I intstalled the Flip4Mac program that lets you watch Windows Media files on your Mac. I closed and opened Safari. It's still not letting me watch the movies and keeps telling me the same shit about needing the same plug-in, even though i just installed it. how do i fix this? relearning everything on an OS sucks. thanks.
Not sure what to tell you Chode...I'm watching the recent Sex and Submission scene with Ginger Lynn (WMV) right now. I use Flip4Mac plugin for Quicktime also. I will say I use Firefox rather than Safari, not that it should make a difference there. And yeah, the learning curve going from Win to OSX is a there....personally, the ONE thing I still hate about the Mac is the damn Finder app. I really, REALLY miss Windows Explorer. But I bought a copy of Pathfinder and it's almost as efficient. Finder blows chunks IMHO. I'm sure you likely did this, but just remember that most programs for the Mac come as a DMG package. You download the package, typically "mount" that package (like a disk image)and then launch any installer apps from that image. For Flip4Mac, you should have done this: 1. Double click the disk image file (Flip4Mac WMV.dmg) to mount the disk image. 2. Locate and launch Flip4Mac WMV.mpkg, the installer file. 3. Relaunch your Web browser and QuickTime applications. That last step is important. After installing it, shut down Safari, Quicktime and even Preview if you have it open...all of those use various Quicktime components. Then when you relaunch Safari, it should work.
Oh, one more little quirk of Flip4Mac. Some WMV files, once you double-click them, will take a few secs (sometimes as much as 20 seconds) to actually open in Quicktime. I've not yet figured out what the deal is with that. They play fine, just take a bit to pop up a Quicktime viewer to watch them. I think it has something to do with HD-formatted WMV files....seems to not be any delays with smaller ones.
FINALLY after dl'ing and installing it twice last night and once just now, i finally got the goddamn thing working. thanks for the help LNL. I was getting ready to chunk the comp across the room or sell it or something cuz it was majorly pissing me off. thanks for the suggestion, too, Jacco. i haven't really messed much with Finder, but i'll keep that Pathfinder app in mind in case i have any probs. now my new project is to put a MiniDV tape from a Canon camcorder onto iMovieHD. I tried hooking it up with a USB cable but the program isn't recognizing that it's being played, so i can't capture it. i looked EVERYWHERE today for a DV--->Firewire cable but didn't wanna spend $30 on the wrong thing, so i'm gonna do some research online or something and probably get one there. and i forgot to get a goddamn extension cord so i can plug up my laptop and stay on it indefinetly since the battery lasts only about 3-4 hours. i completely forgot about that today. anyways though, like always, i really appreciate all your help. thanks!!
Firewire cables aren't cheap. Just remember that the Mac needs a full-sized 1394/Firewire port, but your miniDV camcorder likely has a mini-Firewire (sometimes called iLink) port. The best thing to do is take your camcorder with you when you go to the store to get the cable to ensure you get the right end to match there. The other end, the one that goes into your Mac, will just be a standard plug. USB won't work for xferring video from your miniDV camcorder, but you _may_ be able to use it to xfer over pictures stored on a memory card on the camcorder...again, depends on the make. What brand is your camcorder? If you give me the model number, I'll point you exactly to the right cable.
Still? I remember complaining about the cost of my Firewire cable to high heaven but that was at least 5 years ago. If they're still charging an arm and a leg for a cable by now, they deserve to be stripped, shackled and beaten with them.
I haven't bought firewire from them. But I have bought all of my HDMI & HDMI/DVI cables, as well as some analog components for my home theater equipment from them. They have a very good reputation with among the members of the AVScience forum.
i borrowed it from a friend. it's a Canon Elura 100 Digital Video Camcorder. I don't see an iLink connection. The only ports i see are a USB port and a DV port. The only thing i could find out is that i need a 4-6 Firewire cable for my Macbook. That's what it said in the Help Section in iMovieHD. Beyond that, I'm clueless. Thanks for the help. And $4 cables are better than $40 cables from RadioShack. haha. I don't need something badass because i'm just transfering an old MiniDV tape to my laptop so i can mess around with editing. Chances are, I'll never use the camera again since it's not mine. who knows.
