I've posted some stuff about this subject before. I've suffered from Irish Customs before and a friend of mine was "reamed" by them over some (fairly standard) titles he imported. Try the posts here, here and here.

I've listed my experiences and trials & tribulations in these other posts, so I'm not going to repeat myself. Just to let you know though that since I've been importing for a few years now, that Irish Customs have only been getting tougher for the last year or two and really squeezing in in the las tyear or so. All you can do is try, but be more careful, is my advice.

Strangely enough, I've already received a replacement copy of it from their Holland warehouse, although that was sent by registered post.

Oh well, I suppose after about 2 years of getting dvd's via the post it was inevitible (spelling?) that something would get caught someday. Hmm, wonder will my address be getting watched from now on?

Anyway, I would recommend that you either lay low for a while OR have your stuff sent to another name and/or address. Then again, nothing else may happen. However, my mate also got a phone call from a customs inspector, wanting him to come in for a "chat", as he called it, concerning his confiscated order. Also, I don't want to worry you too much on this concern, because my mate doesn't normally take shit from anyone and "pulled" the inspector who contacted him up on every point he made in the phone conversation and validly argued each point he tried to make -- maybe that's why they targetted him more forcefully. Who knows? -- and then like a red rag to a bull, my mate wouldn't let this go, so he rang the Irish Film Censors (who customs have to send the stuff they seize, to, in order for it to be deemed "obscene/pornographic" -- how stupid is that???) to find out the exact state of affairs concerning Customs and the Censors and he did find out a couple of interesting items, such as Customs only send a fraction of what the seize to the Censors for classification, Sex Toys can be imported, legally (I think!) and other snippets of info that I can't remember at the moment.

The only thing I can say, really, is don't worry too much about it. Even if the stuff we import is "illegal", remember if you are contacted about it, remind them that there are sex shops in most of the major Irish cities OPENLY selling the same dvds. Are they going to do anything about that. Then ask them why the gardai aren't closing them down! Or that they are charging ridiculous money for the same titles that you or I may have imported.

Nothing may actually happen with you, at all! I've had two orders stopped in the past, but lately nothing of mine has been checked. But, who knows? I may be unlucky next time. Sorry for being long-winded in this reply, but I kinda had to put down my thoughts. And welcome to another Irish poster here at ADT!

Somewhere in the late 80's, or possibly early 90's, I ordered a tape from an ad in Mayfair and got instead... a very grubby, hard-to-read, photocopied customs letter telling me my title (something about schoolgirls, I think) had been confiscated.

Oh the horror!

I find it funny now, but at the time it scared the absolute crap out of me. I was still living at home and wondered what was coming next.

And what came next? Absolutely nothing.

Mind you, it wasn't until the late ninties that I set about ordering any tapes again. Again it was Mayfair that set me in the direction of a supplier.

For several years I was ordering VHS from a European company, who posted from England, and sent tapes made from DVDs. Blank tapes, but each tape had a handwritten label and since the titles were descriptive it wasn't going to be hard to figure out what they were if Customs opened them.

But they never did.

This year I switched to DVDs. I've dealt with two US companies, and received five orders (one via DHL, others through Fedex).

In the future though, I'll be trying different suppliers, and consequently I'm very interested in the experiences of others.

Just to update you, received a letter today from customs telling me that my "pornographic dvd" had been confiscated. Luckily, they sent it to my work address so that's one interesting conversation with my parents avoided.

Haven't ordered anything else since, and I don't think I will for a while. Have ordered non-porn dvd's in the interim without any problems though.

Let's just hope though that they don't contact you by phone looking for a "chat" regarding this confiscation. Keep us informed if anything else happens, and hopefully more luck in the future on the dvd ordering front...
