Just wondering how other people using XRent are noticing things. There's been repeated comments by people about their extremely slow shipping (which seems to be more in extemely slow accepting returns as it takes about 3 days for a disc to get from them to me, but normally at least a week to get from me to them), but am I the only one seeing the rental stock dwindling as well? I know I have a bunch of fetish titles and stuff that probably aren't high stock rental titles, but when I just checked, there were only 17 of my 36 titles listed as being IN, where it used to be 3/4 of my titles or more. AM I the only one seeing this?

I would guess that holiday surge through the postal service has has a negative effect on inventory levels. There's a lot more stuff in transit.

I've noticed that there has been an extra 2 to 3 day delay when sending non-priority (i.e. first class mail) through USPS.

I can see more stuff being in transit, but there should be a balance of in and out. I also know that a lot of my stuff is different stuff, which is why I was asking to see if others are seeing the same thing on their lists.

The same thing should go for the timing. I can understand things taking an extra day or two for the holiday season. The question on things come in when I shipped discs back to Bush and XRent on the same day, and I receive the replacements discs from Bush in the mail the same day that XRent shows my discs arriving there. It happened two, if not three, times last month.

I'm just wondering more if I seem to be some kind of freak with these things happening to me as XRent used to be great. I had no problem subscribing to them at a higher price because I thought they were offering more and better service. I also like supporting them because I know they're a big supporter of Adult DVD Talk (and I respect them a lot for offering a military discount), but I'm starting to have a hard time justifying them with a lower selection and the service appearing to drop off.

That's interesting. It blows the mail service delaying things theory.

Someone mentioned something in another thread that I thought was interesting. They stated that packages sent from BushDVD have a postmark while those from XRentDVD do not. This is an indication to me that they use different interfaces to the USPS.

I'm guessing, and this is pure speculation I have no insider knowledge of their shipping systems, that BushDVD runs their postage through a Pitney-Bowes type of system and ships regular First Class mail.

I'm guessing that XRentDVD does their own USPS manifesting. Manifest mailing streamlines the processing of U.S. mail transactions. It allows mailers to combine mail pieces of identical or different weights and rates into a single mailing. Any mailer who pays postage by permit with an advance deposit account may manifest mail. Postal manifesting also allows mailers to take advantage of a variety of postal discounts and automation incentives.

What does the return postage look like on each company's respective mailing packages?

Bush has a postage stamp (ink stamp, not stamp stamp). IIRC (they're all in the mail right now), XRent has a permit number thingie in the upper right, but there's a spot under the return address for 'return postage to be filled in by post office'. I could almost understand it taking an extra day for that, but I think my recent average for returning rentals was 2-3 days for Bush and 7 days for XRent.

In the last couple of months I've noticed a slowdown in delivery times, too. I live on the East Coast. I used to receive my rentals within 2-3 days (amazing). Now it is 3-4 days. Could be the holidays. We'll see.

I haven't had a real problem with rental stock. I usually rent new titles and accept the fact that I have to wait awhile.

I think Xrent is still the best out there, but they may have slipped a bit.

Xrent throttles.

I guess the overall love for XRent is because of their past reputation as a top-notch sales and/or the weekly "charge per disc" rental service. I've used neither, nor the monthy plan.

I wonder since they do the per disc rental for a set fee (typically 3.99?) they wouldn’t want to see the per disc “price” they receive from the unlimited plan drop just too far below that, thus the need to slow down to say, the consumer gets around 15 DVDs per month on the 5 out plan which is like them renting each title for under $2.50 (assuming a monthly charge of $36.00 – not to mention that the shipping charges get paid out of that monthly fee instead of an extra 2.99 added on for the weekly rental program.) Maybe, since the unlimited part of their business is just one part of it and not the main part it gets lower priority, so if they don’t have enough manpower to get to everything, they take care of sales and the normal fee-per-disc rental before checking in the rentals for the unlimited program and sometimes accumulate a backlog there.

Ah, hell…just the late night ramblings from someone that doesn’t know any better. Maybe any delays are due to the USPS…it’s really key (from the consumers point of view) that the next “new” discs are sent out the same day as the “old” ones are received. They still do that right? (The only other disappointing part I can see of the unlimited program is that new releases (in the first 30 days) aren’t part of available titles to rent, via the unlimited program.)

Just to put the record straight. XRentDVD does not throttle customers.

The difference in speed has nothing to do with the postage type. We have checked on this and witnessed first hand how the post office is able to process all postage and sort the mail on the same day it arrives (to or from).

The difference in speed is directly related to the packaging that Bush is using. They have gotten the mailer thick enough that it is treated as package and traverses a different system in the USPS than regular mail.

Bush's 2-disc system is an advantage for speed but does not scale well. This is why Netflix abandoned the practice early on. We wish them well as there is definitely room for many companies to provide adult rental programs. However, please do not assume that because they are sometimes faster in the mail that we or others are somehow throttling our customers. We make multiple pickups from the post office to get as much mail as possible each day and turn it around the same day. We are commited to providing good service for our customers.

We have had some setbacks at our NJ facility (it's so damn cold there), but it should be operational within a couple of months. This will help those of you on the East coast. If it is a success then we may open other facilities to bring down the shipping time for others. As with everything we do, we try to do it well or not at all.

Thanks for all the positive notes from ADT members.

The X factor in the online rental business is the POST OFFICE. We have also explored the inner workings of the post office and found their many flaws and inconsistencies. Some of which cause customers to believe companies are "throttling" their DVDs. Like XRent, we aim to provide great customer service. So where is the benefit of throttling if it will only piss off your customers and cause them to cancel. Unfortunately, the post office is the only game in town.

As a competitor, we have a high opinion of XRentDVD and believe they are only one of the few online rental companies that actually deliver the goods.

Thanks to both of you for helping enlighten us on the inner workings! Regarding movies via mail and quicker turnaround times, a couple of months ago I got an email from Blockbuster Online saying that they have it set up so the U.S. Postal Service will notify them when the envelope containing the returned DVD has been scanned in at which point Blockbuster will send out the next movie before they actually receive the returned one. Do either of you (or could you?) employ such technology? Or is this just a bit of Blockbuster hogwash?

I was wondering the exact same thing....it's funny, though, I haven't noticed my blockbuster rentals being shipped out any sooner since the announcement.

The tracking technology is available, but the question is how well does the USPS get the information back to Blockbuster so they can act on it.

Another question I have about X-Rent lately (don't think it deserves an entire threat) is the new releases section.

X-Rent has almost always consistently beat other stores in posting new DVDs for sale right when they are released.

Over the past week, most of the other stores I shop at have had new releases (and a bigger selection of them) in stock sometimes two or three days earlier than X-Rent (just one example... example, the Hustler DVD releases this week).

Also, I noticed that new releases are being posted later in the evening. They used to be up by about 6:30 or 7pm Eastern time, now they often don't appear until after 8. This may not seem like a big difference, but it used to be that an order would go out on the same night if you got it in early enough.

Now, it's hard to place an order and have it ship because of the late postings for new releases. There also seems to be a trickle of new releases each night (maybe 10 total new releases), rather than 2 or 3 pages like I've seen in the past.

I hope this is just a temporary glitch, because I've always been partial to X-Rent because of their promptness in posting new releases.

Sorry about the delays. Much of the staff responsible for the new releases are off "pressing the flesh" at the AVN show in Las Vegas. We should return to the normal daily schedule next week. Thanks for your patronage.

XRentDVD WAS a good provider of online DVD rentals. It used to be that when I put a DVD on my queue, it would arrive the NEXT day and when I sent it back, it would show up as received the day after in their system. And what really amazed me was the consistency of delivery times. One day to send and receive for about ... two months I would say. Those were blissful old times.

Now? Well, now the delivery times are just random. For me, it ranges anywhere from a day to about a week. Needless to say, it's been a very frustrating experience, and I'm very glad I discovered this forum where I learned about BushDVD. It's actually cheaper, faster, and MUCH more satisfying. Keep up the good work, guys!

I've rented from XRentDVD about 3 times now, and I have absolutely no complaints. Got 5 or 6 DVDs at a time, all packaged in an easy-to-handle envelope. Big "Please Mail By..." date stamped on the back. Very user-friendly. About 3 days to ship to me, and probably 2 to ship from me (I'm in Kansas). Prompt e-mail message confirming that they'd received my returned DVDs, etc. Very smooth.

Meanwhile, Excalibur Films's "DVDRentz" program sent me each of three DVDs separately, even though I clicked the option to have them all sent together. Then they said they sent me a DVD on the 9th of December, and it never showed up. They replied, "Let us know if it's not there by Dec 23". I let them know it hadn't arrived, and it's now in the process of being re-shipped (after another 7 to 10 day backorder period), and it's been over a month since they said they originally shipped it (a month and a half after I had originally ordered it). OH, I should mention - when I clicked the "Check Inventory" button by each of my films, they all said "Now" (available immediately) - which is the only reason I decided to rent from them - no waiting. Yet the one that I still haven't received was actually a back-order title, and is still a back-order title, even though its status had clearly said "Now". So their inventory system LIES. Beware Excalibur/DVDRentz.

Okay, I'm not sure why this didn't hit me (or anybody else for that matter) quicker. The main thing that Bush does that XRent doesn't which affects the thickness of the package is that they have a foam sleeve which they insert the discs in. This should help protect the DVDs, seems like it adds virtually nothing for weight, and should be a very low cost item (and yes, I do realize that it adds up). Why doesn't XRent use a padded sleeve in their shipments as well if it causes that kind of difference in shipping times?

I've been on the Xrent preferred program for a good long while now. I don't really have a problem with their shipping times. It varies, and it definitely does seem that it takes longer for the discs to get BACK to them then it takes for the discs to get to me, but I've never felt like I was being "throttled" at all.

As for the selection, that's a tough one. I do find that many of the titles I'd like to get are "out" at any given time, and this goes just as much for the newer titles as it does for older titles. I have a long list in the queue though, so it really doesn't bother me too much. I imagine it's difficult trying to gauge how many copies of each DVD to stock, and to KEEP in stock as the age of the title increases and its initial popularity decreases. I think Xrent still does a fine job, and their website is better than ever. I assumed that these little hiccups were merely nothing more than growing pains. They've treated me well over the last few years, and I still put my faith in them.

The main damage incurred in first class mail is from bending of the discs as they go around the sorting machine wheels. Unfortunately, the USPS still has many of the older machines with 12-inch sorting wheels out there. The padding would not help with damage from bending. This is why Netflix and Blockbuster don't bother with it either.

The primary reason that mail travels faster to you then it does back to us is because of where it is submitted into the postal system. We submit outgoing mail at the main sorting facility for Orange County, CA. This results in a 1-2 day difference on average.

Makes perfect sense to me. Like I said, my experience with Xrent, aside from the occasional "out" title, which is, of course, to be expected, has been nothing but positive.

When I think about what it used to be like before companies like Xrent came about, the comparison is nothing less than laughable. Along with ADT, Xrent and others like them have revolutionized the efficiency and speed, and value with which porn is distributed to the end-customers.

I'm having the same problem, for instance I placed my rental order for Tails from the Crack and Perfect Specimens 2 back on January 6 and now it is January 14 and I still have not recieved them. Plus my preferred plan is extremely slow on both ends, it's taking way too long for my DVD's to get back to Xrent. I've only recieved like 5 titles in half a month and the plan is 5 DVD's out at a time with unlimited shipments in one month so I feel like I'm getting screwed. I'm glad to see this post so I'm not the only one experiencing the slow shipping of Xrent.

Okay, I'm a little confused. Did you just place the order for the rentals on Jan. 6 or did they ship out on Jan. 6? I ask this because I can see both titles being very popular and would expect to have a slight wait for them. Plus, are they regular weekly rentals? If this is for the preferred plan, both titles should take quite a while (IIRC, Tales From The Crack has a preferred wait until April).

No, I rented these titles directly. I paid the full rental price for both titles, this has nothing to do with the preferred plan. Usually when you place an order it ships the next day. Sorry for the confusion, I was trying to explain the slow delays for regular orders and the preferred plan. The reason I rented these titles was because I don't want to wait till the Spring time to watch them.

I've never had aprob with xrent. I'm lucky since I live in Corona,CA..near xrent so when I buy a dvd I usually get it 2 days later. The updates coming out later and not the same day as the studio says is a bit of a bummer but not that big a deal to me. Long as I get the DVD for the price I want...it's all good.

I've been buying my adult DVDs almost exclusively from Xrent for over two years now and their service is outstanding.

I just started renting titles from them a couple of weeks ago and I have no complaints at all. I've been renting ala carte instead of signing up for a monthly membership. I don't mind having to wait a while to rent the newer titles, although I was able to rent a brand new release last week so I'm not sure if it was a mistake on the part of XRent or perhaps they were just overstocked with that item-not sure.

Overall, I think XRent is the best in the business.

Only members of XrentPreferred, as I understand it, are required to wait 30 days for all new releases...that way those who rent these titles a-la-carte get a better in-stock selection.

Doh! I must have misread the policy because I thought it was the other way around. That makes no sense to me. If I'm paying for a preferred membership, I should have first dibs on new releases.

Well now I'm really glad I chose not to get a monthly membership.

If you let them know via your queue on their website that they haven't arrived yet...they'll probably send you some more titles to replace those that haven't arrived yet...just as a precaution...this way you're kind-of compensated for the unusually long shipping times.

I have had really good dealings with XRent up until I moved to my new apt. I lived across the street from a post office before and it usually took two days for me to get anything from them and when I buy dvds from them now that still holds true for the most part unless it's near a weekend. However, I have had terrible success the last two times I've tried to rent discs from them. I have no idea why this happened and it is surely something with the post office here but it just doesn't make sense to me. I have no idea of how I can check this out but I've lost two orders and the others took over a week each time to get out to me and I live in Arizona so that makes no sense. I still hold XRent in very high regard and use them almost exlusively to buy my dvds but as for renting I think that will be almost nonexistent from me if I'm not going to get my order for over a week and I have no intentions of paying a higher postal rate as I don't know that would guarantee me receiving my rental order. It's a small frustration but that might help me in the long run not ordering so much, lol.

IIRC XRent asks that you alert them after a week. They then ask you to wait "a few more days" just in case, and when you let them know it hasn't arrived the second time they ship out replacements.

I think I've been on their preferred plan for about two years now. To add to Bono's comments, I haven't had a disc lost or severely delayed until this year. Since Jan., however, I've had it happen with two DVDs.

Since the topic is about xrent I'm going to pose my question here but I'm also going to start a thread on it as someone not involved in this thread may be able to see and answer my question when posed as a topic header. I've never rented online and am looking to do so with xrent as they have the plan I'm most looking for. Here is my question though. I'm looking at their preferred lite rental plan. It's plan says you can't rent more than five in a month and you must rent two dvds at a time. How is this possible? If I rent two, then another two, how do I get my fifth movie? I mean I can't rent a third group of two as that will go over my five limit. I also can't rent the fifth as a single since it says I must rent two at a time. Any help would be appreciated.

Voyeur,

I'm on the "Lite" program. It doesn't work that way exactly. You can have 2 discs out at a time, that doesn't mean that you must exchange two discs for two discs. The discs are shipped separately, in their own envelopes. When you're done with one, you send one back, and Xrent replaces it with the next available one in your queue. The only tricky thing is that if you want a 2-disc rental from xrent (a lot of Wicked titles, and some Evil Angel titles, etc.), you must send 2 discs back at one time so that they are received at the same time, so the 2 disc rental is sent to you.

The Lite program works well for me. I just wish they didn't have so many obligatory 2 disc rentals (would rather have them available separately), and offered new titles in the preferred program. Otherwise, Xrent's been good to me.

I'd like to make a small correction here, just for clarity. We will send you a 2 disc rental even if you only send a single disc rental back. However, once we have mailed it to you we treat it as 2 discs.

i.e. You are on the 3 disc plan
- you send one DVD back
- We send you a 2 disc Rental
- you now have 4 discs out
- if you send back a single DVD we don't ship another one as you now have 3 discs out
- you return the 2 disc rental later that week and we mail out 2 DVDs

The above is only an example. There are many different ways it could work out for you. We treat 2 disc sets as a single DVD when we allocate them to your account, and as 2 discs from that point on.

I hope this clarifies this somewhat.
