Why do a majority of the porncompanys (realitykings, muffia, bangbros and brazzers for example)that produce for the web still release their scenes in fullframe 4:3 framing? Almost everyone watches the scenes on widescreen TV:s or their laptops that are very seldom in that format.
I think its also strange that so few of them dont release their scenes in ast least 720p resolution which works great on computers or high definition tv:s connected to computers.

It is a strange one and there's also an inconsistancy in that some companies will release one scene 16:9 and other ones 4:3. New Sensations and Pink Visual usually release all new scenes in 16:9 format.
More annoying than releasing scenes in that format are the scenes that are poorly encoded even when the resolution and bitrate is quite high and some of the bigger name companies are guiltier than the smaller/independant ones for this.

Yes I totally agree with you. The worst is when they shoot a scene in 16:9 but release it in letterbox so when watching it on a widescreen monitor without zoomoption you get black bars on every sides. Bangbros have a lot of these in their updates.

it's not unheard of to have a normal resolution laptop or monitor these days. most people here, or on any forum will have newer stuff, because, well we already established we all spend a lot of time on the computer. People either with an old one, or with a monitor that they still have, but put with a new desktop, or other similar reasons. Same with tv's. I have an el cheapo flatscreen from a couple years ago...but my brother bought a much bigger CRT tv, and it works just fine still...
Same reason that last i checked a lot of sites still come out with a smaller file version in low res...not just 'not hd'...i'm talkin like some 45mb realmedia file at a resolution to small for today's mp3 players. Because as odd as it seems to those of us who spend a lot of time on the internet, there are still people without high speed internet...
i guess tech-starved people have needs too.
edit: and i just thought of something else...don't know if it makes sense.
widescreen laptops have the same up and down pixels, the screen is just wider. showing a reg size movie on that just gives you bars on the side. showing a widescreen movie on a reg size screen you'd have to lose resolution.
widescreen = 1200 x 768 so showing something at 1024 x 768 is no issue.
regular sized = 1024 x 768, so to show a widescreen image you'd have to shrink it a little, causing a lower quality picture.
so we can show normal vids easier than they can show widescreen.

If I look at the stats I have access to the majority of computer users do still have a 4:3 screen, so it makes sense to use that format.
Wraithlead has a good point, not everybody has the newest and latest equipment. Those who have are overrepresented on messageboards like this. The average Joe Consumer has average equipment, usually a few years old.

16:9 is preferred as that's what my monitor is (anyone who doesn't have at least a 24", go buy one now :D ). 4:3 doesn't bother me, and if they think they make more money from it, who am I to say differently?
The only thing that really pisses me off are websites that put out videos in the wrong aspect ratio. Most common is 4:3 encoded at 72 hex 480, or a 1.5:1 aspect ratio. New Sensations takes 1.77:1 videos and wrongly encodes them at 1.85:1. Last site I joined meant to encode 4:3 content at 72 hex 480 so they put black bars on the two sides... except they then encoded it at 64 hex 480 - in the end it is 1.33:1 content viewed at 1.185:1.
Confusing and irritating.
At least the .wmv file format supports custom aspect ratios so I can correct them.

Hi everybody. I have some quick tech-newbie questions.
I don't know much about any of this stuff, but after reading the last two posts I got curious so I checked what the resolution is on my laptop (Dell Inspiron, maybe 3 yrs old).
It says I have it set to max resolution, 1440 x 900. What does that mean in terms of HD or whatever?
When people talk about 1080p and stuff like that, are they referring to the same type of thing, or something different?
I'm only asking out of curiosity, since I'm not in a financial position to be buying a new computer or TV right now. Thanks for any help y'all can give me.

I know the video resolution considered for 720p is 128 hex 720. 1080p is somewhere around 144 hex 1080

sorry, that's not exactly correct. my 720p is 1024 x 768 or something like that...
to k.b. the best i could say is google something like the following words "720p" "1080i" "difference" and you'll pull up some tech writeups aimed directly at newbs. that's what i had to do. I'm no expert, but i'll see if i can't think it through...
for laptops, the biggest thing to check is the max resolution. i have a dell lattitude, 14" screen widescreen. i am also on 1440 x 900...so i bet you and i have the same stuff, just mine is from the business line. you have a widescreen, and it's going to be high res...as to how it translates to tvs, that's more complicated.
edit here: to make an example...all dells have a sort of evolution through the years...the widescreens of today...the previous models were all standard width...but for the lattitude i had at the time, you could get the base 1024 x 768, or the more expensive graphics card, and it would jump to somewhere in the range of 1200 x 900...
so even though both came with the same size screen, the one had more pixels, so was a much better picture. that's the difference between 720 and 1080...the difference between the 'i' and the 'p' is something else...
HD stuff is similar to that...but it also has to do with your video card, etc. it's also got to do with the diff between plasma and LCD...
this is where i get to laugh at myself for overthinking and making smoke come from my ears...
check here...Clicky teh linky
from what i know, only on tv's bigger than, say, 50" will the most picture-sensitive people be able to tell the diff between 720p and 1080i, and even then only with a full blu-ray dvd, dvd player, HDMI cables, etc...
but again...i'm no expert...no videophile or audiophile...the stuff i know is just cause i was bored one day...

@Wraith, theoretically we're both right. There's maybe three or four resolutions that make up a true 720p resolution yet still keep the 16:9 ratio.
@KB, your monitor can support 720p video files since the 720 in that stands for number of vertical pixel lines. your max monitor resolution has 900 lines. The p (and letter i when they talk of 1080i) just stands for how moving video is processed

Thanks DreadSynapse and wraithlead. My curiosity has been sated. :)
edit: a bunch of the articles about 1080i vs 1080p that I found when I initially searched were from '05, '07, etc. But this one is from March 2009, so likely pretty up-to-date.

@ dreadsynapse, Yeah, I knew you could be right...but that there were more options for people with curiosity. since he asked from the standpoint of a newb, i was just trying to say that all the terms could mean different things...it's all good.
@ KB, I'm glad you found what you were looking for...lol, like i said, i would have given more info...but i just did my online checking for bargain basement stuff with all the black friday sales over the past couple years...
and as for your search...i'm glad you found a few places to look for info...and just so you know...with a lot of the sales going on, you can get a really good flatscreen monitor, and use your same laptop, but with a port expander to grab extra outputs if you needed to. so having a bigger monitor for the computer you already have isn't impossible...
man...wow...just wow...i just re-read my post. Maybe i should skip the porn forums, and just go for the ellipsis dot fan club...sorry.

720p is 128 hex 720
1080i is 192 hex 1080
1080p is 192 hex 1080
These are the defined standards.
A video file on a computer can be just about any resolution you define, and can be recorded anamorphicly (like how ntsc resolution 72 hex 480i, while physically 1.5:1, can contain either 1.33:1, 16:9, or 2.25:1 video).
There is a debate between whether 720p or 1080i results in a better image, as they contain roughly equal amounts of data. 720p is generally better for fast motion, 1080i is better for slow motion. 1080p is always best as long as you have sufficient bandwidth, why cable & satellite stations are usually 1080i while Blu-ray is usually 1080p.
The difference between "i" and "p" is how much of the frame is encoded. "P"rogressive encodes everything, the full 192 hex 1080 frame. "I"nterlaced encodes half the frame and throws out the other half. In 1080i, each frame is physically reduced to 192 hex 560. The first frame contains all the odd numbered vertical lines, the next frame contains the even numbered vertical lines, and so forth.
If you play back a dvd (almost all are 480i) on a computer and your computer software contains a poor deinterlacing method, you will easily see that with each successive frame only half the picture moves at a time.
720p LCD screens are usually manufactured at 128 hex 768 primarily to be more compatible with computer standards. The incoming video is still 128 hex 720 and the lcd screen uses what's called "overscan" and you do not have 1:1 pixel mapping. In other words, the screen is stretching the image, and the video is actually expanded beyond the physical dimensions of the screen. The incoming signal may be 128 hex 720, but what you *really* see is that 128 hex 720 video cropped to about 120 hex 700 then stretched to 128 hex 768.
Lots of numbers.
Just skip over the details and enjoy the HD video.

^ Thanks just_me.
Most of the articles I've read over the past two or three days about this stuff focus on who should buy 1080p vs who will be fine with 1080i or 720p. That's useful knowledge of course, but I'm a numbers kinda guy, so even though I'm a newb, I was still interested in some of the actual technological differences.
The info you've provided (and the earlier help from Wraith and dread) are all the kind of thing I was looking for. What do the numbers mean?
Now I feel that while I'm still a newb, I do have a basic yet sound understanding of what's going on in these different standards of HD.

OK back to porn then. What does one suppose might be the difference in price of production for a company releasing their scenes in 16:9 versus 4:3? Or 720p vs 1080i vs 1080P? etc?
Because I imagine that while some companies might do it for artistic reasons or something, the majority would make these decisions based on cost of encoding, storing data, etc vs how much they perceive the higher resolutions to be needed.

Most people passionately *hate* black bars along the sides of the video.
So I'd say most porn producers frame their video to what they believe the majority of their audience has for a computer monitor or tv screen. Bandwidth is cheap, so resolution and bit-rate is just a trade-off between what most people are willing to wait for a download. Personally I'll take the highest quality possible, even if it takes a while to download. I once had a subscription to a site that had 1080p video, and for a typical scene was 2gb, on my connection was an 8 hour download!

I think that the same argument can be made with regard to people who pay for memberships on porn websites. I'd be willing to bet that the average member of a pay porn site has better equipment than the average person who frequents a few forums on a regular basis.

I think its sad that they dont do more customer services for their clients and release the scenes in widescreen aswell and of course in 720p which is a great porn format.

There's also the issue that many web companies do not shoot in HD so 4:3 is their only option.

Come on cant be that many companies still shooting on DV? Even consumers cameras for privtae persons are really cheap with HD-resolution. That feels really awkvard if its so. Everyone doing internet porn should get that D90 camera that is really good with HD-video.

I was recently looking around the various website analysis trackers that are out there, get a rough idea how the porn industry is doing, what's popular & what's not.
The trend is unmistakable, cheap content is *huge*, and the sites that strive for high-quality are those who are struggling for subscribers. :(
Realitykings, muffia, bangbros, brazzers put out cheap low resolution videos because that is what sells. You can see other sites when they upgraded to 720p, for some reason their site ranks, page views, visits often nosedive.

Doesn't that have more to do with their content and their prices?
I think bangbros and brazzers stuff would look great in 720p the pricing must also be lower when offering these hd clips. My predjudice about these sites are that they probably overprice their sites with the argument that hd is better. However, with todays technology that shouldn't mean its more expensive.

I don't know the answer to what the best price / quality / quantity ratio is, I just know that just about every porn website has been dying a slow death since the summer of 2007. Most people are quick to blame filesharing, but the summer of 2007 was the birth of Brazzers and the takeoff of Realitykings. Take a look at some of the site analysis tools out there. Brazzers and Realitykings are each visited by an estimated 40 million people on a monthly basis. Some of the other sites mentioned in this thread, New Sensations is sitting at an estimated 500k per month, Pink Visual at 50k per month. To note these are estimated visitors, not necessarily paying subscribers (although it appears to me, between 1 in 100 and 1 in 1,000 visitors is the rough conversion to the number of paying subscribers). Anyways, the point is the disparity is what is mind-boggling!
For these two sites to pull upwards of 100k paying subscribers away from other websites, it eats away at everyone else, and the other sites focusing on quality doesn't seem to be having much of a significant impact.
Of course I could be completely wrong in my analysis, I welcome anyone else's opinions on the subject.

Interesting figures. I still think that the success for realitykings, bangbros, brazzers etc. is mostly because of their content not poor resolution on their updates.

There is some truth to that. We started offering steaming 720p trailers on our website and the rate of conversions actually dropped. I'm assuming this is because some peoples still aren't on fast enough connections to watch them without buffering and as soon as the picture locks up, they're off to another site. Now we just offer them for download. It's a drag because when I see a well shot clip in full 720 or 1080p on my laptop, I can't imagine wanting to watch the crap on tube sites but apparently the attention span of the average porn viewer is shorter than I thought.

That's not exactly right either Mike. Shooting in 16X9 (Widescreen) and shooting in HD are different things.
Most digital camcorders, including lower priced consumer camera's are capable of shooting Anamorphic
Widescreen. In 2003, I was shooting with a Sony Digital 8 Handicam that shot in Anamorphic Widescreen.
The Panasonic DVX100, a very, VERY popular SD (standard definition) camera, as well as the Canon XL1 and GL1
both are capable of shooting in Anamorphic Widescreen, and porn guys have been shooting on those camera's
since they first came out.
Shooting in 4:3, or 'Full Screen' hasn't been the only option for web producers since the late 90's.

I'm aware of that. I have used all of those cameras at various times over the years. I was speaking specifically of a very big web company that I know for a fact, specifically instructs their directors to shoot in DV 4:3. They can't be the only one.

I'm not sure if that would be true. I'm no expert, but i'd be interested to see someone with waaay more time and money than me look into it. i'm probably putting too much thought into it. i live with it by saying that i really WOULD read playboy for the articles. then i feel dumb.
The thing i'm thinking is about how integrated your computer is to your life.
The difference between porn and mainstream computer things. if you go to a 'forum about porn', on some level that means you are using your computer as a source for information, where if you go to a 'site selling porn', you're using your computer as a source for porn. that puts it in an entirely different class. things for porn are always treated differently.
think of the difference between someone who uses a cell phone for having a flat tire, versus someone who uses a cell phone for the free nights and weekends. which one would own a touchscreen blackberry, and which would use an old motorola flip? it's not the relative importance, or the cost of what you do, it's just a different way of thinking about it.
or think of the other stuff you do for porn, or well, at least i do. blockbuster has much better selection for mainstream movies, but before the computer, i relied on some small store with a big back room for porn. who spent more for their tvs, the one with a good home theater setup for the matrix and terminator 2, or the guy who rents porn from the back room?
much like when i was watching old vhs stuff stashed under my bed, and why i don't own $200 headphones for my jazz, as long as i like what i'm watching, it's not gonna make me spend money on a nicer thing to watch it on. but gamers, nerds, and people with business-based tech needs have no choice.

I'd also highly doubt that the average subscriber at one of the "major" sites has a particularly good setup, simply based on the level of discourse found on those sites that (for reasons still unfathomable to me) allow scene comments to be posted, and especially when there are technical problems with an update. There just don't seem to be all that many people who are especially techie-minded, and so I doubt that many have state of the art machines either.
Watching significant amounts of web porn might still have required a bit of technological sophistication five or six years ago, but not these days.

Based on the number of homes I've visited where people elect to watch a stretched-out 4:3 image on their 16:9 TVs because "it fills the whole screen," I'd say a large number of consumers still lack solid education as to general image quality options anyway. I think when the populace becomes better informed about these matters is when there will be more pressure on content providers to craft these things a little better.

Well if a majority of the screens are 16:9 shouldn't the material be framed that way then?
In Sweden hardly anyone has computer screens that are full frame anymore. I dont know how it is in the rest of the world.
I can understand that internet companies might think their customers think it takes to long to download 720p updates but they could at least release their updates that are in Standard Defintion in 16:9 format.
For instance inthevip would really benefit from the wider screen at the party sequences.

Absolutely, but most television channels are still SD and output a 4:3 image. Even an HD channel will display in 4:3 if that is how the original programming originated (old sitcoms, television dramas etc.). It's true that most people use the stretch or zoom feature on their 16:9 televisions to "fill the whole screen" even thought it looks like shit. These are the same people who hated letterboxed versions of movies because they felt that they were missing some of the image when in fact that they were getting the entire image as opposed to the pan and scan version.

I gotta give Bangbros some credits. Just watched Amia Morettis scene on Monsters of Cock and its released in 72 hex 406 pixels resolution. The image quality was not super but its a fall forward. Was some time ago I was a member on realitykings so I dont know what resolution theyuse nowadays.
