| 2Big Member 200 Posts 4/03 | Drawing on Thomas Kuhn's The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, we can say that the porn industry went through a series of Copernican Revolution over the past 30 years or so. For example, the shift from porn theaters to video tapes. Or, the emergence of Gonzo, people like Ed Powers, Max Hardcore, etc. These revolutions usually happen when the old stuff is played out and stagnant. I think we are at such a point now. The current porn output is boring as hell: same old same old. What will be next big thing in porn? 2Big [Link] |
| lukemason Member 697 Posts 8/04 | and Gore in Porn more Like a Snuff Film If your to go to the next extreme then there you go look no feather then a girl of all about 18 getting her body torn apart I mean if you look to the current trend of things that is the next logical step in porn's evolution and this is a sickening truth ! |
| -Kelly- Senior Member 2517 Posts 5/03 | Theater to video. Video to internet. But the internet has been going on for a while. I agree that the biz could use a revitalization. I don't know what it will be though. Sadly, the intensity level of the sex just keeps getting pushed up and they keep trying more and more extreme sensationalistic gimmicks. As such, I shudder to think of the truth that might rest in the words of lukemason. Kelly |

| -Kelly- Senior Member 2517 Posts 5/03 | Think about it. Government intervention. If the government does finally step in and mandate condoms as we are slowing building up to I think that would be a huge direction shifter for the industry. I'm not saying it's a good thing or bad. I'm just thinking that we've pushed everything to the limits. I don't foresee any technological or filming advance to revitalize things. It's going to take something big and govt. intervention would be that. |
| p_ramezap Senior Member 1549 Posts 5/03 | If directors/producers spent some more time on creating scripts things would improve, i don't think there is a need to push the sex acts further to the extreme, maybe they should take a step back and think about how they complete a project and add some tastefull creativity to it. I don't want to see Vivid type of horseshit, I still want my hardcore stuff but I'm sick of lack of creativity. Tech-wise, maybe the next big thing would be 3D porn on your TV, wouldn't be cool if you could feel somewhat close to the action? hell yeah. |

| sachunglo Member SPERMAN OAKS 48 Posts 1/04 | you would never see an anal scene in the golden days, but these days it seems like every other movie involves penetration of the poop shoot. Also there would only be certain companies that would deal with ethnic and interracial series, but now it seems like every company has an interracial/ethnic line I think M Wood said it best "the industry reached its peak last year"..."with the decline of VHS sales and so many movies on the market you are doing good if you push out 2000 copies" It's hard to say because if you think about a movie it seems like it has already been done or some "ego sensentive" directors think they invented everything so they hate on you. Some say John Stag (evil angel cult leader/porn revolutionist) invented gonzo, so technically everyone is copying him, but at the same time they are putting their own styles and twists on it (basically not inventing the wheel, but making the wheel spin their own way). He is not really hating though, instead he chose to put other directors on that put their own twist on things (but getting his rightful cut of course). I think it's impossible to watch every adult film ever made, so as a consumer I would try to find what turned me on the most and stick with it until I found something else that I would like to see, but I agree that the same lead ups, situations, interviews, angles, and content can get so repetitive that it might burn out consumers (because why would someone want to buy a movie that has pretty much the same exact scene as the movie that they purchased months ago?). The key is finding new girls and not doing the same exact scene as another director with the same girl. *Please continue the hardcore condomless clap fucking and the sensual sloppy blowjobs! thanks |
| jimmyd simplyjimmyd.com 58 Posts 2/03 | the industry is splitting in two...if it hasn't already done so. the majority of companies will continue to produce all-sex/gonzo content. in order to compete, they will have to find the hottest girls willing to participate in freakier and more circus-like content. production values in most of this shit will decline--if it can decline any further. this will represent the bottom of the market with more and more producers competing with more and more other producers for the same market share. many of these producers will flourish, but at the same time just as many will fall on their faces. they will continue spending less and less on their productions and will invent newer and newer ways to exploit the same content. for instance, two movies with five scenes each equals ten blowjobs which will be released as a new BJ title. this is what's going on already. it's like the pork industry who has found so many ways to make revenue off of every fucking ounce of every fucking pig. the other half (and I don't say "half" to mean 50% of the companies, but "half" in terms of the rest of them), will exploit the feature, feature-like, and soft-core markets. these markets require better production values, greater production costs, and more expertise in making them. currently, cable outlets and foreign cable buyers are becoming more and more selective in what they're willing to purchase. you've probably heard about charge-backs killing a lot of the internet guys? well, that's happening in the pay-per-view and "soft" markets as well. it's becoming harder and harder to sell an all-sex/gonzo tape to cable simply because it has a "soft" version. they want more for their money-- better camera work, lighting, sound, stories, etc. since so many directors and producers in the all-sex/gonzo markets don't have the skills to make product that meets the ever-more demanding criteria of cable and pay-per-view buyers, they will be unable and/or unwilling to risk their declining budgets on this sort of fare. i look for many more opportunities in the soft markets... many of them growing even softer as evidenced by late-night on Showtime and DirecTV and elsewhere. In these productions no one's actually fucking, much less fucking in the ass and that sort of thing. this will lure some truly hot talent who will be willing to get naked and press skin, even though they won't actually fuck. that's my take on current trends... but what do i know? P.S. what i've talked about isn't exactly revitalization, it's simply change. |
| Zartyr Member 700 Posts 7/04 | A split - if it has not happened, yet - of the industry into "Vignettes, art core and actual features", which are feasible to get air-time on Pay-TV, and instructional videos for the aspiring proctologist, gynecologist, immunologist and the physicist specialised in the field of "characterics of viscous fluids". Although I think the "vignettes, art core, feature"-field will also have the anal, DP and stuff. Watch all the Italian features from the mid and even early ninetiees for instance. |
| Endless Loop Senior Member Tomatometer 1129 Posts 8/04 | Only recently has the Industry evolved, seemingly blindly, to the topic filming of internal shots, finally addressing the long held interests of many, who patiently have waited eons for this smut of choice to arrive. Infact having viewed some recent releases, I for one, am in no hurry to evoke much change of anything just yet. I do agree, that these, along with other recent extreme endeavors, have marked the last of the remaining unexplored territories, however it need not suggest the industry should reach to the macabre, simply to maintain its amperage of shock value. I presume it once again, would naturally follow the interests of the mainstream, and fortunately, violence is not in that direction. |

| RexLuthor Member LA 25 Posts 6/04 | I think the power of what can be done on a DVD has not even been close to realized. So you end up with something like this, Teagan and Michael Stefano: 1) oral-male POV, 2) straight sex-cowgirl floor angle, 3) straight sex-doggie style POV, 4) anal- doggie penetration angle, 5) facial POV. You hit play and the scene unfolds as you arranged it. There would be a million possible combinations. That kind of thing is possible with DVDs. |
| Guy Capo DVSX 100 Posts 7/03 | In my very limited experience in this field, but using my vast experience in seeing through the bullshit in life, I think the DISTRIBUORS could change the face of the industry more efficiently than anyone, and here's how: Distributor integrity...The distributors make a concious decision to stop buying crap, no matter how well disguised it's recycled condition is, nor how cheaply it's being offered. Poor production values, make-me-sick carnival acts and freakshows, mindless cookie-cutter methods, and amateur hour productions are no longer tolerated...They simply won't be bought by a new breed of distributors who have a true desire to raise the quality of the marketplace. The companies with the most integrity survive, and the weak ones die off...reducing "Porn Valley" to "Nudieville" in about a 90 day time period. The companies with the best productions, more than happy to produce more, sell more, and expand their marketplace, will fill any and all gaps on the store shelves with a better quality version of what was available before...Hence, the marketplace never suffers a drought...God knows, it's supersturated itself to the point where NO REPLACEMENTS are even needed at all. Will the prices go up? Maybe...This is where my lack of experience works against me. Perhaps the companies that survive the natural attrition will be able to keep distributor costs the same, while making it up in new volume. Maybe the cost to the consumer will still have to go up by $5, but I think this thread proves that a mild increase in retail price would be worth the improvements seen in the end-product. Ultimately, "Nudieville" hits a growth spurt, another GOLDEN AGE, if you will, and becomes a haven for budding artists who bring more to the table than the current motley crew can keep up with. These are visionary people who understand that competing in the new marketplace means being more professional, not more amateur. Amateur is so 90's...When will porn outgrow it? I know "gonzo" porn is the original "reality TV"...this industry started a billion dollar approach to entertainment a full decade before mainstream caught on...Isn't it time we move on now ouselves? Final word...The distributors hold all the power. Until they understand that you can make more money selling less product with greater value, we will all continue to suffer through this horrible cycle we are in. Problem is, most distributors care not for the product, consumers, or integrity of the business at all, and simply want the lowest cost per unit you can give them. In their eyes, the consumer will pick from whatever is on the shelves, regardless of quality, integrity, or value. But value is something that is created by the producers, and justified by the increase in quality. Value isn't about price...it's about quality. Edited by - guy capo on 8/30/2004 6:14:45 PM |
| Lee O Forearm Trainer mmmmmmm........ after-birth 1193 Posts 8/03 | Kelly mentioned the technological advances which have driven and altered the course of pornography . Is there any reason to believe this process has stopped ? The internet as a mass consumer force is still relatively new : who knows what surprising effects it might have in store . My own feeling ( and hope ) is that the next big change to effect porn will come from a new and growing female audience . With the anonymity granted by the WWW and the more permissive times we're lucky to live in there seems a strong possibility that women will ( and possibly already are ) starting to watch pornography in greater numbers . Just what sort of numbers is an interesting question . Also , to what extent would porn need to change to accomodate more female viewers ? And how willing or ready are the producers to adapt to this possible change ? Can anyone explain just what exactly the rules are that governing what cable companies can and can't show ? And what likelihood is there that they might be relaxed over time ?In Britain there used to be a total ban on televised sex , but over the years things have changed . Now some of the Sex channels are pushing the envelope like naughty children seeing how much they can get away with . Is there a similar situation in the US or continental Europe ( I think France is possibly becoming more prudish , correct me if I'm wrong ) ? The same rules of change that could apply to the internet also could apply to cable/satellite pornography . Anonymity . Ease of access . Loss of stigma . These could be a powerful force for change . Untill now if you've wanted to watch porn you've really had to want it . That sort of limits the number and type of person who'll be watching . But things could be changing . As a limited form of proof of this change I offer exhibit Z : Me . I've never visited a porn shop , and don't have any intention of doing so in the future . My only connection with porn has come through the internet and over the TV . If that means of access was cut off I'd probably not bother finding a new way to buy sex flicks . This can't be a unique experiece . |
| Chico Wang Member 775 Posts 1/04 | Distributors in general are not concerned about raising the quality of their product. Rather they are concerned about raising the quantity of their profits. Completely understandable in a market where it's all a number's game. Without those $2 - $3 cheap tapes marked up 500%, a bookstore cannot survive. After all, are they only going to sell $49.95 new DVDs from premium companies? Distributors buy based on demand not perceived quality. Chico |

I'd say it's up to the consumer to encourage things to improve, by supporting the folks who make quality stuff. Though even I, who used to spend $100-$150 a month or porn DVDs have cut back to maybe two or three purchases a month. Leaning more on trades and loans and the XRent membership (which nets me about 6 titles in a month for $25, more if I can return 'em faster). Unfortunately, if I'm ONLY gonna buy 3 titles a month, 2 of those are probably gonna be from Joey Silvera or Jules Jordan, 'cos they make the most "must-have" porn I know of, which doesn't leave much for the other stuff I like -- like Mike John or Jake Malone stuff from RLD, Chico's wacky escapades du jour, Capo, Mason, William H, and so on ... and now there's Jonni Darkko, too, on my radar. So a lot ends up in the rental queue. But of people shooting porn right now, these are people I really like (there are others, obviously) because they're all trying to leave some personal identity on their movies -- whether it's clown-fucking, crane-shots, camel-clutches, or cumshot cavalcades causing imperiled teenage spermaholics to shout desperately towards the horizon for Coast Guard rescue. it's gotta be something, something good and something original or if not original at least weird or inspired. The Cum-fy Heuristic Intelligence Corporation (CHIC) is proud to announce the next big thing in interactive entertainment: the Cum-On-Command Knowledge System (or COCKS, for short). At the heart of COCKS is our proprietary Orgasmo-Sensor technology, which allows our CHIC DVD Systems (CHICS, for short) to know when your orgasm is about to be achieved. That's right, men! Our CHICS with COCKS will be able to determine when you are about to orgasm and automatically jump to the cum-shot part of the scene you are watching, so that you and your splooge will be one with the performers on screen. | Nevaquit Justin Slayer Productions When it is dark enough, you can see the stars 456 Posts 2/03 | Of course (IMHO) it has begun Already! Fortunately, we (I include myself too) as consumers have many, MANY more outlets than ever before...the internet is a great example of this revitalization where you can access porn of almost any niche via new porn sites popping up everyday. The internet gave an Alabama "born and Bred" cat like me a chance to see things I never dreamed of in terms of hot babes and sexual niches. Not only that...with a camera, a computer with a modem, a visa debit card, and a willing chick - I was able to start a simple site. WOW...I knew right then..that the world of Porn would forever change because it meant that the average "Joe Snuffy" (like me) could produce porn the way - he/she wanted..in the privacy of his home! Then came the tools such as Cams, DSL/cable modems, better computers and other items that helped access content faster and with better quality via the internet. Next...messageboards, blogs, newsgroups and e-mail helped like minded individuals communicate better among themselves and with porn producers..so now we (porn producers) can respond to the ACTUAL demand and consumers can actually get the type of porn they WANT....not what distributors would ONLY push or make available to our local stores. This aspect ALONE has changed the face of Porn Tremendously!!! So now when a person gets bored with what he or she is currently seeing...they can easily access the web and explore endless sexual possibilities. No longer are we, as customers, bound to what our local 'brick and mortar' has to offer us...as a matter of fact..either the 'brick and mortar' adapts to the ACTUAL demand or find themselves losing major profits at the cash register. In conclusion, I think that the revitalization begins with US (yes, me too) - the consumer! And YES,in my humble opinion..it already has begun...Each individual has to seek out and explore NEW and Different types of porn thats readily already available. If you only pick up the same type of porn (all the time) from the same type of people...then how can you expect - Different/ more creative than what you already been getting?? So explore, research, and look at different product thats already here...and maybe you too will see that the revitalization has already begun! Btw...great thread! |
| rob2 Member 824 Posts 2/04 | I really don't like to see the girls go into decline, to start to have the vacant eye far away stare look that you are now seeing in a Taylor Rain and even Arianna. That really bums me out, and then I feel bad for has happened to them. It doesn't seem necessary to me. I think women are the key for the revitalization we are all seeking. Or are we going to devolve into punching now that slapping has become boring? |

| Chico Wang Member 775 Posts 1/04 | The best we all can hope for is that the individual directors can make the movies they want to see. I see alot of porn movies. Most drive me up the wall because I want to see something different. After all, how easy is it to shoot this scenario ... introduce girl, strip tease, blow knob, fuck pussy, fuck ass (maybe), blow load on girl's face, (repeat four more times) In nearly every scene I see (and I only watch gonzo), the scene starts either with the girl walking up stairs, and/or standing with her ass in a highly gluteus exaggerated position, and/or some stupid interview consisting of (your name, your age, what are you here for), and/or some stupid played out set up we've seen a million times and/or a girl introduces herself while stripping talking about how horny she is. I won't name names but sometimes I get bored by the same thing over and over again. I did a test with a handful of DVDs sometime ago. We tried to figure out who the director of the video was. And we couldn't do it. If you cannot tell stylistically or personality-wise who directed the video, the video better have some super hot girls who are pushing the boundaries of their sexuality otherwise you're gonna have some serious problems. The consumer is going to consider it generic and that's the worst situation for yourself (the director) and your company. After all it's all about sex. And sex ain't going to change. I watch so much cookie cutter stuff (and I'm just as guilty as the next director), that I get jaded too. I'm not trying to bust nuts but this is why I consider directors like Mike John, Joey Silvera, Jules Jordan, Jonni Darkko to be directors I love to watch. After all, though it doesn't work everytime, their works are inspired and confident. As a director myself, I only truly respect the work of those I can't duplicate. I only truly respect the work of my peers who can do what I can't do whether it be the visuals, the vibe, or the mood. I could do without the other 90% which all looks the same. It strikes me as funny when I get a DVD from a director who hawks it as an unbelievable piece of never-before-done porno when, upon watching it, I think of it as pure garbage. Cause if it isn't about the directing, then you better have unbelievable girls nobody else has. Otherwise, who cares? Before I knew anything about the industry, the only movies I'd buy and jack off to were Leisure Time, Overtime, and Vivid comps. Why? Cause I got 4 hours of fucking to flog the dolphin with for $10. I was too poor/cheap to buy anything else (I never rented). And it worked. Shit, if I had more money, I simply would've bought more comps. Most people out there could care less about the technical merits of the video. They just want something to jerk off to. Most of the people there aren't porn fanatics. | DIAMOND DOG Deactivated User "Puff Daddy is crap." - Keith Richards 320 Posts 7/04 | Let's face it, he's right though. Porn is porn. It's only going to REALLY stand out, especially in the gonzo market, if the director is versed in shooting something OTHER than porn, IMHO. Chico mentioned some great directors, but I think he's being overly kind when saying he couldn't duplicate their work. Maybe not the chemistry, but anyone can duplicate visuals in gonzo if they wanted to put forth the effort. Not that one should want to copy someone else's style though. I don't like Couples Porn that much, but I often wonder what a gonzo flick would look like if it was directed by Andrew Blake. Whether you enjoy his movies or not, I think most would agree that he can VISUALLY show a movie. In fact he's so good visually, that if he didn't have the "porn stigma", he could easily do mainstream films. Now I say this from a visual standpoint. I don't know if he could TELL a mainstream story. But just imagine him shooting 5 super-hardcore scenes with his eye. Could be very interesting. If someone managed to successfully do that, then I would consider porn revitalized... Or at least on the way. But I know gonzo doesn't have the budget for that so fuck it. |

But I agree that DVD hasn't been fully utilised in porn - or in mainstream . Directors commentory , BTS , making of . It's like a list for the unimaginative to follow , when my own interest often lies at more fo a tangent to the main feature . BTW changing the course of a porn feature sound fun and puts me in mind of some strange books I read growing up . If you want Jack to go jousting go to Page 205 But if you want Jack to fuck the twin princesses again turn to page 87 |

Unless you're using some kind of CGI real-time rendered models with motion capture, I don't think this is possible to achieve with conventional cinematography regardless of how much gigs DVD can store. |
| jimmyd simplyjimmyd.com 58 Posts 2/03 | A few examples: DV vs. analog cameras (broadcast quality video from a miniDV camera that cost a fraction of the purchase price of an analog camera yielding similar quality and requiring the operating skills of a monkey) DVD (everything for less--replicating, artwork, warehousing, storage, shipping) Non-Linear Editing systems (quick and easy editing on systems that now cost a fraction of what comparable linear systems and earlier NLE systems cost with minimal learning curve) Hi-Def (soon to be a requirement of pay-per-view and cable broadcasters) |

As someone said, the sex is the sex. Trying to change the sex is what lead to the circus acts. With DVDs presentation of the sex is possible either through viewer scene or story editing. We are talking about how things can change and be made different. Would something like this be anything more than a novelty? Perhaps but it is different. |

To those who think that the untapped female market is the next big thing to hit porn, don't hold your breath. The way porn is made and marketed, especially the stuff from Los Angeles, is not all that appealing. Most of it looks like junk, and that turns off women quicker than anything. Someone else said porn will get better when people start using higher quality cameras. That would be true, if the people holding the cameras had some idea how to operate them properly, how to adjust lighting, how to get a good mix of shots, and not miss a lot of the action. The only thing that seems new and hopeful to me is seeing someone like Jonni Darkko, a trained photographer and non-performer, making movies. |

| Guy Capo DVSX 100 Posts 7/03 | 1) Any more than 6 releases of any given line or title is too much. These lines that are in the 20's and 30's are just horribly recycled ideas that get more monotanous with each release. 2) Pick any of the biggest gonzo directors you can think of...What have they done any differently in the past years to truly contribute something new to the marketplace? What? They came up with a new, catchy title? Please...two minutes into the film you realize you are watching the same cookie-cutter formula, polished up and called something "new". 3) The porn industry is the porn industry's worst enemy. Too many people too stuck in their ways to realize that their "business formula" is exactly what is killing the business. Anyone who thinks things can't be changed, or simply won't change is guilty of lazy, unambitous thinking, if not outright denial of what lies ahead. Do you actually think things won't change, or that a new generation won't take over with a new vision? Everything changes...either by force (Government intervention?), by fate (technology?), or by the few with forethought (If we don't instigate change on our own, we will all be out of work.)

| DIAMOND DOG Deactivated User "Puff Daddy is crap." - Keith Richards 320 Posts 7/04 | He pretty much stated in a more direct way what I was trying to say. I swear to god, I'm so sick of seeing teases that start with a camera shooting a starlets feet from behind and working its way up to her body as she walks toward wherever it is she's going to get fucked. Perhaps there's a slight variation of it here and there, but there is really no difference as a whole. But I also think Guy knows that nothing will change without the people who invest the money taking a decisive stand to help push the change along. I think Queen Jenna has tried to do this with her films recently. Let my stress TRY! I watched Briana Loves Jenna a while ago and thought it was WAY over-directed, much like a bad mainstream movie tends to be. You know what I'm talking about - the director using EVERY camera angle trick in the book, while using every lighting trick there is... Simultaneously. But I think she's (they're) on to something. At least we know some time and care was put into it even though I don't think it hit the mark. If it's harnessed, and a happy medium can be found where a director can establish a high quality look without being overly pretentious, then good things can come. Mind you, I'm talking about doing this in the Gonzo Realm particularly. If this can be accomplished, I will personally keep the man or woman in business with my purchases. I realize this all may be a stretch, but like Guy said, hopefully a change is coming and companies are more lenient with their funds and more demanding on their directors to make a higher quality product. Just my long and bloated 2 cents... |

Here's a little clue: So the best thing for you to do, if I can give you advice like you've given us, is to create movies that will 'revolutionize' porno to the point it sells so well people will flock to your way of thinking, however vague it may be. After all, I suppose you are the true artist in a world of the cookie cutter bullshit director. One thing I learned when I was at Film School "honing my writing, directing, and filmmaking skills" is that change comes from within, generally from those who take chances with rich creativity radically altering the way we look at things. Change will come. That's inevitable. But guess what? Sex is sex is sex is sex ... the lone jackoff still has to be able stroke to it otherwise it's absolutely worthless regardless of what anyone says. | Lazerus Member 187 Posts 9/03 | Well, ultimately the consumer spoke, the demand became so great that everyone had to accept EA's price point whether they liked it or not, and by passing ownership to his directors JS built in an effective quality control for all of the company's releases. While the business has absorbed some of the lessons of the EA model, they have missed the most important: at the end of day, the distributors will do whatever the consumer demands. And quality will win out. But you have to be in it for the long haul--which is tough in a business where everyone is mostly just looking for rent money and is leaving the industry some time next week. I don't think most fans want cable porn; I don't think most fans want mechanical low-budget wall-to-wall either. I think they want attractive, enthusiastic people having hot sex, while being presented with a some degree of erotic context, and made under optimum technical conditions. That can be all kinds of things, but it isn't generally what we see being made today (or yesterday either--most porn has always been shit, don't forget that). All this talk about DVD capacity is interesting, too; I agree that the interactive potential of these discs hasn't even been scratched yet. I always thought some hobbyist with money to burn could make a porn DVD that played like a video game, where you moved from playing the animation to opening hardcore scenes on the disc (like, beat a boss, open a scene). The further you got, the more scenes you opened (plus all the hidden stuff that needs passwords, etc). Of course, the animation could be explicit as well . . . sure would beat those silly "do you want me naughty or nice" interactive porn discs we have now. |
| TonyC Comstock Films 2523 Posts 8/03 | Both innovations are considerably more important to the course of human history than porn that rises to a mainstream entertainment level of production quality and watchablity. The chronograph addressed a need clearly understood by the society and economy of its time, and the airplane offered answers to important social and economic questions that had not yet been asked. No one would be surprised that both Harrison and the Wright Brothers labored for years to perfect their inventions. What might be surprising that even after perfecting their (with hindsight) obviously needed devices, it took more years of toil to convince the market that their curious toys had real economic value. -T.C. <embarrassing typo> Edited by - TonyC on 9/1/2004 10:20:40 AM |

Choose your own adventure, interactive screen savers, games (and not the "click click click" stick a dildo in the anime babe until the orgasm meter hits red and she comes) ... Blender has a nice, open source 3D modelling and game engine hybrid that I've been playing around with for over five years now, but again, it comes down to time and money. I hope someone picks up that ball and runs with it. I think it would be a lot of fun to have Heavy Metal magazine come to life, part movie, part first person shooter, part role-playing game, and part porno. Considering the game demographic is primarily men 18-36, I think the market for something like that could be huge. I'm 33, I know what guys like me like -- I feel my window of opportunity exists, but it's getting smaller. Do I believe I'm going to be the one to revitalize anything? Hell no, but I wouldn't be working with potentially flaky talent, production crews, directors, editors or distributors at all (at first). Do I think I could create some hot virtual sex? Hell yes! Somebody float me some venture capital. (I happen to know some excellent 3D artists, too, some of whom are bored out of their skulls doing shit like modelling kitchen cabinets instead of making movies like they always wanted.) I'd like to at least TRY to make something worthwhile before I'm too old to care and too firmly entrenched in my career, such as it is. I realize it's a fantasy, but fantasy sells, doesn't it? I've even kicked around some motion capture ideas, because the basic motions of fucking and sucking are pretty easy to replicate -- it's the faces and bodies that strike us guys viscerally. As for appealing to women, I'm not completely clueless about how that works, either, if the feedback I get from them isn't just people whistling Dixie up my primary point of contact. Anyway, sorry about throwing my personal agenda into what was becoming an interesting director death-match and fan debate. Ten years from now, I just wanted to be able to say I thought about it, talked about it out loud to people who could help me, and it just didn't work out, rather than never even trying. Please continue...I got nothin'. Should've saved this for Nonsense. |

He sounds like the one who seems to be demanding more from his productions. I'm also going to check out Guy's "Gothsend" (sp?). Interested now in seeing what he does after reading his posts. |
| Guy Capo DVSX 100 Posts 7/03 | Every company owner I have ever met with has heard me resonate my sentiments over and over, especially since the main arguement is overkill. Overkill in the number of the series (What's Dirty Debutants up to? Does anyone care anymore?), overkill in the style of shooting, overkill in the catchy titles with no substance...on and on and on. Mark, Alex, everyone, all of them, have had to sit through my schpeel about overkill, because I want them to know they won't get 35 volumes out of anything I do, and they won't get a stupid ass interview-tease-fuck scene delivery out of me, no matter what their "formula" is. I can't think of a company out there who hasn't fallen into this standard prono trap. The "industry is it's own worst enemy" statement I made...I thought was obvious. The industry has created it's own Frankenstein formula for profit, and driven it into the ground, to be revered as the prime example of how to oversaturate, de-value, and ruin a marketplace. The key to success in the most profitable business ventures lies not in slashing costs and cranking out more and more of a cheaper product. That works in the short haul, but weakens the infrastructure of your industry over time. You end up with exactly what we have in this business...a million copycats who cut costs even further, and force the innovator to stoop even lower to keep up with the decline in overhead. Rather, the most successfull business plans I have analyzed work by creating a better, more costly product, limiting it's availability to a high end niche only, justifying the price with value, and letting the scrubs fight for the low level marketshare. It works every time...If it doesn't work, how come Evil moves more pieces, at a higher market cost, than probably anybody else out there? Why aren't they going broke, when $2 pieces are readily available everywhere? Apparently, even porn consumers understand the value principle, and are willing to pay for it. All companies could get more for their product if there was simply less crap on the market. I am not so egocentric to believe that I can "change the face of porn", or whatever...I can't undo the last 15 years worth of industry downslide. But every day I ask myself, "What did I do today that has made this business and my life a little better?" If I can't answer that question, then I wasted a day out of my life, and blew 24 hours that I could have been working toward improvements. If everyone involved thought this way, things would change...Unfortunately, a lot of people will have to go bankrupt or die off before a handful of visionaries will be able to make any noticable changes in the business. It's very discouraging to the few of us who really want to see porn become a respectable entity, rather than the laughing stock of our culture. On a side note...You lucky bastards at Anabolic have one of the most talented and innovative editors in the business with Ricky D. Unfortunately, he only has copies of my earliest EVOLUTION EROTICA releases...long since out-done by what I have been doing lately. I will gladly give you some of the new stuff to check out. Not that I am embarrassed by my old product, but c'mon...even a bullheaded bitch like myself learns something new every day. Finally, and I'm sorry for rambling on, but I must pay full homage to all the directors, producers, and companies that I hate in the very same breath. My intention is not to make enemies, but rather to rattle cages...It's out of my purest desire to see a group effort made...Change works much better when there is unity in the movement. And for the record, "my way" is indeed "the highway", at least for me. We choose our own paths...mine, historically, are the paths that nobody else wants to walk. Not that everybody has to make movies like me...that would be overkill and de-value what I do. My highway is about bringing integrity and respect to Porn Valley...something we've never had. My only hope is that enough people like what I do so that I can stay in this business long enough for me to put more money than words into making positive changes. PS: Chico, have ever actually met? AVN last year, perhaps? |
| lah Member Melbourne, Australia 13 Posts 8/04 | 1. move from movie based selling to scene based selling. let's face it - it's not like the movies (gonzo ones that is) have a connection between the scenes. there might be a theme but it is not a flow 2. move from dvds to electronic distribution. cheaper since you do not have to make and distribute the media. cut the middle man, sell direct.
porn is a consumable commodity. people view and throw away. people want fast, easy, on demand. amassing a collection is simply too expensive. porn companies have no incentive to acquire others since it will not bring any assets with it (e.g. customers, manufacturing facilities, etc), the manufacturing cost cannot be lowered due to the high portion spent on human resources and if you cannot ask for more money you've got to cut the costs. the only cost that can be cut is distribution. problem is, broadband internet is still far too rare to allow the industry to make these switches. my .02 |
| skronker Notable Legendary Icon Scopophiliac 9780 Posts 9/02 | One thing I find disappointing is, indeed, when new energy comes along (or old energy renews itself) only to fall in step with the same old shit all over again. I find this particularly true of start-up companies where the hype suggests some bold new vision of porn and then, inevitably if not immediately, you're right smack in the boring groove of Teenage Cum Slurpers 35 or Yet Another Three Guy Ass Attack! . One thing I like about Chico's approach, which is love it or hate it, is his glee in totally fucking with the format of lines he inherited. Maybe Mike John is rolling over in his hammock at the horror of it all, but I dig the zany antics. It's different, if nothing else. Guy goes for "scenario" and a slicker presentation. Though, American Gunk is on some other level that's as much culture-jamming as fuckflick. (That's perhaps where he and Chico might collide in a cloud of water tobacco. ) They're both fun and both strokable. Maybe you get a few dialectics like that going, and the consumer is going to win. Or maybe that's too philosophical? Y'know, I haven't even cracked a beer yet. Edited by - skronker on 9/1/2004 9:23:35 PM |

1. advertising is pretty much a non option EA probably sells more through osmosis and because they got on the gonzo bandwagon early and because they have a huge EU presence where there is a tad more options of marketing. they are probably only a tad more successful. i doubt it is through some grand plan |
