Regarding your question about whether pay-by-scene will have an effect on features, I don't see why it would. People watch features because they want a story. They want the movie experience.

How many scenes do you need to like in a movie in order for it to be "worth it" to you? Would this pay-per-scene "i-tunes" model be something you would be interested in? One segment that may not be as receptive to this are feature movie makers , where scenes may be preferred to be seen in the context of the story of the film (for both the director and viewers who prefer movies in this genre), but do you think this "i-tunes" like model would create economic pressure even on that segment of the industry? Would there be enough of people like this to make the "i-tunes" option a financial viable motive for a company like Club-Jenna?(given that they continue making the full movie avaliable for that segment of their customer base) These are questions that individual companies would have to find a solution to, but I thought some speculation on them here would be interesting discussion as well. I'd guess that part of the answer may lie in the number of consumers who don't like feature movies due to the visual presentation of the sex, vs. those who don't like them because they think there isn't enough sexual interaction ,in general, for their dollar (of course these two groups may not necessarily be mutually exclusive). I am to the point where I will almost NEVER buy a gonzo DVD release unless I'm certain I'm going to like all the scenes. And with the prevalence of gonzo vs Feature porn, made-for-web content and digital photography/filming I think you've got massive libraries of already-digital media out there in storage. Some companies, Devil's Films and Combat Zone, are already doing this. They charge a monthly sub model but you can download the scenes you want for a flat monthly rate as opposed to grabbing the entire DVD. Scene-only releases tend to lag the DVD releases, but this business model makes sense. Just look at the release model for DVD's in the industry today...people talk about a new DVD release, it gets released, reviews ensue, a few scenes from each DVD get good reviews OFTEN WITH MORE FOCUS THAN THE DVD ITSELF! So the boards like this one tend to talk about "such and such in this scene from Generic Porn DVD #20" and then people go and try and find that DVD -OR-, more often today than in the past, go and try to find that scene on bittorrent or Usenet for free. I'd love to be able to click on a review, see a scene that gets high marks, and click thru to that actual clip for purchase in near DVD quality. A few companies grasp this as a business model now and I think even more will soon. The difficulty is in setting up the delivery model and indexing your content so that it's available for delivery in this fashion. It'll happen...already is. I'll still buy DVD's just like I still buy CD's today. Sometimes I want the whole thing, or sometimes I'm a collector of a certain talents' body of work and I want to have everything. There are no "liner notes" in Porn so nothing of value to me there....but the BTS and DVD extra's are sometimes enough of a gimme to get me to ante up for the whole thing. Download-2-Own sites like Videobox make getting a collection of scenes child's play. HotMovies has clips.com which is designed to sell scenes not whole movies. Empire and others are getting into the act, too, tho most of them are still stuck on a per-movie model; but that's only a matter of time. Will this model replace everything? I doubt it -- there's still people out there without high speed internet, without the desire to download long scenes, etc. There's something to be said for walking into the local Smut Emporium, plunking down $20 and walking out with a 4 hour SinCity/Vivid/Whomever compilation. Total time is probably less than it is to download a DVD worth of stuff and burn it yourself. Keep in mind that we geeks on the message boards are still a minority in the marketplace. Comps and such are the bread and butter and yet I doubt you'll find many comp cheerleaders on the message board. :-) [Link] |
