Google has really gone downhill though. I get so many link directory sites and pdf files in my searches. Frusturating - especially the generic link directory sites. I wish there were a better option, like the old Google.
Yahoo is good for names, it bought alltheweb.com,altavist.com and inktomi.com. In a test reported in Australian Netguide, they wrote that you'll get 50% more pages for names with Yahoo that you will for Google. Sometimes worth using more than one search engine.
Sometimes it is very useful to use a web search helper. One that I like to use is called Copernic Agent. It searchs through dozens of web search engines and then presents the results in a logical way.
for the mozilla-based browsers, just go to http://mycroft.mozdev.org/ and figure out a couple of dozen more specialized engines(e.g. resellerratings for shopping, imdb for movies, etc)based on what your job or interest is likely to use. 20 specialized engines from one searchbar usually ends up wildly more accurate than google, which is primarily a listing of who bought the most traffic, or so it seems. it works for lots of academic and finanacial references too, where google is garbage as a divining rod for what you're looking for. there's hundreds of plugins to choose from---including the regulars like lycos, google, altavista, excite, webcrawler, askjeeves so you won't lose access to a normal search engine.
I used to use Alltheweb for a very long time, before Yahoo bought them, and replaced Fast index with their own, sucking index. I now use Google, but never liked it much.
