But eventually, cock size began to become a bit more "competitive" after both John Holmes and Ron Jeremy got into the game, and started appearing in more features. Both of those guys kept very busy, but Ron was always the easier of the two to find and book. As I recall, there were not too many big cocks around back in the mid seventies to the early eighties. This went on from the sixties into the early eighties, until video shooting began. This is where all the real pornographers were back in those days, and they didn't give a shit about shooting features. They were the ones who were shooting anything that was considered "extreme" or kinky. The rest of us, the "filmmakers", shot our features with limited explicit coverage and lots of "soft core" stuff.
What was distributed to the theatres was very tame, compared to most of the 16 m/m stuff, back then.

Those bigger budget features that guys like myself became so "reknown" for, actually gave those ticket buyers in the theatres less for their money. But it was all the porn that most could find, because these films were advertised more. Back then, many big city newspapers accepted adult theatre advertising.

Theate exhibitors during these times were not at all anxious to run any hotter, nastier and longer scenes than they already were, as long as business kept up. Every exhibitor feared getting busted for porn. So the sex scenes shot on most of those "old classics" were shot with little regard for the close-ups and better lit angles, because none of us back then were exposed or trained for it.

It wasn't until around 1984, when my own material started to get better and hotter explicit coverage. It started when Art Ben began shooting for me (aka Ron Dorfman, who made the excellent documentary, "Groupies") He was one hell of a nasty pornographer who learned how to shoot porn with the sixteen millimeter guys, and he was a far better filmmaker than he ever got credit for. I got hired to shoot the better paying features instead of guys like Art Ben, because I got all the hype and press back in those days. I'm very fortunate that we ended up shooting together, as a team. We must have shot a couple of dozen film features together. He was the guy who really started to open my eyes to porn.

I think the reason that I got the better paying productions over my peers and competition during that period, was because I wrote nastier scenes for myself to shoot, than my competitors did. While most sex scenes were covered with "moans and groans", over some bad music, I kept a lot of specific sexual dialogue running during the fucking, while Art Ben shot if for us. I needed a better actor more than I needed a bigger dick, or so I believed.

Meanwhile, the cock sizes started getting bigger for feature films, as more guys from the 16 m/m loops started getting booked into more features. But more often than not, they only looked bigger. A lot of those male performers who shot those hotter loops, worked in both straight and gay porn, and these guys routinely kept their pubic hair trimmed, shaved back and hairless, to about an inch above the base of their cocks. Made 'em look bigger.

There you go. Thirty years later and look at 'em today; big, bigger, biggest.
