How can I search the IAFD database or any other adult film database by ethnicity? I would like to see who the middle eastern, especially Iranian/Persian porn stars are.

I don't think the advanced search [ invalid url ] quite goes to that depth yet, but you can do a site specific Google search on iafd.com

e.g.

persian site:www.iafd.com

Thank you. Do you know of any other databases that do allow you to search this category?

Would be a great addition to the fantastic iafd.com site. I hope you can pass it along.

We (IAFD) have discussed separating our "Ethnicity" field into two distinct fields: Ethnicity and Nationality

When we finally do this, it will help you search a bit easier for what you are looking for in this regard.
It is not an urgent item on our to do list (the info is there, albeit mixed together), but it is on the list

A perfect example of why this would be a good thing is Katsumi: Ethnicity = Asian; Nationality = France

Fantastic! Please make sure to include Middle Eastern or have a search bar where I can type in Iranian. I know most websites just group Middle Eastern with Caucasian and that ruins everything.

I'll be looking forward to it and I'll spread the word. Thanks again.

This reads like a good idea although I suspect that in reality it will be a huge task.

I've noticed many anomolies with ethnicity on IAFD due, I suspect, to the contributors coming from many different countries. In some of these countries the writers first language might not be English, in others the language might be the same but the understanding different.

A prime example would be Czechoslovakia which split some years ago into the Czech Republic (or some say Czechia) and Slovakia (or some say Slovak Republic).

Not being American it has always struck me how important an individuals "original" ethnicity appears to be to an American; almost it sometimes seems to the extent of a denial of being American.

Being British and from England I would give my ethnicity as English. However my country was invaded, and impregnated, by the Vikings (Scandinavian), the Normans (French) and the Anglo Saxons (German). My family tree implies that the Vikings probably never got as far west and south as my ancestors location; it is probable that there is Norman blood in my family (based upon Doomsday records); the Anglo Saxons certainly came as far north as my ancestors location (and the word England is derived from Anglo); and I most likely also have some original Celt blood in the family line as well.

So is my ethnicity English or is it Celtic/Scandinavian/French/German.

"English" is not an ethnicity, it is a nationality.

I would consider England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales all to be nationalities (even though they could also be lumped together as United Kingdom... which I would not favor doing).

From what you've written, I suspect your ethnicity would be Caucasian.

Certainly, for the purposes of porn, your ancestry is not important to the porn consumer. More importantly, it is impossible for the IAFD, or anyone else, to determine one's ancestry from the normal sources of porn information.

Huge task, yes.
But, once we separate nationalities into their own field, most other terms we are already using are ethnicities.

Some will need to be cleaned-up.
For example, saying "Spanish" or "Mexican" (both nationalities) when one really means "Hispanic" or "Latin" (both ethnicities).
Now, if someone were Spanish, we wouldn't possibly be able to determine if their ancestry was "Moorish" or not

Sometimes, we may only know, or be able to determine, one or the other.
There will probably be many instances where we could say someone is Caucasian, Black, or Asian without knowing their nationalities.

Now, if we were to believe the porn producers, girls can be Caucasian one day, and Latina the next.
Some girls, like Dee have been cast as almost any ethnicity the producer needed (except Caucasian)

In any event, my goal (and I'm just one IAFD administrator) is to clearly separate nationalities into their own field, so that searching for what you want becomes easier.
Going back to my earlier example of Katsumi, most strokers are interested in the fact that her ethnicity is Asian. I seriously doubt that anyone is thinking French if they are looking for her (yet French is her nationality).

If there are multiple terms in a single field, what, in fact, becomes the search term? Would the order they were listed in be an issue (i.e. "French, Asian" vs. "Asian, French")?

On the other hand, I'm sure many strokers would want to perform one of the following searches:

Asian (ethnicity); Chinese (nationality)
Asian (ethnicity); Japanese (nationality)
Asian (ethnicity); American (nationality)
Caucasian (ethnicity); Czech (nationality)
Caucasian (ethnicity); English (nationality)
Caucasian (ethnicity); American (nationality)
Caucasian (ethnicity); Canadian (nationality)
Hispanic (ethnicity); Mexican (nationality)
Hispanic (ethnicity); Puerto Rican (nationality)
Jewish (ethnicity); Israeli (nationality)
Jewish (ethnicity); American (nationality)
and many more...

Bottom line: two fields will make it easier to zoom-in on what you're looking for.

John,

For you, I'd go with English. I mean, if we wanted to, we could all trace ourselves back to the fertile crescent, right? :)

Ask someone to name the most famous black golfer and you'd probably get a common answer. But ask someone to name the most famous Asian golfer and there may be some hesitation. Ironic.

Trying to define ethnicities is controversial and there's not going to be a universally consistent way of labeling them.

Arabs and Asians can be Caucasian. Hispanics can be white, black, and even asian. As Paul Rodriguez, the comedian, explained: "That's because we'll fuck anyone."

Using the Katsumi example, she may be Asian to a lot of people. Other people may consider her Caucasian. IAFD happens to label her as being French/Vietnamese. That's probably as exact as it's going to get.

But it's not a fine science although these freaks might disagree (about Katja Kassin).

Ethnicities are clearly outlined for the most part, there maybe some exceptions but very very few. Arabs are defined as Caucasian and not Asian on many factors (i.e. cultural similarities and common biological traits). Their nationalities can all vary, from American to French to Chinese.

An additional thought strikes me with the mention of caucasian - which my dictionary essential defines as white - and the generally common ancestry of the British and the Americans (from 1492). Geneticists now agree that the majority of the British population will find at least one person of African descent (i.e. black) in their family tree. This goes back to at least the Roman invasion of the British Isles when many of the legions were African. This, of course, pre-dates 1492.

I also heard on the radio today that the gene pool of the "original" British (the Celts of Ireland, Wales, Scotland and Cornwall) have their basis in the Basque peoples - which is essentially Spanish (Hispanic).

It all comes down to defining a starting point I suppose.

Absolutely right. The porn consumer will probably use an "ethnicity" search to find performers with certain physical features which, rightly or wrongly, are commonly associated with a particular ethnic group. While the examples of ethnic complexity given by John.h2 and morbigthoughts are interesting, we should keep in mind that the IAFD would be instituting this feature for practical purposes and not as an intervention in some theoretical debate.

But while we're being theoretical:

There are quite a few in the Basque Country who would disagree. Many Basque citizens, possibly the majority, identify both their ethnicity and their nationality as Basque, not Spanish or Hispanic. In any case, the Basque ethnicity is not "essentially Spanish (Hispanic)" - it is pre-Hispanic, i.e. it predates the founding of the Roman governate of Hispania.
