I have often wondered this. I mean, take your average porn movie (i.e. Good Source Of Iron # 3).

Ok, you gotta pay the girls ($3,000 tops), the guys (12 men - about $800 a peace).

So, how much is left in profit??

I would say in AGSOI or other heavy swallow vids, a lot of the guys are free. At least the ones just being used for their cum :-)
But this is something i would like to know too - anyone?

I would think being allowed to shoot your cum all over a hot girl would be thanks enough. I agree

I could swear that it's very common for female talent to total at least $5000 for most anal films.

Girls don't make anywhere near $5,000 for anal films. $1000-1200 is standard.

I thought he meant for all of the girls total, mutt, but maybe not.

I would assume JJ paid at least $5,000 for the female talent(total) in Perfect specimens 2.

Lets see, on the low end. 7 girls at $1,000 a piece . . . . $7,000, not including the bonus bj scene.

i was responding to GonzoAnalFan's comment 'I could swear that it's very common for female talent to total at least $5000 for most anal films.'

you might be right that he was talking about hiring 3 or 4 girls to do anal for a typical gonzo video - i thought he was saying each girl gets $5,000 for doing anal.

Yeah, I know you meant gonzoanalfan's comment. I was referring to that one too. I can't tell what he meant, but you are very correct. If he meant for one girl, then that is too high a number.

I reread it and think you may have interpreted him correctly. It just threw me because it seems so high of a price.

Hmmm. Lessee, here. There's how many thousands of DVD's produced each year by how many companies?

Considering there is no real industry group that collects and collates such data, I don't think you'll get an industry average. That being the case, I also doubt any individual company wants to let it's competitors know how its doing in the marketplace.

One grand per female for an anal scene? You know, if I was a millionaire I would definitely foot the entire bill for a porn video of my liking. And as I am a morally bankrupt human being, I'd pay each girl whatever it takes to perform just to my liking. I'm thinking of Teagan, gobs and gobs of Vaseline, and the most furious double anal our eyes have ever seen! Oh, to dream...

Well if I may pipe in. From what we are currently shooting an average "feature" costs us close to $10,000.00 in talent. Both male and female if we use outside contractors. Tack on another $2k - $4k for other staff.

The average GROSS numbers we've seen is that a video in it's first run will often top out between $60k - $90k. Of course there are other financial considerations such as marketing, shipping, design, post-production costs to factor into that which suck up the gross profits. So of course you hope for a second run and third run where you start really seeing the profits.

Now of course my figures could be flawed compared to bigger company representatives who post here. But those are the figures WE have for being a small amateur company.

Of course talent costs differ depending on who you're working with as well. Like I somehow don't think we could get Krystal Steel to do an Interracial Anal scene for less than *Throws out a number* $20,000.00. But I am sure you get the idea.

I hope that helps a little and that I haven't totally fouled up the figures. As they are just off the top of my head.

you did not mention any tax deductions.
How much would that be in total? 20% ?

Im not a sir. :) Well we figure on the gross generated revenue 33.3% to uncle sam as a general rule of thumb. But then there are the deductions that we get to take at the end of the year. So our total tax burden usually ends up at around 7% if that. Plus we get to deduct movies that lost money as well.

But honestly it's hard to govern the tax rate on a per movie basis since there are other expenses to running the business as a whole. Staffing, (we now have a staff of 20 over two states), utilities, office stuff, a whole lot of travel costs. The cost of materials (Tapes, DVD blanks, etc.) There is a lot to figure into the entire deal that many people don't actually think about.

I was just attempting to address the question of cost for just one movie minus all the sattelite costs. I hope that helps.

I think I got it guys:

If a movie we assume "nets" 50K...and it's a monthy feature take 50K x 10 that's 500K a year from one video series if I'm reading the above right (give or take).

Not bad.

I'm assuming this for one series. So, if your Toxxic, and you got 4-5 going....man, the cash can really ad up.

God...why didn't I get into the industry 10 years ago.

Yup you've pretty much got a good grasp on how it works. Not much money to be made in one title but now have 20 + and as you said the cash starts adding up.

I think this was a great and valid question though and I am surprised that no one from the larger companies answered it. :( Maybe they just didnt see. Because I for one would be very interested in seeing what the others have to say.

Oh did I also mention in my cost breakdowns about distribution? That could run a pretty penny as well.

Oh and by the way. USUALLY all the male talent is compensated financially for their appearance in the scene. This is sort of more of a legal thing than anything else having to do with releases and liability. Some form of tangible consideration has to be made. Even if it is only $1.00. Like ANY of you would want to fuck Jenna if you only got paid $1.00 to do it. LMAO.

The term 'total' was intended for the sole purpose of making it abundantly clear that I was speaking of an aggregate amount paid out for ALL female talent for a film when anal is performed by each of them...in most cases 5 scenes.

Who is Tricia? And yes it is the home of Boeing. They have a nice plant and offer tours. And along with REM, HEART, NERDVana, Pearljan, Soundgarden, I think Hendrix was from here. And also home to the late Brandon Lee.

And as far as the info, I just hope that it is somewhat accurate. As I said I just pulled it off the top of my head.

Oh and it's MS. No ring on this finger anymore.

This is an AWESOME question that can elicit a TON of different answers. I commend anyone that could even think of an answer. (my guess is at bottom). I really like BKP - Janay's thoughts on the question. There are many ways to sell, or not to sell, adult movies because something like 15000+ are released every year.

Within the adult market, there are many different genres; straight, gay, bondage, etc, and each genre can be broken down to many different niches; feature, gonzo, pro am, amateur, fetish etc.

The truth is that most adult titles sell under 1,000 dvds total. TOTAL. So figure 1,000 x $10 = 10,000. And that's if the studio can get $10 for their product. It will more than likely be in the $5-$8 range after a wholesaler, distributor, etc. This would be the GROSS. I know this may sound low to some of you, but it's the truth. These numbers are not a reflection of the mainstream adult studios.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that amount isn't worth it! Especially factoring in editing, replication, printing, marketing, sales, business expenses, taxes and PAYING everyone on the production end! So to hopefully make up for this shortfall, many companies start to "churn" out more titles, saturating their own market in the hopes that sales will "magically" cross over into a profitable area and everyone will start buying their product. Better marketing of better product is the only answer.

Unfortuantely, this is why half the companies that were at last year's AEE are not going to be there this year. And why half of this year's won't be there next year.

The cool thing is that the customer (fan) really gets the best of it! I can say the change in adult productions in the past 10 years has been fantastic, with the last 3 years really bringing out the best in directors, talent and studios.

That's why so many companies are turning to marketing their content online to make a profit.

A movie (and movie content) can be marketed many different ways: Studio mail order, retail sales, VOD - DRM, foreign, content and for some companies, compilation titles. Marketing and branding of certain companies is crucial to keeping up sales and creating a great company image. There are also a few of the studios that are owned by major distributors and adult retail chains.

I would venture to say "A Good Source of Iron" isn't an average porn movie. The guys (and girls) at PXP really have their stuff together in regards to sales, marketing and distribution. Having a company that EVERYONE knows is crucial; Evil Angel, Vivid, Wicked, Redlight, Anabolic, Jill Kelly, Elegant Angel, West Coast, PXP, DVSX, Hustler, Private, etc (please don't get mad at me if I didn't mention your company). It is an important part of surviving in the adult marketplace.

So, in short, a good (or bad) movie that everyone knows about and talks about will sell intitally. The good ones will continue to sell. So if you see a movie you really like from a smaller company, buy it. You never know when, or if, you will see it again.

I'm not even sure if I answered the question, but thanks for reading my rambling.

So my guess is $500 (sm. amateur prod.) to $10,000,000 (1 Night in Paris) over the course of 6 months.

I think your numbers are rather low. But then also a lot depends on the size of the company and the amount of work those people do in house.

But I am glad that I made a good point or two. :)

Guadalcanal were from Marrietta, just north of Atlanta. A town famous in history for having lynched a Jew.(the Leo Frank case) They later moved as a band to Athens.

REM is from Athens, but modern REM is really based in Seattle. That's why he included them in the Seattle reference. Pete Buck moved to Seattle long ago, and all the extra musicians and key crew people are based in Seattle now.

I'm guessing that you're not the only one. In the past, when similar questions have been asked, the typical industry reply is "none of your business" (although stated more diplomatically than that).

I just took a look at your site (which, unfortunately, is not Mozilla friendly). There needs to be a move featuring nobody but Black Kat Production and production support staff (well, I guess you can swap out some of the guys, but the rest of the staff needs to be in front of the camera. I'm surprised that any work gets done at that place.

Not Mozilla friendly? GRRRRR! Work with me on this. What exactly were some of the problems you experienced? We are still working some of the bugs out of the system.

But as you were saying I don't know what the big deal is about reporting on the costs of making a movie. I mean hey maybe if people knew the cost to loss for one movie they'd appreciate them more. :)

As far as us girls go.... Actually we all come from the more in your face portion of the adult industry. The world of lap dances :) Work gets done no problem. Of the three guys that we work closest with we are exes of one of them the other is gay, and the third has a wonderful wife and a baby on the way.

But thank you so much. I will pass the compliment on to the rest of the girls.

You know, I should have said "not Mozilla Firefox friendly". I'm using Firefox 1.0. The data entry fields are not accessible using this browser. So I couldn't register or log in using it. There was no problem doing either of these things using Explorer. I have no idea if there are similar problems once you get to the message board or anywhere else, because I couldn't get that far into the site while using Firefox.

If you can get the index.php screen to allow data entry into the username and password fields, let me know and I'll try it out again.

By the time that you made the comment that I quoted, the discussion had turned into revenues as much as they were about costs. It was more the revenues that I was referring to. But most of the industry people are pretty quiet about their costs too.
Depending on which world of lap dances you come from, that's either one of my most favorite or least favorite areas of the industry.
You're very welcome.

Though "One Night in Paris" will probably make much, much more, that sort of title is the exception. Ghost Pro didn't point out t"business expenses" for companies include everything from rent to salaries for warehouse box packers to secretaries to PR people to salespeople to cover designers to company owners. Add into tthe production/post-production cost paying the director and editor (besides the crew), and suddenly it's easy to see why a lot of companies actually DON'T make very much money. And when this is the case, you see even LESS money go into every production at most of the houses, so I don't know how well the fan is being served ... except a certain breed of raincoater who doesn't care about anything but the extremity of the sexual act in question ... As was pointed out here, what really makes a title bring back a reasonable profit are reorders (as well as ancillary rights, such as foreign and cable), but with the glut of lookalike product on the marketplace, reorders are down for everybody. And I mean EVERYBODY, relatively speaking.

It's true: REM is more Seattle than Athens. All that is left is Athens is the main office and Bertis Downs.

Stipe spends most of his time in New York and LA but still has a house or two in Athens.

Mills was in Atlanta for a long time, but probably goes all over the place.

Buck lives in Seattle, as do auxilary REMmers, Scott McCaughey and Ken Stringfellow and I'm not sure about the drummer they have now. Buck's wife owns the Crocodile rock club.

I;m pretty sure Microwave is still in Athens, and I know (producer/local studio dude) John Keane is, but I haven't been on the inside tip in awhile.
