I realize that HD/BlueRay is a ways away, but personally I feel the time has arrived to start shipping an HDTV ratio. Some have allready started dabaling with it, but how long till it is the norm you think?
As soon as they start using HD camera's and when the majority of us are using HDTV's which will still be awhile. Right now, HDTV's are a novelty for the wealthy but in few years they will be common house and every TV in a WalMart will be high def when the prices drop due to mass consumption.
It may not yet be the norm, but more and more porn productions have been shooting in HD in the last couple of years, and then reducing it to DVD quality for release. But the masters are in HD so they can re-release the old movie in HD when the technology and consumer demand warrant it. I disagree with you about prices dropping because of mass consumption. More of the masses will be able to consume HDTV sets when the prices drop. Prices will drop as manufacturers are able through new technologies and techniques in their factories to reduce their per unit cost. Part of that will come from economy of scale, which will tie in with mass consumption, but that's kind of a chicken or the egg question. It will take cooperation between manufacturing engineers and market research. You know, the engineers in the manufacturing plant will have to figure that in order to make HDTV sets for X dollars each, then they will have to make a minimum of Y units. Then market research people have to determine if they will be able to sell Y units at that price. If they can't, then the engineers will have to refigure the per unit costs for making fewer units.
Gentleman is right. A lot of the major companies started shooting HD last year. They just don't release them as such yet with a few exceptions.
I think all to Digital Playground's releases are 16x9 and I have noticed a lot of Wicked's are as well now. Don't know if they all are.
To be honest I am not sure if the Gonzo companies should go that route. A lot of the appeal for that type of film (at least for me any way) is the "you are there" feel to the filming style. Not sure if that would translate well into the larger screen format.
That's interesting cause the HDTV pushers state that 16:9 is a more natural field of vision due to most people's eyes being structured in a rectangle not a square so you might actually find it "more you're there". I have a 16:10 19" screen and I have noticed clips can almost fit it, and it does look great because I'm not looking into a square anymore. In other words, pick a window to look out of, a square, circle or rectangle....

No matter what it says on the box, no standard DVD can display HD. We will see HD porn when it is released on HD-DVD or Blu-Ray. Hopefully we will see this sooner than later.
That's not completely true. A movie can be recorded on a standard DVD in High Definition using WMV9. There are currently no stand alone DVD players that will decode WMV9 discs, but people using Home Theater PC's should be able to play these movies perfectly on their HDTV's connected to the HTPC.
I know that Digital Playground has included a WMV9 version of a few of their titles, including Pirates, with the standard DVD and Evil Angel has done the same with "Vault Of Whores".
In addition to Wicked and Digital Playground, all of Vouyer Vision releases are now 16x9. Most Ninn Worx stuff is too, as well as a lot of Private stuff. In fact, there are almost 450 16x9 titles out there, according to this list on Adult DVD Empire:
