I'm someone that still goes to my local porn shop, checks out box covers, and buys DVDs. So, do most people think that the internet will replace DVDs in porn? Is this the way the trend is going?

Afraid so, mate. IMHO, too many otherwise successful and prolific filmmakers have been screwed and abandoned by the existing video distribution apparatus that is controlled with an iron fist by a limited number of names/companies that you can count on your available digits. It will take a bit of time to get used to not physically grasping retail DVD media once a week, but in the interim, marketing paradigms will become more efficient (directly targeting the end user), the quality of video delivered over the internet will increase substantially (up to full resolution HD), and there will definitely be options that allow you to burn downloaded scenes to DVD-R or other optical media, if that is your viewing preference.

Remember, there were naysayers dead set against DVD replacing VHS cassettes once upon a time. We all know how THAT battle turned out!

52% of Americans have high speed connections, of those that are connected. So it won't be soon.
The trend is for directors to own their own lines, which is why there are so many porn companies out there - certainly you have a major birth defect if you have enough fingers to count them all.

But the internet has replaced a lot of brick and mortar locations as points of purchase. Shipping costs are so low (historically speaking) that many locations have gone under.

In the long run it will replace DVDs, but not soon.

Maybe eventually, but like MP3 doesn't replace CDs because of lower quality I'm afraid it's the same for downloads vs DVDs, I will only consider downloads if I can get the same quality as a very good DVD.

I don't think that the internet market will replace DVD sales in the future. I think that most people who buy DVDs these days get as much a thrill out of choosing the DVDs they wish to buy (be it shopping in a store, from internet site etc) as they do from watching the DVD. The anticipation as to what it will be like is always a great feeling. It's the same for cds, most people would rather buy a cd than download mp3's unless they are getting it for free.

And there's another problem, if the DVD market was to disappear completely, you would find most people going to area of the web where they can download porn for free, be it legal or otherwise.. there probably a great amount of places where you can do this on the net, and I have friends who say to me "why buy porn when you can download it for free" and it would just build up momentum if DVD product dwindled.

I don't think it is fair to compare DVD/download to DVD/vhs. When porn transferred to DVD, a whole range of new features became available, such as chapter menus, bonus scenes, being able to skip through the scene (a feature which may have intentionally developed with the porn market in mind, where else would anyone use it), trailers, behind the scenes footage and all with a better picture quality, than VHS. To me downloading is bringing you back to the VHS standards, although the picture quality isn't as bad, it is not DVD quality, its not as if you would have the nice presentation and features of a DVD.

Then you also have the fact that with DVDs you will never lose your porn collection as a result of a virus, or computer getting old and needing replaced, limitations in hard drive space etc. Sometimes there is a joy to look through DVDs you may have bought a while back and watch them again, and it feels like your watching a new film again!! Looking through the various box covers and seeing a scene you really love watching and getting the DVD player revved up for action.. and not having to watch porn on a small 17" tft screen.

I think a lot of people will eventually move on to HD-DVD or blu-ray which will have enhanced features, better picture quality and possibly even longer films (I don't think there will be any problem fitting a 5 hour Jake Malone film on to either these formats as a single disk. I think it will take a long time for either format to become the mainstream, but feel this is where the real future of adult entertainment lies.

Regards,

Lee

I think physical media like CDs and DVDs are singing the last verse. I definitely see network distributed media replacing it. Quality is a worry, but as network speeds increase and compression routines improve, I think it's a relatively minor setback. In 5 years or so, network distributed media will on average probably equal the quality found on todays physical media. And from there it will only continue improving.

Not completely, but in a big way. Internet porn is generally easier and more private. People will always like that glossy finish though.
They can get this thrill also with browsing sites and picking what to download, just usually with a lot more content available for the price and not having to wait for it to be shipped.
I think this depends entirely on the pricing model and rights to use it.
Many people yes, they already do, but it wouldn't be as bad as you think. Subscribing to a porn site has an important one up on anything free; convenience and updates. If you subscribe you save a lot of hastle and have easy access to newly added scenes. It really depends on the site though. Like anything else it's a question of quality. I have come across a few that simply couldn't be replaced with free porn, legal or otherwise.
the momentum is here now, most people look at porn on the internet. You see doom but I see opportunity. Your friends who ask why probably haven't signed up to a quality porn site yet. When they do I'd like to see them go back to scraps of free porn. Potential customers are what they are
The quality is up to par but it depends on the website. Some sites I have subscribe to are perfect DVD quality. I can burn it to a DVDR and watch it on my TV. The burning software adds chapters and scene menu, I just add the scenes I downloaded, BTS if I want to. None of it is missing. The main difference right now is that it takes some minimal technical know-how and software like nero to do this, which spells effort not convenience. Of coarse people can always just watch it on their monitor that has better quality than a standard TV but right now this is an advantage of buying DVD.
But you could lose it from a scratch to the disc. External hard drives are getting very cheap these days, you can always back up your porn collection, or burn them to DVDRs and put them in cases same as normal DVDs. When I upgrade or buy a new computer I don't lose my data, I transfer it.
With blu ray or HD-DVD will come burnable media of the same type. Your computer will have a drive for these just like it had a CD drive and then DVD drive. As these new formats phase in so will the computer drives. Multi-layer HD discs, that's a ton more space to backup your downloaded porn to.

What it really comes down to is that the DVDs you buy have data on them. Whether you get that data on a DVD or download it it's still the same data.

The privacy thing is for some reason very important to porn consumers... oooh no!... someone may find out I'm a pervert! Well... now the FBI will store your IP and the title of every single porn flick you stream...

I'll stick to DVDs as long as possible, I hate internet porn, it's even harder to find the good stuff now that it's even less exspensive to produce porn... and people seem to actually LIKE some of the worst stuff out there.

I think we're looking at a future where the only DVD-producing gonzo company is Evil Angel.

I've always gone the internet route. Cheaper to buy DVDs than the marked up prices in shops, and discreet. No one has to know I'm a perv, unless they already know. Plus with websites with lots of content, it's easier to download high quality vids of everything and anything. Fisting websites, fisting, lesbian sites, enema sites, she-male sites that make most vids released look like crap. The sites that get the exclusive girls. Stuff like that. With high speed internet, downloading is nothing really, and the variety is far better, and more extreme than can be allowed on DVD in the US. A month membership at some top sites is about the price of a DVD in a porn shop, so...

I think there are different kinds of privacy. Yes, you won't be on a security video if you buy from the internet. But then, your credit card #, name and address won't be passed around if you go into a physical store and pay cash.

Paying cash in a physical store, there's no chance of your family finding "$21.95 blacksandblondes.com, inc" on a credit card bill. There's no chance of getting junk mail. There's no chance of getting spam. There's the privacy threat of a stranger finding out, which can happen if you shop in a physical store. Then there's the privacy threat of your family finding out, which is very likely to happen if you create a paper trail by buying things online. Some people care less about seeing someone they know in a pornshop (which makes them also guilty) than my mom or wife or grandmom getting to the mail before I do one day and opening up "Anabolic Cumshots 10".

The move from DVD to internet is also different than the move from VHS to DVD. Moving to DVD from VHS costs only $50 for a new DVD player. If you don't have a computer at home, which a LOT of people don't, then to go from DVD to internet porn will cost $1000. Then when you get the computer, you're stuck with Windows Media Player, which is nowhere near as easy to use as a DVD player. WMP also has less features than even the cheapest DVD player. Sure there's better programs, but how do you know that if you just bought your first home computer?

I am well-versed in both net porn and DVD. I prefer DVD's quality but the internet's prices. I don't like how long it takes to download porn. I don't like how much space porn takes up. I don't like that even though my computer is only a few years old, it regularly has problems playing video. My DVD players are older than my computer but they almost never have problems. Plus my TV screen is much bigger than any monitor would be.

DVD wins. Computers still kinda suck when it comes to playing music and movies.

Other people open your mail BustdownGal? Damn.

I never had that problem, somethings addressed to me, it goes to me. Even when I was 9, something had my name, even if it were a credit card trying to sign me up, I was given the unopen letter, which I would then shread.

Plus, my mom knows I have an extensive collection of porn, she would rather I didn't, but she doesn't snoop, nor does she really care what I have. She really the only person who could intercept my mail, but why? She knows what I got.

Hell, my brothers friend wanted some advice on porn, my bro told him to ask me, he came over, I had all my binders open and told him to pick and I would tell him if he would like it. My mom laughed because this guy, in his 30's was turning red in the face at the quantity of porn I had. I was calm as could be, his mind was blown, but it was no big deal to me really. I just would rather not be too well known in porn shops because I like being anonymous for the most part. Don't need to spend $48 on a DVD at a porn shop, that I can order online for $10 is all.

When you love the extreme stuff, like fisting and piss drinking, the only real place you have access to that is online. Considering that I am in bible belt country and not many US studios will produce that stuff, it's easy to order online and enjoy. Hell, even double anal is tame to me, because once you've seen triple anal fisitng, there really is no going back.

Hi everyone.

Really interesting conversation!

In my opinion: no, Internet won't make all porn shops disappear. I don't share BustdownGal's views either tho. I think in 10 years your DVD player and HD box, my desktop PC and your kid's PlayStation will be in the same machine, the heart of your home theater system, and it will also be connected to the Internet, so I think these two things will merge but I don't think either will disappear.

The problem with Internet porn today is not privacy but PIRACY. (just a note here to the privacy issues: your wife will find your porn DVD collection much sooner than she could hack your Pay-Pal account) There's a huge potential in online distribution (especially low costs), but until they start to do something against piracy issues and make it easier to download (and even burn) movies, onlie the techies will get their porn online, and they will probably steal it. I like the changes that happened in the music industry lately - piracy still exists, but I can buy a whole album for less then a buck, download it with two clicks, burn it with another and even print the box art out if I want. Almost the same quality for less money, and didn't even have to drive to the shop. Aand, it's the easier and cheaper way if say I want to put music on my iPod.

That's what I would like to see in porn too then maybe I'd start buying my porn online.

At least for Europe, I dont think that Internet porn will replace DVDs/VHS etc.

At the contrary, in the last two years, I never met so many collectors, that were collecting old movie formats, like
Beta, V2000 ( a dutch-german Video format, better than VHS ), Super8.
Downloading porn via internet is very unpersonal,
you need a new and expensive computer ( I still have an old Pentium II dinosaur ).
I want to talk with the staff a little bit or browse through the covers. I think all of these platforms
( internet, videostore, sexshop, convention etc.) will exist in the future. But many video rental stores and sexshop will have to close, if they dont improve their service and inventory.

I don't really see how DVD can sustain itself as a porn option, given the escalating rates for talent vs. the diminishing returns for everything else ... If you know what youre doing the INternet seems much easier and less cost-intensive ... And your cash comes more or less direct from the customer, no distribs to deal with, no shipping costs, no boxcover dupes, no warehouse, no receptionist ... Some companies that get the real $$$ (like Evil) and have a lock on the top names are going to last longer, as are hyper-capitalized outfits like Zero Tolerance, Anabolic, Red Light, etc. ... seemingly even if they give away product. (Not Anabolic/Diablic although it's hard to imagine them selling like they used to ... maybe the new slate of directors will improve the product).

I don't think the Internet-only content is improving porn. In fact, I think that it will kill porn as DVD-fans have come to enjoy it ... esp. the kind of porn that involves production values or an active thinking process... like the locations and costumes and scenarios you see in Jake Malone or Manuel Ferrara's movies ... Wicked will always have a market, though ... I have high hopes for Nasty.com, proving that quality no-frills all-sex Internet porn can be done with honesty and intensity without resorting to stupid gimmicks. And I don't think Jules Jordan will be going anywhere, regardless if the rest of his competitors fall to the wolves ... but it's all going to change very radically and very soon.

I have only watched about 2/3 of the porn DVDs that I own. I buy some just because I feel the need to own them, although I haven't gotten around to watching them. I don't think that will change for me. Owning porn is comforting. It's like a new pair of boots that I never have an occasion to wear.

Oh, yeah ... I prefer DVDs, and suspect that if it ever goes to mostly Internet, I'll probably stop watching porn. I like kicking back on the couch, and really look foward to getting a 50-inch screen so I can watch the squirt gush right into the living room rug. (Like in "The Ring" when the ghost girl comes stepping out dragging slime with her ... lol).

Internet clips are fine for a quick whack -- I dare say, they are ideal for Brandon's 50-to-1 style BJ scenes, which are only 7 minutes a piece and download fast -- but jesus god in heaven i hate trying to sit at a computer and masturbate. the only thing that works well is watching POV on your laptop, because when you put the laptop on your belly it's almost the exact "cut-and-paste" with the surrogate stunt cock.

There are quick and simple programs that will convert video to DVD compliant format. Or DivX DVD players that will play DivX and most XviD, along with most .avi files.

So I have no problem with downloaded porn and viewing on my big screen (I'll miss that fucker when I move).

Unpersonal...the LP crowd said that about CDs as well, and the Laserdisc crowd said it about DVDs. Wait until the next generation grows up, those who now are teens were raised on the internet, when they take over the market, I think it will change.

I don't know of any LD fans complaining about DVDs.

And I think LPs fostered their own unique culture that is, in fact, going to outlive the CD as the latter is replaced by digital files. I don't think we'll see DVDs going away anytime soon, because the VHS is only finally going away as a consumer product. However, I'm looking forward to archiving all my digital music on a 1 TB hard drive one day, and running a line into the hi-fi ... I'll always keep certain CDs because of their collectible status or their packaging, but I tell ya the whole clutter aspect is something easy to live without ... I can see how porno is so much more efficiently served via cyberspace ... I basically keep a dresser drawer for the porn and once it fills up, I have to get rid of a few. The regular DVD stash is growing steadily as it is ...

I agree with skronker, but I don't think I could give up watching porn.

I personally like to watch DVDs on a big screen, I also don't enjoy sitting at the computer to jerk off.

I guess if the internet becomes dominant, I'll have to get the burning software required to transfer the content to DVDs.

I know a couple of LD-fans who are still collecting, although I think it has much to do with the packaging. The LP will definitely survive as an underground format or "subculture" in music, it may well be that the DVD and CD will have the same fate, but for mass market purposes I think networked distribution will eventually take over.

The excellent Slim Devices Squeezebox will meet all your music desires, for porn and other video I dunno, it's in the future, but the HTPC-trend is catching on.

You can author your own DVDs. If you look at DVD sites like videobox, you can download the DVD quality and use burning software to make DVDs that play on your TV. The data and visual aspects of a DVD can be duplicated completely with download + burning. You can even mix your favorite scenes. From there it's just sitting back, relaxing and picking from tons of scenes for a much better price.

It will be a sad day for me should this change happen - I love getting my rental DVDs. But by the time internet and porn have merged, I'd assume that my TV has merged along side in that I'll be watching downloaded/streaming porn directly in my living room.

That's a presupposition. You can already today put your PC in something like this, slide it in under your TV rack and use remote controlled Freevo to browse your video collection on your big screen TV. In the future it will only get better and smaller and more practical, the PC and the TV will merge.

You are already talking with a Laserdisc fan complaining
about DVDs. I especially like the big covers, the picture quality ( some LDs still are better than DVDs ), there arent
hours of additional material, but only the most important.
There are no reginal codings and no copy problems.
Negative point is the high price.
And there is very few porn on LD.

I dont like downloads, because I want to have a cover and a box.
A download is nearly worthless to me.

I think internet porn can only go downhill if sites will start to use DRM. I mean there are already plenty of sites where you can't download porn and watch it when you're not a member anymore either because or DRM or because their content is streaming only. For me I want to be proud when I look at my shelves and see all those DVD's there. I guess that's the difference between collectors and people who just want to look at porn.

Well, I was a collector of DVDs, but you know what, having DVD boxcovers so prominently displayed kinda sucked. If people come over, with all the DVDs I have/had, I'd have porn everywhere. Porn is great, but I don't need it to be my life.

That's why I went with binders, but even they are full to the max with porn.

I don't want my mom to see all my porn, she's very anti. So I use CaseLogic, also it makes me find certain titles much much faster. So it doesn't have to be a space issue. My harddrive is always nearly full from downloaded movies and it's kind of stressing me out.

I guess people who come over actually seem excited because they can usually leave my house WITH porn DVDs ... haha ... I don't really care. I mean, all the media is shelved and stored, but there;s always a few things by the TV.

I love my laserdiscs. And my 400 LPs. And my grimy new wave mix tapes from '86. I love my CRITERION DVDs the best, and my weird music box sets, and all the crap stacked up ... but I';m glad digital storage is an option so I can keep all the old stuff ...

This whole "burning software" and "download to burn" concept is beyond me. Just about every single new DVD player will accept Windows Media (WMV) files.

Using any CD/DVD burn program, you can copy any of our WMV files to recordable media and play on your DVD player. There's no fancy software or anything else needed.

Beware of industry catch phrases. It's mostly bullshit to trick you.

Um, I am not so sure my DVD player will play wmv files, if it does, I'll be downloading even more for americanvice.com. But my DVD player will play avi/DivX (including most XviD files, depending on packed bitstream audio, and it play straight mpeg2, mpeg1, vcd, svcd, but no mention of wmv).

Since it's a Philips DVD player, it may just play wmv, will give it a try, got plenty of blank discs lying around.

I dont display my collection openly, but I have
a big Kasha and some smaller Seventeen posters on my wall.
( But all arent explicit. )
But men who first visited me at home, were really confused.
Asking me, if my brother is still living with me.
Girls never asked.

Of course I had no problems having hardcore posters on the wall, but I dont want to confront people with porn who dont want it.

I've got a two year old LG DVD player with HDMI out. It's a decent machine. On the front, it proudly displays the logos of all the formats it accepts. WMV is one of them. I've been watching tons of mainstream content in this fashion.

I belive one of my DVD-players actually do play wmv. I've been watching Evil Angel trailers this way.

And Mike, I miss your previous avatar, it was one of the funniest ever.

At my old house, I had a beefy PC in my office with a SRX wireless network. I located a cheap PC in my living room and ran a VGA monitor cable to my plasma.

I then streamed all kinds of content from the office PC down to the living room PC. With a $500 solution, I had a kickass wireless media center.

That would be kick ass in about 2 to 5 years when I get my own place. I do not have quite enough to buy my own house yet, so...

But by the time I do, technology will have likely changed to make everything more easy.

So...my point stands. Switching to internet porn is too expensive and too much of a hassle to overtake easy old DVD anytime soon.

Great post. My laptop got a tvscreen exit slot and I can watch my Divx in the plasma, so this is not so far. I think, too, that internet future, like it or not, would be in the internet. There are some young fans that didn't know what go into a store is!

Dude believe me ,that big thing in your moms nightstand isnt a back messager! she jacking off to all your porn! and if your so worried, first get a job to make some ducketts than move into an apartment and then your mom cannot see your collection of porn and she will have to go out and buy more porn to have a reason to use her back messager : )

I do have my own apartment, but I started organizing my discs this way before that. And it's unnecessary to have porn on display in case someone is offended by it, just like I think the hype around Saw 3 led to people that shouldn't go went see it.

One thing you guys seemed to forget to mention is that many paysites nowadays already offer hd downloads and some of them already look better than most dvds. Although most of it is not "real" hd and doesn't look nowhere near as good as a blu-ray or hd-dvd it's still better than most dvds and can be watched easily on big screens. It all depends on the pace in which download speeds are increasing and finally there won't be anymore optical media to buy even though many people won't like it because they want to have something which they can hold in their hands they will have to adapt eventually.
Someone mentioned todays kids growing up on the internet and that will also play a big role I think I bet most of them don't even own CDs anymore and just download mp3s instead. Times are changing and they are not changing in favour of optical media. Personally I don't care that much as it is all just bits and bytes whatever format it is.
