| Dan Senior Member 2056 Posts 6/07 | Before the 1960's, porn was more or less illegal in USA. But since then it has grown into a multi-billion-dollar industry. And this makes me wonder if the same turn-around is about to happen in China? The rise of the porn industry in USA coincided with rising marriage age for both men and women and with ever increasing divorce rate. There are millions of unattached men and women in USA nowadays who don't have any regular sex partners. And they are probably the main core who consume hardcore porn. China is also now getting ever increasing numbers of unattached men who don't have any regular sex partners. Due to China's one-child-policy, many parents there choose to have only male babies through sex-selective abortions and even female infanticide. And according to one article I've read, there are now 18 million more young men in China than women. And it's going to get worse. In a few years they are going to have 30 million more young men than women. 18 Million Eligible Bachelors in China One way or another these unattached men will need to be sexually satisfied, and regularly too. Or else they will make trouble for the government and for society there. Already prostitution is common there. And many private companies keep prostitutes on their payroll (or as independent contractors) in order to bribe various government officials with sexual favors. Here is what one recent news article said, "China has banned fire department officials from receiving sexual favours as bribes from companies seeking their business.... For every 10 corrupt officials, nine are involved in illicit sex." Sexual Favors Are Used As Bribes in China In 9 Out Of 10 Cases All this makes me wonder whether the Chinese government will adopt the US model of dealing with unatached adults and allow porn to flourish freely there? Only the future will show. But complete freedom for porn in China seems like an effective way to satisfy at least some of the unattached men there. China would be a huge market and a big opportunity for porn makers. Perhaps China is where the future of porn business is. Edited by - Dan on Nov 18 2007 [Link] |

| Dither Persona non grata I love America 650 Posts 8/05 | China has huge markets where legality is ambiguous. They say porn is sold in "everywhere", although it is technically illegal (probably pretty randomly enforced). And there's "millions" of websites.I agree. |

| Dan Senior Member 2056 Posts 6/07 | They will either have widespread prostitution, where many men will find satisfaction with few women. Or they can try to keep some order in their society and allow porn as an outlet for men who can't find mates for themselves. Prostitution is not going to go away in their society, even if they allow porn. But it probably won't get as bad as it will without any alternatives for the unattached men to choose from. A good example of what can happen in society when young men don't have any sexual outlet are some of the muslim countries where terrorism is a problem. These countries don't allow extramarital sex, prostitution, and porn. And many young men there cannot get married because they don't have the money to pay dowry for their brides. And some of these young men end up making a lot of trouble for everyone, not just in their countries but internationally as well. I don't think the Chinese government would want to deal with problems like that in their society. Not if they can find some way out of it, like legalizing porn for example. Porn is not easily available in developing countries like India and most African countries because the governments there strictly prohibit porn and punish anyone using it. Not so long ago I remember reading in the news that an Indian film actress has been charged with indecency by police because an American actor kissed her on the cheek in public. That's how strict they are there. Edited by - Dan on 11/19/2007 4:04:43 PM |

| Dan Senior Member 2056 Posts 6/07 | If there is so little demand for porn in China. Then why does the police there fight so hard to shut down internet porn sites that are popping up all over the place there? Here is an example of what I'm talking about: "Chinese police last week said they had arrested a 21-year-old student for running five pornographic websites with 210,000 registered users. Police also announced that they had closed 1,450 porn websites and deleted more than 30,000 obscene messages online since the launch of the campaign. Over a six-month period, the campaign by the MPS and nine other government departments will crack down on illegal online activities such as distributing pornographic materials and organizing cyber strip shows, and purge the web of sexually-explicit images, stories, and audio and video clips. http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/china/2007-05/03/content_865245.htm |

| Dan Senior Member 2056 Posts 6/07 | I suppose, it partly depends on their culture. Some countries like USA would rather have widespread porn than widespread prostitution. But other countries, such as Thailand, prohibit porn but allow complete freedom for prostitution. Perhaps China will end up being like Thailand in terms of sexual satisfaction for their unattached men. |

But I suspect the clients to be limited to western men for the most part.( It is all about the money for gvernment as well ) The willingness to excute thousands each year , is a good indicator that no law is considered to severe. I almost wonder if they would consider sexual reassignment surgery to adjust for the imbalance first. On the other hand they might consider mass producing porn to sell as an export only. |

| Dan Senior Member 2056 Posts 6/07 | If the government prohibits porn, then these men will seek satisfaction among prostitutes. And if the government jails the prostitutes and abolishes women from the streets, then perhaps many men will turn to gay sex with each other (as it often happens in some arab countries and in most Western jails). | ma meeshka Iconoclastic Member 3939 Posts 4/06 | it's not making me turn gay. well, not that much. and, yeah, men also like other men. lots of gay men buy porn. if gay porn is illegal, do they then turn straight? it's a neat theory, just doesn't really work. back to the drawing board. |

| liuwhores New Member 2 Posts 7/07 | In fact, adult films in China are very universal, almost every youngman (especially students) had seen pornographic VCDs. During college, we boys are gathered together to see adult films or any other film. I feel that, you really lack understanding on China. Edited by - liuwhores on 11/21/2007 6:19:12 AM |
| Dan Senior Member 2056 Posts 6/07 | Not so long ago, private businesses were completely illegal and prohibited by law in China. And now private businesses are not only legal but also a prominent part of society there. The same can happen with porn, because there is something to be gained by satisfying sexual passions of young men who cannot satisfy them in relationships with women. Problems with romantic relationships is one of the main reasons people give in their suicide notes, when they try to commit suicide. Here is what one author says: "And motives for suicide? Suicide notes make all too clear that romantic love once again tops the list.... .... the perception that a lover has forsaken them is the leading cause of fatal nighttime auto crashes among drunk-driving males." http://www.relationshipsandlove.com/Theres_love_and.htm In some arab countries, there are many young men who cannot find mates for themselves because of strict social prohibitions and lack of money for marriage. And some terrorist organizers take advantage of these men's romantic despair by befriending them and comforting them with a male-bonding type of experience that rejects women and the need for female company. And many of them eventually end up being terrorists. Similar kinds of things can happen in China too, if the government there doesn't watch it. Edited by - Dan on 11/21/2007 5:18:22 PM |

If anyone is an authority on this kind of thing, then he certainly is. Here is a description of his education and work experience: http://www.relationshipsandlove.com/FreeStuff/biopage.htm As for the legality of porn in Australia, my impression is that porn movies and porn magazines are perfectly legal and available in most of Australia. The only exceptions are places where the Australian Aborigenese live. The Australian government has made porn illegal only for the native population of Australia. And it probably has more to do with paternalism and racism than with anything else. It's not the first time Australian Aborigenese have been mistreated by the Australian government. For a long time these original inhabitants of Australia were not even considered Australian citizens, and their human rights were not recognized by any law there. The officials who control this will quickly find a way to make money on porn, and within a decade, porn will be everywhere in China. I have no idea whether Chinese people would rather see caucasians, blacks, hispanics, or asians portrayed, but my best guess is that there will be "different strokes for different folks", with the majority preferring chinese actors. |

| Dan Senior Member 2056 Posts 6/07 | If it's something you don't like. Then don't watch it. But don't impose your personal opinions on others. Perhaps being judgemental and dictatorial towards others is more of a stigma than making porn is. That's why the Chinese government has an image problem, when it comes to respect of human rights. |

It's the question of how much will they join us while beating us at our game. Maybe they'll look to the west for more and more ideas of what to buy and desire. And maybe when it comes to some things like porn there will be a stiff throbbing line drawn in the rice, and they will most decidedly not emulate our culture in those respects. It'll be interesting to see. |

In the long run, the Chinese government has nothing to gain from keeping porn illegal. But they might have something to loose, if they don't change the law. Some of their own Communist officials are probably heavily involved in either using porn or making money from it. |
| ninja1 Senior Member 2939 Posts 1/08 | I accept the inevitability of porn in China, one way or another. My post was about how American pornsters will not see the money, because of the piracy situation in China. I am addressing this part of your original post:

China is a member of the World Trade Organization. And eventually China will have to get serious about the piracy. Or else, they will end up paying some heavy penalties according to WTO rules. I agree that it doesn't look good now. But I'm talking about the future. And there are some good reasons to believe that the future in China will be different from the present.
