Trying to find an avatar smaller than 5 K is tough. I'd rather change my avatar through a link, like we had to do before. I'm unable to do this in my profile. The "Avatar links to:" does nothing, even if the avatar is smaller than 100 x 100.

How can I load an avatar the old way?

You can't, however I believe Drew's new process will automatically resize your avatar if it is over the size limit. However, as the avatar page states, you might not like the results.

What are you using to create your avatar? I use IrfanView to lower the resolution on mine until they're under the 5Kb limit.

That's what I'm using. Are you talking about decreasing color depth? I tried that but it looks ugly.

When you open a JPEG and select "Save As" in IrfanView there are two windows that come up. The first is the "Save Picture As" window where you name the file and select the directory it should go in. The second is the "JPEG/GIF Save Options" window which has a sliding bar titled "Save quality." By lowering the save quality you reduce the amount of information stored in the file, resulting in a smaller file size.

Also, be sure and uncheck these three options:
Keep original EXIF data
Keep original IPTC data
Keep original JPG-Comment

OK, Thanks Hardware.
I was always leaving those boxes checked.

You can't do it the old way. I've disabled the ability to do it the old way. The "Avatar links to:" is to create a link so that someone can click your avatar and be taken to a new page. The Avatar Links to: is not a means to try to load a new avatar.

The Avatar uploader page opens in a new window when clicking the "Add Avatar" link when viewing your user profile. This page includes instructions. They read:

Use this page to modify the image associated with your forum user profile. This image is commonly referred to as an avatar.

One thing that the instructions don't state is that we also automatically reprocess your avatar image into JPG format. So if you're uploading a GIF, it might look different as a JPG.

Our server also instructs your browser to cache the avatar images locally (on your computer) for 24 hours. If you change your avatar on the server you might still have the old, cached copy on your local system. You'll need to force a full page refresh by pressing Ctrl+F5 to get the new image. We use the caching mechanism to save bandwidth.

Yeah thanks Drew but after doing what Hardware suggested, I really don't have a problem now with getting just about any avatar smaller than 5 Kb to look decent. I always reprocess my avatars to JPG if they aren't already.

Maybe I overloooked it if it is there, but I was wondering how to simply delete an avatar?

Suppose I try one, don't like it, and just want to go back to a blank? How do I do it?

Thanks

willywilly,

If you have an avatar loaded and go back into your profile, there should be a link to 'delete avatar'. That will simply remove the one you have loaded.

Oh man - I was feeling really stupid, until I went and checked that. Mine says no avatar loaded now - and I bet that will change to the 'delete avatar' after I experiment and upload one - right?

Another question, if you don't mind, about this site:
I've told it to email me every time there is a reply to this thread. I did that in my first post in this thread.
If I decide I'd like to turn that off, how do I do it?

The notification emails do instruct me to go into my Profile to shut it off, but that looks like it will shut it off for *all* threads, not just this one.

I'm getting the feeling that once I've put that reply option on a thread, I'm stuck with it - or none at all even from other threads. :)

thanks

willywilly,

The problem with 'notification' has not been resolved yet. The only way is to email Drew, the administrator and ask him to remove it from a particular thread.

His email address is drew@adultdvdtalk.com.

... and yes, only after you have added an avatar will the 'delete' show.

So I take it I assesed it correctly then.
It doesn't look like all that big of a deal - I don't really expect this thread to keep generating emails forever. :)

I'll wait a while and see what happens before asking to have some work done.

About the avatar and the delete function - thanks.

This is not true. Simply log into your profile using the Profile link at the top of every forum page. There is a link at the top of the profile page that reads "Click here to Manage your thread subscriptions" This has been in place since April of last year.

Well shucks - you expect me to have sense enough to be able to actually read that and try it?

Tried it. Up popped a tree with checkboxes and instructions. Looked like it would do exactly what I wanted. Have made my adjustments. Time will tell.

Thank you! :)
