If there isn't any nudity, you might try going to Wal-Mart, Walgreens, etc. and trying to get those readers to get it to work.

If you can view them on your camera, the files clearly exist. Don't panic and lose them!

If you're running XP, your camera should appear under my computer (like a drive does).
So, when you're connected via your cable interface, can your computer see the camera?
If yes, you can navigate your way through the camera's folders until you find the one that holds the picture files.
You could then try copying that folder to your hard drive.
If it won't allow you to copy the folder (because of some error message continuing), see if you can copy individual files from within the folder.

You do NOT need any software to do this! In fact, reject all attempts for additional software and/or picture viewers to launch and "help" you.
The XP OS is capable of simple copying of folders all on its own :)

Once the folder is onto your hard drive, you should be able to open the pictures using any of several programs.
I would suggest using "Windows Picture and Fax Viewer."
Simply right-click on a picture file, then go to "Open With" and choose "Windows Picture and Fax Viewer."

I'm running Windows 2000 Professional on a Dell . The camera is a Nikon CoolPix 4200 and the direct cable is a Nikon USB that came with the camera. Very decent camera. I am using a 256mb SanDisck Sd card and a G.E. USB 2.0 card reader (fairly generic 11 in 1 reader/writer). I also tried using a neighbor's card reader with the same results. Since then, I have also tried it in a computer with a built-in reader and STILL had the same results.

The same thing happens whether I go via direct cable or card reader. The camera or reader is definitely being recognized by the computer - in both cases it appears under "My Computer" and can be accessed. When accessed it then shows the subfolders contained (one being the actual files and the other being administrative, I believe). The problem lies in then accessing that subfolder (entitled Nikon100 ). That is when I get the error message.

I have tried copying the folder and moving the folder with the same error message each time. Neither works and I cannot open the folder either - so I am unable to get to the individual files.

It is the fact that I can still see the pics when in the camera that makes this all so frustrating. I have spoken with four different people who have corrupted their digital cards in the past and they all said that they could NOT see their pics. This gives me hope, but is still maddening.

Have you tried setting yours to "PTP" and using software that understands that protocol?
I don't know what software to use for this on Windows 2000 as I don't use Windows at home, but perhaps something came with the camera.

If the camera can show the pictures, perhaps this way might work.

Try a card recovery program. Technically you never deleted the files but it'll recover corrupted files too... I have a program at home that bailed me out one time... problem is that I'm not home right now to give you the name of it.

I did a search for recovery programs, downloaded one free version just to see how it works (and got the first ten pictures), then while doing another search, I found a free one! It was basic, but did all that I needed! I have now recovered not only all my photos from the weekend but a bunch of other ones I didn't realize were still on the card! TA-DA!

What can I say? You guys rock! Thank you so much for taking the time and helping me out!
