Lately I've been interested in entering porn. But everyone I've talked to ( including a man I know whp's involved in porn himself), has said it has a huge drug problem, and those ( like myself), usually have to start taking drugs in order to stay high to have sex in front of a camera crew day after day.
Is this generally true?

Drug use is a problem in our society. Why do you think companies’ drug test employees? And why they don’t follow up unless it becomes a problem that effects business.
If you need drugs to fuck on camera then stay out of porn.

no that is not true at all! people don't take drugs cause of the stress of being in front of a camera, they take them cause they get degraded daily for your viewing pleasure
and I as I have said before people who take drugs take drugs and people who don't don't

I don't know, personally. Porn isn't a very structured type of work environment. That tends to attract the kind of people who avoid structure, restrictions and such.
But it really shouldn't matter. I'm not sure why you think someone else being into drugs means you have to. If you don't want to, then don't.
But if you think you would need drugs to "endure" the business, then the business is probably not for you for the simple reason that you're looking at it as a chore that could barely be endured.
My theory is that most people hate their jobs. But if you're choosing, don't choose something you know you're going to hate.
Yes. An environment that you find unpleasant can drive you to many things....including drugs. That's just a reality and it isn't limited to porn.
If you want to avoid drugs, then I see no reason why you shouldn't be able to. If you're worried that you'll get into them just because everyone else is, why? It's easy enough to refuse.

Ladies & gentlemen;
Maybe the drug that this "insider" guy was referring to was Viagra?
If that's a problematic drug, then yeah, the porn industry is full of drugs.
But as for the usual substance abuse, has anyone considered that some actors may be feel-good junkies, and that's why they like to get high and fuck?

I'm sorry. I must have put that the wrong way. I didn't mean porn folk aren't human or anything like that. I just meant that people have different levels of tolerance and different reasons for doing what they do. Some people seem to be able to tolerate anything. And I have no idea whatsoever what reasons people who do porn are. I can assume that for many, it's money. And I do understand what you mean about people doing what they're qualified to do. Believe me, millions of people are stuck in a life and a job they hate and don't know what to do.
But I also have to assume that a profession like porn would naturally attract at least a few who truly want to do it. I honestly can't say that I can tell the difference anymore. I used to think I could but now I'm not so sure. But you know....there are a lot of jobs that are fully capable of making someone just want to off themselves at the end of the day. I've been there. Many, many times. And I've never been anywhere near a porn set.
I don't doubt that many in the business utterly hate it. I don't know a whole lot about what goes on behind the scenes but just from what I can see in front of the lens, I completely get what you mean. I don't think porn has to be the way it is, however. And please excuse my ignorance. I understand that people have to pay the bills somehow. But are you saying you hate the whole idea of porn or do you hate the way it is done? I guess what I'm asking is, would most of the girls be happier if porn didn't have people like Khan Tusion and others like him (Sorry. I'm drawing a blank right now on the names)? I don't think any of the girls in porn should ever feel like they have to work with or for someone they find unpleasant to work with. And every director and producer should make every effort to make the experience as painless as possible (under the circumstances). Alas, as I understand it, porn is still largely unregulated in a lot of ways. And wherever you have that, you have people who take advantage of it.
I think most things are better with some restraint and people who know the meaning of the word. I'm sorry if this post seems ill informed. I don't read the insider stuff like many of the people here probably do so there's probably a lot of stuff I don't know. I just watch a couple of movies every now and then and look at pics.

Perhaps the only drug you might want to use as a porn actor is the 'Viagra'.
If you can stay hard for the sexy lady, then why would you need to use any other drug?

As others have posted, alcohol and drug use are rampant in much of American/Western society. The "problem" is with "abuse" or over use. And cover stories in mainstream mags like Time and People try to find answers to why celebrities (Linds Lohan, Charlie Sheen, Brit Spears...pick almost any celeb) who should have everything, allow themselves to fall victim to the disease of substance abuse.
My guess is the World of Porn parallels the Celebrity World in that both afford the performers enough time off that the "partying" lifestyle becomes a 24/7 thing--not the once/twice-a-year-on-vacation thing when most of us 9-to-5ers binge on booze & drugs.
Plus female porn performers face a highly competitive workplace, with new girls coming into the biz almost daily. Work is shrinking, and more extreme/distasteful scenes are become required even on Feature production sets for Vivid, Wicked, and Digitial Playground. And "isolation" from family and friends because of her career choice can also be factored in.
All this adds up to "stress," time-to-indulge, and a culture of "friends" in the porn biz who will never tell a girl NOT to do something that may be harmful to her health. Her "friends" don't want to tell her how to live her life. (Gee, thanks!)
Bottom line: the list of girls who came into porn as occasional users but developed a "problem" with booze or drugs would include almost every performer in the past seven years. Some stay and continue to work to feed their substance abuse; some clean themselves up, and change their work/party habits; and, others leave and try to recover their lives.

Baby girl, I've been a sex worker for 15 years. I don't need to accept your challenge, I've already done it over and over. You already know that, though. I do know that I'm one of the exceptions, too.
A lot of what I found unpleasant in the porn industry wasn't in the performing. A physically difficult, or even uncomfortable/painful, scene wasn't really a drop in the bucket of unpleasantness. That's just me, though, I have an unreasonably high tolerance for physical discomfort. As long as I'm not seriously injured, I shrug most things off the minute they're done with. I also didn't choose to do a lot of the higher paying scenes that were physically demanding. I wasn't under pressure to make a lot of money, and I was experienced enough to understand my own mind and body enough to clearly anticipate the likely consequences.
The things I found difficult to tolerate were the purely unprofessional actions of others, and situations and conditions that were unconducive to working in any way, sexually oriented or not.
If boxers had to perform under the conditions that exist on most porn sets they wouldn't be able to take it, either. No matter how much punishment they're willing and able to accept physically.
Are drugs, of all kinds - recreational and performance enhancing, rampant in the sex industry? YES.

for random: cause quoting it would be to long.
you're not far off. I loved porn when I got in it,I never faked an orgasm and when the light bulb went off I quit,I loved it when I was in it.
I have asked myself many times (and my shrink) if sex work makes you crazy or if crazy people do sex work. My shrink says crazy people do sex work (fwiw)
I hate people, sex work has allowed me to be my full nutty ass self.
Legally I'm so nut's I'm disabled, but sex work has given me a way to be a total nut bag and not take charity.
I love drugs, I will take anything that might make me feel better, when I got into porn, I was expected to not feel pain, and my agent took me to the doctor and I got my first vicoden. I'm the sort of person that abuses every damn thing I can, so yeah I became addicted to pain killers.
I guess my point is people who abuse drugs abuse drugs

I agree about people who do drugs do them.
I catched multiple addictions basically all at once for no reason at all other then "I love to do drugs". I had a nice job, good money, a balanced life, felt reasonable save in my tracks, free to do drugs whenever I wanted.
Big fat mistake.
I had to learn that I'm prone to addictons and quite weak when it comes to battle them. 2 years later I had no job, no money, no positive outlook. The knowledge that the idiot fully responsible for that was me did not help much :).
Nowadays I have to avoid all kinds of drugs like the plague, after all the bad experiences I made it is still just one take and I'm on again, screw the consequences.

I am not anorexic. If I am, I'm really bad at it. I do have body image issues, but I had those long before porn and I don't think they're an escape. Controlling myself may be a relief from stress, but again, nothing to do with sex work.
As for clingers, I birthed most of them, so that's just reproductive guilt. The one I didn't, well, I dunno about him, he's useful to me in his own way. It's probaby co-dependent or something dysfunctional, but since I'm in control, it's okay. Control = stress relief.
Yeah, huge cups of tea are an addiction. I had it before porn, too. I'm not giving it up.
I agree that people who abuse will be abusers and people who don't use won't use. I wonder about the people who aren't on one side of the fence or the other. People who haven't been exposed to drugs, or stress, or a group of people who are accepting of behavior that is usually considered unacceptable. I do think that the sex industry does tend to tip those people into using. I think a lot of the people that get tipped in that direction are the same ones who would cave in to peer pressure in a variety of settings.
I don't entirely agree with your shrink about crazy people doing sex work. I do sorta agree, though. I think that most people who consider sex work as a viable option in our country have disconnected from socially/culturally accepted norms. That may or may not be "crazy", but it is probably less functional when compared to people who act in a societally normal way.

Oh no, thanks. I loosely had to do with porn business when I worked for a firm who did porn cover and other print media for a GGG style company here in germany. While the performers I met were all totally professional and working with them was fine, some of the producers, directors and promoters were such sleazy slimebags, it was simply unbearable.

OK. I thought it might be something like this but as I said, I'm almost 100% ignorant of the behind the scenes. I've tried to read stuff like AVN and some other insider stuff and all the drama and stuff just turns me off. And plus, I'm sure stuff goes on that you won't read about anywhere.
You know. For a viewer like me, it's really confusing. One day, a girl seems perfectly happy doing what she does, doesn't seem to mind at all and then, she posts on ADT saying she hates porn. So what you and Imak have said has been somewhat illuminating.
And I think I may have some idea what you mean about unprofessional behavior. Obviously, I've never done porn but in every job I've ever worked, there have been those people who seem to exist to make everyone else's day miserable.....each and every day. And those were so-called proper jobs with quite a bit of structure, organization and rules. I can imagine that porn allows for quite a few unsavory characters.

I guess I was wondering what made the light bulb go off? Do you feel that you changed yourself? Or did the business change you? This, I think is important and I think producers and directors should read this stuff and see that some of this stuff has consequences.
Verbatim? (your shrink) I'm not sure I quite agree with him/her. As far as hating people, I don't think you're alone there by a long shot. Some people just weren't meant to be an interlocking piece of society and porn offers a sort of escape for those people. This society is fucked up so I don't necessarily think someone who doesn't quite fit in or play by the rules is crazy. Maybe those of us who can't tolerate the standard 9-5 are the sanest ones around? It's not natural (the way people live). I think some people just never get over that.
Well, I'm not quite as anti drug as many but that's really upsetting. To hear that an agent would deliberately do something like that. I'm not so much against really soft drugs like pot (as I think they actually help some people and I didn't find it addictive) but stuff like Vicoden is quite a bit worse, IMO. I'm pretty much pro choice. In other words, I think people should be free to make their own decisions. Even if they're bad ones. But when someone virtually puts the pill in another person's mouth and gives them a drink, I dunno.
I think that's probably true enough. To me, that smacks a lot more of sanity than people who say drugs are the source of addiction. Which I find totally ridiculous. A person would never take drugs in the first place if they didn't feel so bad they were willing to do anything to feel better. Of course, sometimes, people just take drugs out of curiosity and unfortunately, some of them are so addictive, you're pretty much hooked after the first couple of hits.
But still, the dealer's bait is always something along the lines of "You wanna feel good?". If that's alluring enough for people of all walks of life, then I think there are bigger problems with the way we live than the drugs people take to try and block it all out. Sorry. I know that has little to do with porn. But it's all kinda connected. The reasons why two people (one in porn and the other not) might use heroin or something are not that different. Maybe people in porn are more likely to. But maybe the people in porn are more likely to be people who break the rules.

FTR, I never said I personally needed drugs, only that drugs of all-kind were eventually needed for many pornstars in order to stay high infront of a camera fucking day after day.
If I was wrong, I apologize.

I love you. I know, that sounds so fanboi, *but* i mean it, because you tell the truth even when you are not being pressured to. That takes *guts*. Most folks don't have that kind of (guts=backbone). And that is a certain kind of honesty that a lot of people can't deal with. People who don't like you, probably don't for that reason. People who do like you, do, for the same reason. You've got so much good wisdom going for you, and I think you know that.
On a selfish note, I wish (in vain) that we could sit a a table and have some drinks and shoot the shit together. I think that would be fun and enlightening.

I'm in this for 5 years now and I have never taken any sort of drugs, don't even smoke cigarettes or drink coffee.

work conditions are bad sometimes and if you complain about the fact that there is no warm water in the location house you're a bitch, a diva, prima donna. that bothers me sometimes. there are a couple of other things like the photographer yelling at you because you don't look sexy enough posing outside in January at 50 degrees. and all you hear is "well if you don't want to be here we can get somebody else in a minute..."
I also really hate make up artists who don't sanitize their brushes and get offended when you ask them to. stuff like that makes me angry but so far I could handle it all without drugs or therapy.

cobalt60,
I'm not fucking with you. And, I'm not saying that i don't find her very sexually attractive. What I'm saying is that, if I, or you, make a joke, there are lots of ways to *show* that is what we are doing.
I know, it's a lot more fun to just let it lie on the floor and see if anyone gets it. But, let's face it, most folks need a 'wink' to let them know it's a joke. Particularly if it's in print. Sitting at a bar, I'd probably know from your face you were joking. One of the things I love about the printed word is, it's exactness. Now, I don't want to throw a wet blanket on anyones campfire, but i think the printed word is one the last valuable things we all have left.
Now, I 'd like to be friends too. Let's have a shot of . . .what ever we've got.

That sounds like bullshit. Either someone is broken or not. If they function they're not.
You seem to say that someone is broken whether they function or do not function, which pretty much makes everyone broken as well as making the word itself completely useless and lose all meaning.
Sounds kind of typical for people who've been in the drug rehabilitation and therapy scene; those areas are full of really bad ideas that are just false and mainly used to keep people in therapy for the rest of their life. They're also easily discredited and show very little success compared to something sane like cognitive therapy.

I have to say, honestly, lets look at this. What do drug addicts need more than anything else? Money. What is one thing that porn can provide? Money. It's as simple as that. The porn industry doesn't create addicts, but the lure of fast, easy money attracts them.

you are incorrect my friend, the porn industry does create the addicts. most of the girls when they get into the business start to make really good money and also begin to have a shitload of free time, and no adult supervision or parental influence. so lots of money + lots of free time + left to their own devices + males preying on their weaknesses = drug use. for the most part, not everyone.

ChristianX,
I'm not saying that the industry is not a very easy place for girls/guys to abuse drugs. I work in the addiction field. Addiction is a disease, and most of these girls/guys had it before they ever thought about doing a porn movie. Maybe some people don't start using drugs until they get into the industry, but that doesn't mean they didn't have the disease before they got there. Sorry if my previous post was unclear.
