Cumwhipper Senior Member 4050 Posts 3/04	Posted - Jul 16 2006 : 10:59AM Last night as I was shutting down all my applications (one by one, from the status bar), my CPU crashed. When I rebooted, ALL my FireFox bookmarks were gone. And My toolbar had reverted to standard-sized icons (I had it set to use small icons) I tried a system restore back to the previous day - no help. In desperation, at a very late hour (never a good time to make decisions about technology!), I uninstalled FireFox and downloaded a fresh copy (same version - 1.5.0.4). I went to start configuring the new copy, and when I tried to add bookmarks, CTRL+D wouldn't work. I get the "Add Bookmark" dialog box, but when I click OK, nothing happens. Now I'm stuck using the "Manage Bookmarks" dialog. Very painful. It's almost as if some system-level file or part of the registry got corrupted. One other weirdness - when I open new windows from within FireFox, I'm no longer inheriting all the same attributes from the parent (small icons don't get inherited for example). Anyone have any ideas or suggestions? Thanks! [Link]

The live copy will be located in C:\Documents and Settings\Your Account Name Here\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\Bizarre Profile ID If you find it make a couple of copies in another folder. Then: -open Firefox -open the Bookmarks menu -select Manage Bookmarks from the window that appears: -open the file menu -select Import... From the window that appears: -select From File and click next -browse to location you saved the file -select the bookmarks.html file and click Open If that doesn't work try it again using the bookmarks.bak. Sounds like the hard drive may be failing or corrupted. I suggest you do a full backup of the important stuff. Did you find any words of wisdom on the firefox web site support forums? [Link]

You're right about backup - This hard-drive is getting on in age and may be ready to shit the bed. Any good suggestions for backup? Has anyone tried any of the online backup services? Note some places might be named diff from yours. i'll bput those in ( ). C:\Documents and Settings\(dude)\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\(5gaguvpi.default)\bookmarkbackups you should see some html files. with diff dates. look for one before you had your probleme. then copy it. Load firefox go to Bookmarks--Manage Bookmarks--File--Import then load that copyed html file. [Link]

Granted, I did this after uninstalling Firefox, so I may have inadvertently blown the backup away. Whatever - I didn't have that many Bookmarks anyway - maybe 50 - and any ones I use regularly I can always re-enter (even though having to use the Bookmark Manager is a pain in the ass). Password Manager is still operating normally, which makes me think it's even more likely that some portion of the registry got blown away. [Link]

I've had problems with mine, then received an e-mail from the company (that's why you register your purchase) that the lost a class action suit and to fill out this form. I should be getting some compensation for a crappy drive. [Link]

Click to expand Don't just search: go to (in Microsoft windows) C:\Documents and Settings\<loginname>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles and look below that for the profile directory. The names depend on how you configured things so look in every directory in Profiles. And there may well be more than one Profile directory. It sometimes happens you wind up with a new profile and no obvious evidence of this other than the loss of all settings. Granted, I did this after uninstalling Firefox, so I may have inadvertently blown the backup away. Click to expand No - bookmarks, extensions, themes and other settings are not kept with the things installing or uninstalling FireFox changes. You lost no bookmarks by doing it. Password Manager is still operating normally, which makes me think it's even more likely that some portion of the registry got blown away. Click to expand This is a bad sign. But it does say that the Profile directory is still there. Find that directory (under the "Profiles" directory mentioned above) and look for a subdirectory called "bookmarkbackups". This might contain useful files. Do this soon, before any old files are overwritten. No backup versions of bookmark.* to be found anywhere. Click to expand That's not a good search pattern. Try "bookmark*.html" instead. But keep in mind that Microsoft Windows may not search "hidden" directories. Just because the Explorer search function doesn't find it doesn't mean it's not there. You have to find the Profile directory yourself and look. [Link]
Jacco All-Star Member "liable to deprave and corrupt" 2673 Posts 5/04	Posted - Jul 17 2006 : 11:44AM The bookmark backups are only kept for the last 5 days, so make sure to look in that directory soon, or they will be overwritten by your current bookmark file. Preferred make? I have no clue. I'm still wary of the technology. All I've heard about is LaCie drives. [Link]
