A couple of weeks ago I ordered some DVD's again from Lasersedge which I have been doing with no problem for a couple of months now. I'm very happy with Lasersedge and they're my favorite online store right now. The next day I check my status and I see that my creditcard (VISA) has been rejected. I e-mailed Marc who also had no idea what was going and he tried again a couple of times but with no luck. I then called VISA to ask what's going on they said they have put Lasersedge on some kind of black list because they were not safe to buy from. Which means I can't use my VISA card to buy from Lasersedge anymore (they even had the nerve to advice me to avoid Lasersedge).
Of course I can't accept this so I have cancelled my VISA card and I'm waiting for my Mastercard and I hope I will have no problem with it and I can order again from Lasersedge. I am planning to write a complain to VISA about the whole thing because according to Marc they have a very good security system for payments so I'm not sure what the hell VISA is talking about.
I also think it's only the Dutch division of VISA that rejects Lasersedge because the VISA logo is still on the site of Lasersedge of creditcard you can use.
I guess I will be in big trouble if Mastercard rejects them also. Too bad Lasersedge doesn't use PayPal.
That's outrageous! Since when have Visa been deciding who is a suitable retailer or not? It should be for the cardholder to decide how and where they use the card. The CC companies have systems in place to deal with fraud, so a blacklist is ridiculous.
Perhaps it is because you are from the Netherlands? Wasn't there some problem with retailers in the US not accepting CCs from people in certain countries?
VISA has gone mad. I also use to buy DVD's at baresandals.com but they also blocked that site but I'm glad I can still buy their DVD's using PayPal.
I never had a problem using VISA to buy at Lasersedge but all of sudden that ended. The only explanation I got from them was that it's not safe to order from them and that's why we don't want to do business with them and that's why I want to write a complain to see if I can get more info. I wonder if Holland is the only country where VISA is rejecting Lasersedge.
I've just never heard of Visa refusing payments from certain retailers - I'm shocked! This is interesting, because I have just had to put a stop on my Visa card last week, when it was used fraudulently by someone else, and will get a new number card soon.
I can't believe that this would affect all transactions with LE - I mean, if they were no longer able to accept Visa payments, the business might just as well close down. They'd lose massive amounts of orders if people couldn't use credit cards.
As far as Lasersedge is concerned I have to agree that it is not very secure to shop there. I ordered two times and they have sent it as 4 separate shipments. Two of those have never arrived! The delivery time is also unacceptable with shipments taking more than three weeks on average. When I ordered from AdultDVDToday the delivery time is less than a week (from Hawaii to Germany!
Another thing: PayPal seems to move away from all things porn currently as already posted here. My favorite online store DVDDiscount.tv in the Netherlands have just informed me that they are unable to accept PayPal anymore because PayPal has cancelled the contract due to the XXX stuff the sell.
Well, that's nothing to do with secure-shopping. The issue we're discussing here is whether LE protects credit card information that is transmitted to, and stored by, their website and ecommerce systems. I am happy with their site, in so far as I can tell what level of security they have.
Unless of course there is an unusually high incidence of LE packets going missing that leads to people doing credit card chargebacks to reclaim their money. Then Visa might be a little annoyed.
I've been buying movies from Lasersedge for 6 months now and NEVER had a billing problem. Of course I'm not sure if other Dutch customers had problems with Lasersedge while using their VISA card. As for shipping goes; I only had one package go missing (which was refunded) that was when Lasersedge was using their old shipping service. Their new service works great, not one package goes missing and it takes about 14 days from the US to Holland.I think you might have a valid point here timotei, this could be the reason why VISA doesn't want to do business with Lasersedge anymore but that would be very unfair because Lasersedge switched shipping service and the new one works great. I wonder if this would be a reason for VISA to take Lasersedge of their black list .
Whenever I log on at Lasers Edge I get a pop up saying 'You are about to be redirected to a connection that is not secure'. I've never paid much attention to this because the Lasers Edge site, rather than taking you directly to your account, redirects you to the page you logged on from. I've never had any payment problems with Lasers Edge (or any other online retailer for that matter) but, given the stance of Ramsey's CC company, it would be nice to hear from Marc on the issue of security.
Keep in mind that VISA is an association of many member banks around the world. It might not actually be VISA itself that is blocking the transaction but rather the card-issuing bank (presumably in the Netherlands). These banks have a vested interest in minimizing their losses. So it could be possible that Ramsey's card issuer is not allowing the transaction, while others may not have a problem.
Visa has been canceling processing rights for many adult sites that do not follow their revised rules. However, I'm not sure if this is what's hitting Laser's Edge.
Visa put out a list of requirements and exclusions a few months back for all adult sites to follow. There were some pretty strict terms on it. They stated that in order to process with visa your site could not mention 'teen', 'lolita' and whole mess of other words.
Visa is also getting extremely strict on their chargeback rates. If a company is over or close to a 1% chargeback rate they are in danger of losing their Visa processing or faced with enormous financial penalties.
That seems a bit of a crude way to decide how "appropriate" a site is. I fully appreciate that Visa want to avoid being seen as aiding the distribution of child porn, but surely the real bad guys who are selling that kind of stuff are not exactly going to make it so blatant, using words like that. All those rules will just penalise lots of legitimate adult sites who sell titles that may sound like they contain underage kids (to the average person in the street) but don't at all.
Sounds heavy-handed to me - hassling legit businesses, and not actually stamping out the activities they presumably are doing this for.
Visa is actively trying to make it harder and harder on adult businesses whether legitimate or not. Visa is not required by law to process transactions for anyone and everyone. They set the terms however ridiculous they may seem to you and me.
I asked Marc to check out this thread and I hope he can shed more light on this subject. I also wonder if Holland is the only country where VISA will not accept Lasersedge. I don't think they're rejecting Lasersedge because they're selling adult material because they also have a mainstream section and to my knowledge VISA can't see which movies I order, it's none of their business anyway.
I personally hope there will be a better pay-system in the future, a more safe and easy system.
Hey guys, Ramsey made me aware of the discussion. I have been kind of swamped lately trying to get a ton of new stuff added to the site, setting up a "Toy" site, clearing out older titles (check out our SPECIALS & BARGAINS page!) and processing all your orders.
As for this VISA situation, it seems isolated to Ramsey's card issuing bank. Not sure why as our bank can't even confirm the "Black List". We have never had a chargeback from any bank based in The Netherlands, so the situation confuses me. However because it involved other merchants and not just us it seems that it isn't the "ADULT BAN" that Drew mentions. Therefore, I can't figure out the random ban of internet sites. I would be curious as to their criteria for a ban especially since we were never notified of any problems nor was our bank.
As for the security of our site, the account information, login screens and checkout process are all located on a secure server. The message that pops up indicates unsecure images since images are located on the regular server. The site dynamically creates the pages and the banner adds are being pulled from another server.
No new updates from me besides the fact that I'm very happy I can buy from Lasersedge again using my Mastercard. It seems only the Dutch department of VISA is blocking Lasersedge.
You should be fine Dexter Day as long as you don't live in Holland ;-)
I'm not sure ehre you got your information Ramsey I've been buying DVD from Baresandals for a year and never had a problem using my Visa. Yes they accept Paypal too, but their regular cart works just as well for me.
To my knowledge only the Dutch division of VISA blocked baresandals and the same goes for blocking Lasersedge because people from other countries can use VISA just fine.
It's good to see a fellow baresandals fan here ;-)
