In some cases here people are mixing apples and oranges. Some companies like Brazzers offer internet content then release some of their older content on DVD to get value out of that old content. However some companies like Kink.com will probably NEVER offer their content on DVD and remain internet only, not just for financial reasons but legal reasons (i.e. they are immune to obscentity charges like some conservative states hit people like Stagliano, Jeff Mike, and of course Max Hardcore). Some people still purchase DVDs but I think a lot of guys are renting DVDs now instead of buying. Let's face it they can easily rip copies of the DVDs and either make DVD copies or store the rips on hard drive and playback just like internet video files. Digital media players can even playback DVD with menu navigation like just DVD player. Of course Blu-ray rips would require ton of disk space. I think eventually DVD disc will be phased out but it will probably take another 8-10yrs. Hell VHS is still alive!!! It takes a while to kill off popular media format especially if you don't have an easier to use and cheaper media to replace it. For most people using a digital media player is too challenging compared to just popping a disc into a DVD player. Streaming video is being pushed as that solution but I don't see people paying same amount of money and not being able to own a copy without DRM. Not to mention ISP's putting limits on bandwidth. Also remember porn guys tried streaming already and ended up going with the download model instead. I still prefer to rent DVDs but I also have a digital media player for internet files. But I mostly rent because I don't like paying monthly subscription fees. I may go a few weeks or couple months and not rent or download any new content. So I prefer the pay-as-you-go or weekly rental model. The cost to rent few movies for a week is maybe same it would cost for maybe a month's access to a site but with the latter you are limited to just to the content on that site where with rentals you can pick and choose different genres etc. I spent a year ripping my old DVD collection to hard drive because storing disc takes up too much space and disc get damaged or degrade over time. With hard drive rips you can make backups and if you are worried about who might see your collection you'd have to read the drive compared to looking at a disc. You could even encrypt your hard drive if you are really worried. I used to make loop tapes on VHS long time ago. Now I'm looking for a way to do it with digital media directly. One of these days I'm going to download Handbrake software and start using that. Sometimes it better to store clips instead of entire DVDs especially when movie only has couple good scenes.
Which movies are you talking about? I just scrolled through the new releases at Gamelink and nearly everything that's available as Download to Own is cheaper than as a DVD, in most cases significantly so. The only movies where the DVD is cheaper are some Vouyer Media 4-hour tapes for who knows what reason. If it's different for older movies, then that's obviously because the DVD prices have dropped due to a need to clear old inventory, a need that doesn't exist with the downloadable versions.
I still buy DVDs but subscribing to VIDEOBOX has been a fantastic experience for me. I'm going through a phase of buying DVDs now because of a few new stars I like watching because VIDEOBOX doesn't offer the newest releases but because of VIDEOBOX I'm seeing tons and tons of great stuff I would've never seen otherwise. Being able to sample so many studios and performers I didn't know about is beyond great. I'm one of those people who doesn't like watching any kind of long form content on my computer. So I bought a ROKU and stream VIDEOBOX to my big screen tv. I'm able to make my own custom vids because I have a DVD recorder so I'm not taking up computer space. Except for older movies from the early 80s and before the quality of the picture is the same as DVDs. Even though I still buy DVDs from time to time the big draw back is I was buying so many DVDs just to see perhaps 1 or 2 performers and kinda ignored the rest of the cast. Even though DVDs are fairly cheap these days it still sucks to pay 20 or so to just watch the 1 or 2 girls you really want to see. It also sucks that sometimes the scenes aren't as good as I'd hoped and I end up sorry I even bought it. This isn't an issue with VIDEOBOX. I have access to so many girls and scenes I just watch the ones I like best. I've also tried the SCORE streaming channel and again there were great movies I've always wanted to see and I was able to record them. The problem with the SCORE channel is that they just don't offer that much content I want to watch. If HOTMOVIES streamed through ROKU there's stuff I'd buy from them because they have so much stuff that's unavailable on DVDs. They might be a bit pricy but it's still cheaper than buying a hard to find DVD that you may only want for one scene.
OK I visited Gamelink.com, and yes their pricing structure does have around $5 difference between download-to-own and DVD. So you are correct; Gamelink download-to-own is cheaper than Gamelink DVD of the same title. That said, they have 2 types of download-to-own. WMV downloads (39958 available products) - has DRM, limited to 1 computer, cannot play on a different PC or on a standalone DVD player or on a Digital Media Player. As stated in a prior post, DRM doesn't count as download-to-own, in my book. HD Downloads (98 available products) - no DRM, no restrictions. The small number of available products might be because they are all Blu-ray titles, which are less prevalent than DVD.
Not in America they don't. You will never find those DVDs that your company sell, Jacco, being sold from the American retailers. And it's for the reasons stated from the poster above. Just to clarify. Yes Kink.com content is sold on DVD by euro companies which can ship to US. A subscription is like $35 per month.
