(I know there is a popular Firefox extension called NoScript that has something to do with Java, but don't use it myself and don't know exactly what it does, or whether it might be hanging you up here.) You can go to java.com and click on the "verify installation" link (they make it tiny, so as to present a particular challenge to 50 year olds) to make sure you're got the latest version. If neither of the above work, and if you're using Firefox as your web browser, you can install the ChatZilla extension - https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/16/ . It's pretty easy to configure.
