It's pretty.

Sure I paid $2200 for it (tax included). Luckily I found $850 in rebates. Now I can watch my porn on the road... (and do reviews on the spot).

Fonze thumbs up.

Anybody else use a Sony portable notebook? I just saw it; thought it was pretty and ignored what's under the hood.

i just checked out that link cobalt, i don't think northwood p4s in notebooks are a very good idea-especially at those speeds. the dothans in morbid's laptop are amazing chips, basically as fast as the higher clockspeeds, any pentium M is faster than any celeron. and they're nice and cool and light and better than anything else out there for notebooks. i've got a g4 powerbook which still works for travelling stuff, but i don't see how they can make a competitive g5--ibm makes the cpu and ibm can't scale the things faster without liquid cooling, which is a no-no in notebooks.

I know how hard it is to find a good notebook. I've been looking for work for months, and I always have to sacrifice on something. Here are my criteria:

* Sub-4 lbs (3.5lb target) including optical drive and battery
* At least a 1.2ghz Pentium-M or higher
* 1GB RAM
* Mini-PCI 802.11a/b/g
* Widescreen aspect preferable, size of display doesn't matter
* Built-in DVD+/-RW drive or one in a media slice (no external USB drives)
* Touchstick (aka Trackpoint) instead of or along with a touchpad
* At least 2 USB 2.0 ports
* Built-in Wi-Fi radio on/off switch would be nice
* Built-in Bluetooth nice but not required
* Biometric sensor optional
* At least 4 hour real-world battery life without secondary batteries
* Brand name (purchasing won't buy anything that is not from a major vendor)
* Metal alloy case
* < $4,000USD

There are a couple of models from IBM, Sony, Dell, Panasonic, and Fujitsu that come close in most categories. It really sucks when you have a P.O. waiting but no product that you'd really be happy with. One of my co-workers ended up getting an Apple Powerbook for the features and is running all of the apps using Virtual PC. Sad...

I've always heard the nicer thinkpad "T" series are about the best notebooks you can buy. vaio z1s are supposed to be solid as well-both should realistically do anything pretty fast for under 3k.

Notebook wise, I don't need a helluva lot. My iBook is great.Sturdy plastic, 14-inch screen (would prefer 15 but the compactness is worth it) , plays movies, does the iTunes stuff, popped on Windows for Mac office programs, and since I only use it for travel, it's got really low mileage. Sooner or later, I'll get into digital video shooting and editing, but I'll save that for a desktop system tooled spedifically for the function. I'm not much of a gearhead, unless we;re talking hifi.

You're right: I'm usually shopping for a desktop replacement. Different needs. That Pro-Star is probably 10 pounds, at least and they do run hot .

Everyone I know who has or had a VAIO loved it. You should be very happy together.

try not to gum up the keyboard.

Sony products are good and comparible with Dell. I belive Toshiba and IBM are still the top of the brand name heap.

Alienware are powerful but you pay for it. And if you're using it for work they don't look terribly professional.

Well my s260p glitched on me after 18 months. The LED lights come on when I try to power on but nothing else does. If I try a couple of times it eventually does. Off to the repairs it goes.

Warranty expired but maybe this applies.

If not, I'm looking at either a 200 dollar repair or a 700 dollar repair (motherboard or LCD). Might as well get a new one if it's a 700 dollar repair.
