 3D!

Unless you have money to burn, just wait until the dust settles and one format emerges as a clear winner. I don't really think the market can support two formats indefinitely. You not only have to worry about buying hardware that will be obsolete but also software.

The software doesn't become obsolete when the format dies. It won't be obsolete until the machine that you own dies.
I still have a Laserdisc player and a bunch of Laserdiscs of movies that were never released on DVD. Until my machine dies, those Laserdiscs will work fine. I have the same attitude with my HD DVD's and Blu-ray discs.

Well, whatever. Like I said. If you've got the money and you can't live without 2 separate formats, that's fine. If you can't afford to invest in every format that comes along, you're better off waiting until you know which one's gonna last. Even the hardware is still a little too rich for my blood....considering I'd have to replace my TV to even take advantage of it. I'll have to probably buy it anyway eventually. But prices will come down when everybody has a player and a digital TV.

Forget the Blue Ray and HD-DVD war and buy a Beta VCR.
Because "Beta is better". You can find and buy many porn
classics on Beta for a few Dollars.

Yup. Also, the $250 (street price) Toshiba A2 is a fine upconverting player.

The Big question is...
Is it really THAT MUCH better than regular DVD to even cause an uproar?
Let's face is, Regular DVD is GOOD ENOUGH. The quality is fabulous! I have a 52" tv and my regular DVD's look crystal clear beautiful on it and the sound is crystal clear mint! Is HD-DVD or Blue-Ray really THAT MUCH BETTER than "almost perfect"? Seriously?

^Well, I haven't really experienced any of the HD formats in an ideal environment yet so I can't say. But I don't see how you can have higher resolution without getting a better picture. I suppose the bitrate on the audio is going to be much higher as well. Which, for 6 channels of sound, can't be a bad thing.
I'd also say that the larger your screen, the more you'll benefit. That's assuming you have an HD screen. I don't imagine a SD screen improves at all with HD. Of course, this is talking about Hollywood movies. Not porn.

Yes, your supposed to get higher resolution with HD and Blue Ray... but is it really worth it? Are 90% of TV and movie watchers really going to notice the difference? It's not like were talking VHS vs DVD where there's a huge difference.
I find it hard to believe HD or Blue Ray will even come close to Regular DVD sales... unless, of course, they put ou a multi format player that isn't too expensive. But Regular DVD is such a strong format with awesome quality. I think HD and Blue Ray is just another one of those things where some people get it just to be the bigshot on the block in your neighborhood. I have the bigger electric panel. I have the bigger addition. I have a bigger fence. I have a Blue Ray DVD player. :) lol.

Well, I think all that extra storage space has to make it a better format from the get go. There's no guarantee that all the studios will put the space to good use, of course, but it's there if they are willing to go the extra mile.
As to whether or not people will notice? I have no idea. Some people are happy with 120 MP3 so there are obviously a lot of people who wouldn't. But what's the point anyway? The whole point is to get a better presentation. I think those who care about the picture and sound will notice.
I'm wondering if there are any DVD players on the market that have completely eliminated the layer change? It's noticeable on both of my (admittedly cheap) DVD players. It isn't apparent on my PC DVD drive however.
I don't know. If you're wondering how big the improvement is, why not go check it out? I'm sure they have an adequate display somewhere if they really want people to buy.

How do you figure that? VHS has a resolution of 240 x 720 (172,800 pixels). DVD has double that resolution at 480 x 720 (345,600 pixels) and, HD has a resolution of 1080 x 1920 (2,073,600), which is 6 times the resolution of DVD.
While the resolution of DVD is very good, especially on small to medium sized screens, it doesn't compare to the picture quality of a good high definition picture (such as the first two Pirates of the Caribbean movies), especially on a large screen.

You guys both make valid points. The storage capacity of the HD discs and Blue Ray discs is definitely an advantage. But RandomPecision also makes another good point about whether or not all the extra space will be put to good use. In all honesty, they make for great formats to fit franchise movies all on one disc. For instance, Get all the Superman movies on one disc. Or get all the Nightmare On Elm Street movies on one disc. Or heck, get all the CumFart Cocktails movies on one disc!! :) BUT, will the studios actually do that when they know they'll make much much more $$$ by putting out each movie individually???
Bill, as for the difference... all I meant was that with VHS vs DVD you can see such a huge difference... but is the difference between regular DVD and HD DVD that noticable?? With VHS vs DVD, you are comparing analog signals to digital signals. With HD and Blue Ray vs DVD, everything is already digital signals. I've seen some of the units in stores and the difference just doesn't jump right out at you the way VHS vs DVD does.
In either case, I don't mean to sound argumentative... I just really like this discussion because I love technology.

what I don't like about the hd formats is all the grain, even though the images are razor sharp, they're also swimming in grain a lot of the time.

The grain always seems to be a matter of the original print being grainy. So that's how the movie was shown when it was first released. Sometimes, the grain was an intentional decision by the director and other times it was probably more of a matter of money and technology.
I have to admit to getting a kick out of people on the tech messageboards complaining about a grainy picture when they are the exact same people who absolutely insistent that movies be shown in the original aspect ratio, "the way that the director intended" (this is not directed toward you Roger).
Well, by the same argument, if the director intended the movie to be grainy, then it should be shown that way.
At the same time, it's not a bad idea to wait a little until reviews are available, before buying a high definition disc. If the film is going to be grainy anyway, you may as well save a few bucks and get the SD version.

That's probably it. Higher resolution reveals more detail of the original film so if you see grain, what you're seeing on a digital format is very likely film grain. It's an asset for some films and detrimental to others. In a case where the original prints have deteriorated to a point where they can't be fully restored, for instance.
I don't mind as long as it isn't an artifact introduced by the transfer process or the player or display device. If it's how the movie is supposed to look, how can it be bad?

but look at how macintosh made the come back it did over windows by implementing both operating systems to run on the same box simultaneously and reinventing the way music is distributed. No one saw that one coming at microsoft.
If Blu-ray wants to take the edge away from HD it needs to do what mac did to windows, make HD and blue ray run on the same machine, therefore being more consumer reasonable, and watch HD sink in the water. That's just my two cents.
I have no idea what patents or trademarks are in place. But when Mac tried to own firewire, windows said f- you we'll call it IDE, and still use it.
and you guys are right HD is super grainy!!!

Well I took the plunge and got the HD player for the Xbox 360 this past week... Had to! 170 bucks for the player and the 9 free HD-DVDS! One of which was the Hero's box sex and one was the Matrix Trilogy on HD.
For my sake, I hope HD wins

The next logical move is to join Blockbuster Online or Netflix (if you aren't already a member). They both have an excellent selection of HD DVD's for rental.
Enjoy your new player.

I am not sure if it belongs here but does anyone have any experience with playing HD or Blue-ray discs with PC hardware?
My regular TV is crummy and old and I have no intention of upgrading it as I don't have any new console gaming systems or players.
I watch all of my movies on my computer.
Has anyone got anything to tell me about computer hardware related to playback of "next gen" discs?

Actually got the screener "Lady Scarface" from Adam & Eve today... HD DVD too.
Supposedly this Xbox drive should work on my PC with USB 2.0.
I'll poke around and see if I can get it working, I'll report back.

Oh, and Bill, I'll look into it.
I watched Batman Begins in HD... Fuckin WOW! In full 1080p.
It's gonna be hard to watch regular DVDs again. Although I think the player is supposed to up-convert. Don't know how well they will look though, need to test.

Well the HD DVD drive worked on the computer. Not exactly as expected though... I could get PowerDVD to play the DVD's opening sequence before the menu, but never got the menu. The only way to get the DVD working was to open the file directly with the app. And with that, I had no chapter stops.
Additionally, I couldn't take screen shots of the video. Why, I don't know.
Looked good, but not as good as I was expecting. Looked a little better than a regular DVD in progressive scan on my setup. Not worth the time and effort at this point. So I think I'll be watching any and all HD DVDs on my 42" in 1080p....

Wal-Mart has recently begun selling the Toshiba A2 HD DVD players for $198. [ invalid url ] has countered and is beating that price by a penny.
The A2 is the model that was released shortly before Christmas last year. It will soon be replaced by the A3. For the most part, it's a good player. However, when using it with some TV's with a DVI input, it has a colorspace problem, which causes picture detail to be lost in the nearly blacks and nearly whites.
I have this player as well as a TV with a DVI input and experience this problem (you'd think that a Toshiba HD DVD player would work perfectly with a 3 year old Toshiba HDTV, wouldn't you), so I use component cables which work perfectly well.
Analysts have long predicted that $200 was the magic price point for next generation format acceptance. Now we get to see if they are right.

disc prices need to come down for wider acceptance, joe sixpack doesn't want to pay 30+ bucks for a high definition disc when the dvd version, which looks "good enough" to him, is only 10 bucks in the next aisle.

bfads.net is reporting Wal Mart will be selling the Toshiba HD-A2 player for $100 bucks tomorrow:
November 1, 2007
Walmart's Secret Friday Sale
We may have found another reason why Walmart didn’t want their Black Friday advertisements leaked. In a report from the NY Times, Wal-Mart Jump-Starts Discounts for Holidays, Walmart will be running Black Friday-esque deals weeks before Black Friday.
This Friday, starting at 8am on November 2nd, 2007, Walmart will have 5 items on sale for “Black Friday Prices” at Walmart retail stores. Those items will be:
Fisher Price Nascar Ride-On - $144.72
Sanyo 50" Plasma HDTV - $998.00
Acer Laptop w/ Celeron Processor & 1GB RAM - $348.00
Blood Diamond HD-DVD - $14.96
12 Monkeys HD-DVD - $14.96
Big Lebowski HD-DVD - $14.96

I think it will end up with both formats. The difference with hd compared to the tape vhs/betamax war is that we now have the technology to make players that play both formats but with only 1 drive. What i want to ask you guys is which format has more porn titles hd or blu-ray?

Yes, HD DVD and Blue-Ray both can output at 1080p. However, keep in mind that some of the earlier hi-def porn disks were authored at 720p.

That depends on which player that you have. I have an Toshiba A2 which is 60fps. However, if you have the higher end models, thee most recent firmware upgrade enabled 24fps.
