Hi there, forum newbie here. I'm writing here because I desperately need some help with a piece of software and I need to know what I am doing wrong. I download from some of the top websites that I have paid membership to, and to do this efficiently I use a program called Internet Download Manager (IDM). This is the second piece of software that I have tried to use for its intended purpose (the other being Download Accelerator Plus 10) but the same problem remains - despite me saving my Login details for every website I have membership to, IDM/DAP10 still requires Login information before the download can start or continue after being Paused.
I have systematically entered the server name of the file, the username, and the password for each site I am a member of. Why on earth then, when the first file has downloaded does the next one in the queue not start, and always - and I mean always - ask me to enter my membership details? Furthermore, why when I do enter my details, does the box reappear asking me to enter it again? I have already saved it in the 'Site Logins' tabs and also in the Properties tab of the actual file, so this is utterly confusing and immensely frustrating for me. Other times, I will get an error telling me that the webpage has expired even though it is still open in my browser. I have to clear it from the IDM and re-save it as the first file in the queue to actually get it to download. I have exactly the same problem for when I have Paused or Stopped a file in the middle of a download and then tried to Resume it. When I go to Resume it asks for the Login details, I input them, it keeps asking for them and in the end I have to remove it and start again.
I spend most of my time out of the house, which means I get the most out of my membership by leaving files to download while I am out of the house. But nothing is more annoying to find that I have been out all day and all I have got when I come back is one bloody file because the next hasn't started because its wanting my membership details. I would think the most important utility of a download manager is for it to be configured to effectively manage your downloads while you are not at your PC. But alas neither IDM (which I am currently using), or DAP10 in the past, have allowed me to do this it seems. This is even more galling when you consider that I actually paid for legitimate full copies of both of these programs.
So what I am asking for really, is a foolproof step-by-step guide on how to set up IDM (or DAP 10) so that whatever I queue to download will automatically start downloading once the previous file has finished, and that if I should want to Pause/Stop and then Resume later it will simply carry on and finish without asking for Login details. Either that, or some general pointers to some basic things that I may be overlooking, or as a last resort, an alternative download manager that does not have these issues. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I feel like I am being ripped off by paying money for these programs and despite setting up through seemingly simple options, am not getting what I am paying them to do. Many thanks in advance.

Maybe it's not a problem with your software, but rather the sites have things set up to make it harder for members to mass-download their content? What sites are you talking about?
I've used FlashGot and Free Download Manager for a long time, and have always found them to work well. They're freeware.

Harri has a point, many sites have restrictions on downloadmanagers. If you use Firefox you can try Down-them-all, that has settings for limiting your downloadspeed and how many concurrent downloads you can do.

I'm a longtime user of DownThemAll (DTA), which is a Firefox add-on. It is free. I use it all the time for mass downloading. You'd need to open Firefox, manually login into your subscribed website(s), queue up the files in DTA, tell it where you want the files saved, click "start", and walk away. IMO those self-contained download managers (like IDM) are better suited for people who use Rapidshare and similar filehosters, which require multiple steps to download each file. For simple direct downloads like you are doing(?), IDM is overkill and bloat and needless complexity. But if you are determined to stick with that type of downloader manager, you might want to give JDownloader a try. I don't use it (it was overkill for my needs) but it seems to be very popular.

Excuse me but this so-called popular Flash Get just does not work and nowhere does it explain how to actually use it. The same can be said for Free Download Manager. With FDM, you queue up some downloads, it does one then cancels the rest saying "Bad URL". And with FlashGet, no matter what website I try, it just downloads a stupid 35k Login.txt file rather than the actual video, despite copying and pasting the exact address of the video. FYI I am using Chrome now being as DTA for Firefox was having the same problems. For example, I would queue some scenes from Naughty America, it would get most of the way then I would get a 400 Error and then all the downloads, even the queued ones, would cancel. I get similar problems from Jules Jordan, Elegant Angel, and Brazzers, where I would get a 413 Error half way through the download, or when a download starts after being in the queue it again downloads a Login.txt file. The only way I can download videos from these sites is if I right-click 'Save As' them one at a time, which is utterly useless because it means I have to be at my PC to start the next download manually. Furthermore, why is it when I download them like this there are never any problems with 400/413 Errors and I get them no problem? Surely it's same same connection to the same address and the same server? It's racking my brain.
Apologies for dragging this thread up again but it is just so frustrating when all I want is a simple download manager, and when I use ones that everybody else recommends/has no problems with, I have nothing but problems with them. It's like whatever one I try that anybody suggests, there's something really basic that it does not do. Any advice on how to properly use FDM or FlashGet or configure DTA in Firefox so that I do not get these problems would be extremely helpful.

All I need to do to download stuff in Firefox with the Flashgot -- not Flashget -- and Free Download Manager extensions installed is to right-click on the download's link; in the pop-up menu, select "Download with Free Download Manager," change anything that needs to be changed in the "Add download" box that pops up (including checking the "user name and password are required" box, if what you're downloading requires those), and hit OK. Could hardly be any easier. You don't have to copy and paste URLs.

When using Firefox, JDownloader works very well with Flashgot as well (Flashgot grabs the link(s) and JDownloader does the download). DownloadThemAll is also a very good download manager for Firefox.

I have never, ever used a download manager before but now I've started joining porn sites it's dawning on me pretty quickly that it might be a good idea to have one. Could someone possibly help me with an overview of exactly what download managers are, how to use them & recommend one please? Thanks!

Download managers allow you to select multiple files to download then controls how they are downloaded. For example, if you selected 10 files to download and don't use a download manager, your Internet browser will attempt to download them all at once and if there are any problems with any connection, individual downloads will fail and you will need to start them all over again.
A download manager will allow you to pre-define how many files you want to download simultaneously, for the most part, they will allow failed downloads to be restarted where you left off (they will attempt to do that automatically). They can also increase download speeds by downloading files in "chunks" simultaneously. Rather than downloading a file in one piece, they will break that file up into a pre-determined (by you) number of pieces and then reassemble those pieces when they are all finished being downloaded. So, if you attempted to download a 600MB file, and were setup for 4 segments, behind the scenes, 4 downloads of 150MB would take place.

^ Thanks for the reply. I still don't understand how I actually use a download manager. At the moment I log in to my chosen website, right-click my chosen video file and 'save' it like that. I've found I can still have about ten downloads in progress concurrently using this method. The problem for me is the sheer volume of content I want to download; using the manual method is tedious and time-consuming. How do I download a large number of videos from a site using a DM? Thanks again for any assistance.

After you've installed a download manager, when you right click the file that you want to download, the options that you're given will also include using the download manager. Some download managers will allow you to highlight multiple links or even a full page of links and load them into the download manager.
But, realistically, with paid sites, you're really still talking about selecting files to be downloaded one at a time. But, you can stack up as many as you want in a download manager and allow them to download in whatever manner works best for your connection. With the sites that I belong to, a single download can be downloaded at full speed (I pay for 50Mbps, but actually get a little over 70Mbps), so I just let the files download one at a time. But, when I've first joined sites, I've had as many as 40 or 50 scenes stacked up in the download queue waiting their turn.

I'm using Firefox as my browser. I use both DownloadThemAll and a combination of JDownloader and Flashgot. FLashgot is a tool that integrates Firefox with pretty much any Download Manager. After setting Flashgot up to point to the Download Manager of your choice, you right click on a file, select Flashgot and it will kick off your Download Manager if it's not open and send the file info to that Manager.
I've never used Free Download Manager. But, if Harri Patel says that he likes it, it must be OK.

Okay, so I've started using FDM but still finding it tedious selecting scenes individually and loading them into the manager. Does anyone know how to download a full page of links using FDM without having to select them all one by one? Tried playing around with it but I'm too much of a noob to figure it out for myself - the manual is as clear as mud too. Any help greatly appreciated.

^ What sites do you think would actually allow that? Even if they did, how would it work? Most sites have multiple versions of scenes to download. SD, HD (in some cases multiple version of both SD & HD)and mobile. You don't want to download all versions. How would this program know what you want to download and what you don't?

^ You said yourself in a previous post (above) that some managers will allow you to load full pages of links. Wasn't sure if FDM is one of them - doesn't look like it. Good point about the different download versions (HD, SD etc) - to be honest, I hadn't thought of that. Not sure I like the tone of your post, though - I did say I was a noob.

Yes I did. But, I haven't seen any sites that have links to more than one scene on a given page. Every pay site that I've seen requires you to click on a link that brings up a new page that contains information about a given scene and the download links for that scene. Essentially, they are setup specifically to prevent people from doing what you want to do.
If you've seen sites that don't work that way and really want to download everything on that page, try Download 'em all or Flashgot (pointing to JDownloader). They both have the option to download every link on a page. There are some places where that is a useful option. But, IMO, it doesn't work for paysites.

^ Understood. No harm in asking, though, was there? I'd be surprised if I were the first. Ah well, back to the tedium it is, then. Thanks for the advice.

^I've never used FDM. Just took a quick look at their webpage. The "spider" feature (if it works the way it seems to say it does) looks like it might help you get at those links of interest with less tedium. There is also a forum at the FDM site, which may contain some useful info for you. Overall, it seems like a powerful application with lots of features which will take work and experience to fully understand.

^ Thanks mate. Yeah, it does have the 'HTML spider' feature but I'm damned if I know how to use it or even if it will do what I want. Like I said, I'm far from an expert on these things but how hard can it be to say to your manager "Here's a page of links, download everything for me, one at a time in, say, mp4 480p"? It's only the same as what I'm doing now (and, believe me, I do have the patience) - just a lot less time consuming.

^OK you got the best of my curiosity. I installed FDM and it is more capable than your posts seem to indicate. Even if it cannot automatically detect a page full of links (but I was able to do that), you can use notepad to compile a bunch of links, creating a .txt file which is a list of all those links, and name it (for example) bigasslinklist.txt
Then open FDM and click:
File-->Import-->Import list of downloads
and then point to the file bigasslinklist.txt
This will load the whole list into FDM in a single step.
Or you fine tune this further by
using the firefox add-on addmoretexttoclipboard which will allow you to use the clipboard instead of
notepad, which might be easier way to accumulate all the links without the back-and-forth switching to/from notepad. In that case you would do: file-->import-->import list of URLs from clipboard
Or you can use something like akelpad instead of notepad. With akelpad you can set it for "always on top" which eases the back-and-forth of creating the .txt file.
You still have to browse the paysite to pick/choose which files you want to download. I don't see any reasonable way around that. I don't know of any website where I'd want to download absolutely everything without doing at least a cursory look before committing to use up HDD space and internet bandwidth.
I think FDM has the capability to do what you want in a more automated way than my suggestions above, but it'd be difficult to teach/learn via a forum such as this.
Hope this helps.

^ Thanks a bunch for your assistance with this. I don't always want to download every link on a page - but occasionally I'll come across a site I like so much that I do. It's only a problem when that is the case. Usually, I'm happy to be selective and load my scenes in one at a time.
One more question about FDM (and, yes, I've done a general search on this but no joy): from time to time one of my downloads will stop for no apparent reason that I can understand. Sometimes the download can be on 90+ percent when this happens. If I try to resume it, a pop-up says "access denied: invalid username/password". All I can do then is delete it and load it in again. This happens completely arbitrarily and is a real head-scratcher; it might happen once for every ten downloads - don't understand it at all. Does anyone know if there is a way to resume these 'halted' downloads without having to start over? By the way, I'm currently using FDM to download from Bangbros.com (and only that) if that makes any difference.

"access denied: invalid username/password" can mean several things depending on the server setup. It could simply be that your access has timed out or it could mean that you're downloading too much in a certain time period and the system kicks you out. Lots of sites have measures in place against people spidering the whole site or downloading too much.

^ Yeah, I figured as much but the Bangbros. site states "absolutely unlimited downloads" (unless they're lying). Also, I don't have downloads going concurrently, I've configured FDM to do one at a time. When I add a download from the site I leave the 'require username/password' box unchecked and I'm never prompted for one at that point. Like I said, most complete without issue - it's just the odd one. Strange.

Then it's most likely a simple session timeout. HTTP authentication can be set to time out at will, that's why on for instance bank sites your session might time out after 5 or 10 minutes of inactivity. Just downloading with a dl-manager does not necessarily keep your session alive.
Maybe you should try it with the password option switched on, then your dl-manager can resend your credentials if it gets that error.

@N00dlesDaddy:
Are you using Firefox browser? Based on what you have revealed in your posts here, DownThemAll (a Firefox add-on) quite likely can do what you want, with less complexity than FDM. DownThemAll will detect and load all the links; and you just click the checkboxes to select/unselect the ones you want before clicking 'start'. FDM is overly complex for your requirement IMO.

Quite possibly. I went with it because it comes up first on every search and seems to have a lot of commendations. I haven't used anything else so don't have anything to compare it to in terms of complexity. I can see I'll have to look into an alternative (most likely DownThemAll), although - touch wood - FDM seems to be working okay for the time being (ie. not halting downloads).
