| Goldstein All-Star Member "You have sacrificed nothing and no one." 3689 Posts 8/10 | Specifically, I'd like to see some options that actually let you sample a website to honestly see if you'd like to join. You would think that porn membership sites would very much like to recruit and encourage new members, and treat them well so that they become long-term members? Instead, what we get are pre-checked boxes, deliberately misleading descriptions of what membership includes, and the ubiquitous "$1 trial memberships," which are next to impossible to cancel and result in the customer being endlessly rolled-over into automatically-renewing monthly memberships at the highest possible rate the website bills at. Seriously, is tricking the customer with the "$1 trial membership" then screwing them over with the $39.95/month automatically-renewing membership, plus a bonus pre-checked box membership they "signed up for" if they weren't being extra observant, that lucrative? I mean, once you've burned the customer in this fashion they are certainly not going to continue doing business with you going forward, right? Here's something I'd like to see as an honest trial membership option: Two-week trial membership for $9.95 . Full access to all areas of the site, with unlimited streaming . Five full downloads -- including the highest resolutions the site offers -- of absolutely any and every scene on the site . A trial is a trial, and will not automatically renew -- period . The option to convert to a full membership during your two-week trial -- monthly one-time, monthly recurring, quarterly and yearly memberships will be available -- and have your trial membership fee credited towards your full membership cost (with the date you began your trial remaining as the date your full membership starts from) . "Streaming Only" and "Full Download" memberships may both be offered -- provided this is fully-disclosed upfront -- and all membership terms for both options clearly disclosed in all details . A "Full Download" membership will mean exactly that -- no additional hidden fees for downloading membership content -- period . No pre-checked boxes of any kind (i.e. each and every membership option must be selected by the customer to be valid) . All memberships will not automatically renew by default (the site may offer this, but the customer must choose it) I'd like to see some discussion about this and additional suggestions made. I will take the time to explain and justify my suggestions -- and why I feel they are fair to all concerned -- with all who honestly engage the issue. [Link] |

It's not in the site's interest to offer more than miniscule portion of their library for a dollar so therefore you know you aren't getting anything for that dollar. 2-A two week trial for 10$ isn't a bad idea but again most sites offer a one month membership for 20$ so your price option is not really all that different except it's half the cost for half the time. You also have to consider that with only a two week trial than you are likely to join more often to get access to all the content. Where it's quite different is that you would be happy with only 5 full downloads when the one month membership includes everything. 3-I like the non-recurring thing but that should be an option when you join and not mandatory because I like the recurring option. I like the fact that I don't have to keep joining the same site and if I don't like what I'm watching than I normally cancel within the first week of joining a site so the recurring option becomes void. 4-In a perfect world there wouldn't be technology that allows people to record streaming only content and this way your streaming only option might be okay for some but as it stands that technology exist so a site can't guarantee that someone paying for streaming only access won't in turn record all the videos offered by the site. Whenever someone discusses the state of porn and what should be done then they more often than not bring up Apples business model as an example of what can be done but the reality is that one of the biggest reasons why Apple has been able to grow into what it is today is that they built a piece of technology that became ultra popular and that gave Apple tremendous power over the artist that used to produce content on a different type of media and those artist chose or were forced to navigate toward Apple. If you were to ask most artist which they prefer. Forcing all their fans to buy an entire album for 15$ or allowing them to pick and choose various song for a 1-2$ than they would pick the first. Don't forget that whether an artist song is popular or not. Cost of production was the same when they made it and therefore those songs that don't sell cost the artist money. Porn doesn't have that piece of technology to rely on so the only way that a company could copy Apple's business model would be if all porn producers agreed to use that companies site like Apple store but where the cost would have to be more than 1-2$. I suspect that the site would have to charge at least 5$ for one video to make everyone happy. For that reason it's never going to happen because you can join a site for 20$ and get hundreds if not thousands of videos. |

Many/most of the major sites don't, but there's more than a few "smaller" sites that do. I also don't necessarily think a trial needs to be "full" to give enough of an idea of what the site offers. I feel like what the OP is asking for isn't really a trial so much as it is a two week membership option to complement the monthly and yearly options (except with a kinda unnecessary download restriction). I don't see why a trial needs to be longer than a week, seeing as most sites out there update at least once a week, so you'd get a good idea of the content already there and how new updates are handled within that time frame. |

| Goldstein All-Star Member "You have sacrificed nothing and no one." 3689 Posts 8/10 | Actually, Flash, I think the "point of the trial" (i.e. the "$1 trials") is to roll you over into the $39.95/month automatically-renewing "screw job" membership. I'd like to try many websites, but I'm not going to (a) use the "$1 trial membership" screw job, or (b) buy a one month subscription for every site I'm interested in. This just isn't "feasible" I spend hundreds and thousands of dollars on porn, and join many sites. And, when I join a site, it's a yearly membership -- and I usually remain a member going forward after that. Believe me, I'm the guy you want to be attracting to your site -- and the de facto industry practices are exactly what are keeping me away. I can also tell you that my credit card company has often held up purchases of adult site memberships until they actually speak to me. They have told me that such and such site has had numerous complaints filed against them, and that they now require verification before approving the transaction. Gee, I wonder why. Do you think it might have anything to do with the standard industry misleading and dishonest business models? |
| SweetJD Member 182 Posts 12/16 | Your average potential consumer isn't the kind of person enthusiastic enough about porn to join a forum like this one or know of websites like TheBestPorn or other review sites. They get a membership, get burned, cancel (with difficulty) and then swear to never again spend money on a porn site. It's now part of the collective opinion that you shouldn't thrust porn companies with your credit card information. Honestly, they shot themselves in the foot and now only a minority of us are still paying. I won't cry when some studios shut down, porn will still exist in some form or other. Porn viewership is huge so there will always be someone who figures out a way to make money from it. Anyway, I guess this doesn't really answer the OP but I felt like ranting a bit so.. yeah. |
