Hi all,
I've posted here about this before, and even on different forums as well, but I'm getting really tired of having to buy porn on DVD in 2013. I have a wonderful new Blu-ray player and a fancy HDTV that makes my DVDs look very good indeed, but nothing (not even HD downloads) looks better than a Blu-ray.
I have heard the arguments that it costs too much and labels were losing money. That's all well and good, but this was 2008 and 2009, that was eons ago in terms of Blu-ray adoption. Today, many, many more people have Blu-ray players, and even more people have HDTVs, and would only need to spend less than $100 to buy a player.
I appreciate the studios that are still producing them, like Digital Playground, Elegant Angel, Hustler, and occasionally, Penthouse, but if you don't like their porn, you have no incentive to buy their Blu-rays, so it's a bit of a self-defeating cycle.
We all know niche porn is a huge market, so where are the oral titles, the g/g titles, the black titles, the creampie titles, and so on? I realize money is tight for some of you, but costs are not what they were, and I would like to see SOMEBODY step up and put out a Blu-ray this year.
but if you're going to do it, please do it right. Don't do it like Brazzers, who were more excited about hawking their 200th DVD which included their first Blu-ray, than actually selling their first Blu-ray (and it is crap quality, at that). Please make a press announcement for it, and if possible, either use a BD-50, or keep it under two hours and encode it properly with a decent bit rate. This shouldn't be difficult, you just have to realize that it is important to create awareness, especially in a market like adult films--if people don't know it exists, they won't buy it.
And if you were to do this, let me be the first to tell you: I would be willing to pay a small premium for this. Nothing huge, mind you, but $10 more than the DVD price? Hell yes! And maybe even a bit more than that, depending on the circumstances.
Surely someone in the industry has a Blu-ray player and enjoys watching mainstream Blu-rays, yes? Is it that much of a stretch to see that I'd like to do the same again with porn?

So...I'm the only one who wants more porn on Blu-ray? That's kind of pathetic, no? There have to be others on this forum who want to see more porn in true and full HD and not just lame, compressed HD downloads, or is it that, seven years on, nobody has a Blu-ray player?
Come on people, post! There needs to be more discussion about the format on here, because I'm tired of Digital Playground producing all the Blu-rays here, damn it.

Unfortunately, many people do not really care that much about picture quality. Studios could release high picture quality on DVD, but they have tended not to for years. I have aquired some of the DP and Wicked DVD/Blu-ray combination releases. The picture quality of these DVD discs matches that of the Blu-ray discs on my equipment. I watch the DVD instead because the menu system is easier to use. Perhaps all Blu-ray players are created near equal in delivering picture quality. But the best DVD picture on an HDTV is given by a Blu-ray player using an HDMI connection. One needs to research, to find which Blu-ray players deliver top pictyre quality when playing DVDs. Unless things have changed, DVD picture quality varies among different Blu-ray players.

Marketing and PR by the porn industry is pathetic. Several years ago when the industry flooded retailers with Blu-ray and that other HD formatted disc type, the industry made the mistake of grossly overpricing the Blu-ray discs, making customers unwilling to buy them to even try, let alone switch to. The overpricing also made retailers unwilling to rent them, therefore noone tried them. Meanwhile, the movie industry was selling Blu-ray discs at a price comparable to DVD discs.

Additionally, if the porn industry keeps crying about piracy (not that anyone in thier right mind cares or is even listening), it would market something that is not easily obtained via piracy.

I am very disappointed about the picture quality offered by the industry on disc. The porn industry can and does deliver poor or mediocre picture quality on Blu-ray too.

Porn is struggling as it is. Why would they print movies in a format that few people will buy?

It's still a question of money, making and printing Blu-ray is a lot more expensive than DVD's, so only the largest selling studios can afford it. I was talking with one of the smaller European studios and they told that for them it costs 8 Euro per Blu-ray just to print them!

^That still doesn't explain why everybody else seemingly stopped three years ago. Blu-ray has a lot more presence now than it did even in 2010, but I still hear the same song from people about how expensive it is and all that. Well, newsflash, HD porn sells, and it sells even more now than it did three years ago. It's now expected that sites shoot in 1080 resolution, and everything is set for Blu-ray, except no one is releasing the media.
And yet, there must be something in it, because Digital Playground hasn't let up, and neither has Hustler, nor any of the uncensored JAV labels, who release several Blu-ray titles a month for almost $40 a pop.
Now that the market is there and the economy is starting to look up, I'm sure a $40 Blu-ray from, say, Evil Angel, or Vivid, or Hard Candy would move enough units. And sure, not every title is worth the cost, but surely one a month?! Or even every two months? Somebody can't afford SIX TITLES in one year? Maybe not the smaller labels, but some people are just being tight-assed at this point.
A lot of you need to get over this ridiculous trepidation and begin to slowly test the waters. I will gladly pay money for Blu-rays, but DVDs, not so much.

^Perhaps the timing for Blu-Ray porn is/was wrong. With internet-based video delivery sorta taking over from physical media, the Blu-ray Disc format has maybe been leapfrogged by the newer sexier more flexible technology...maybe? I think you need a pretty high-end setup to discern any differences amongst various higher-resolution HD's...right? So, how many people have paid the big bucks for the high-end setups?

Having recently purchased a new computer with a really nice 22" LED LCD monitor, I can appreciate the OP's desire to see the media step in line with the equipment. However, I know there are a lot of us out there who keep our equipment for a long time and use it until it dies. Not everyone has modern setups capable of appreciating things like Blu Ray. In my own case for example I'm still using my $40 DVD player, which is now about the 4th or 5th unit I've had to buy. I don't usually buy the modern equipment due to the expense and how fast it depreciates when something better comes along. I know this is progress, but for a lot of budget minded people the cost is too high.
I remember seeing all those Blue Rays a few years ago and remember noticing the difference in price. It was a bit too high considering my desire was the content on DVD, not the type of DVD.
I'm guessing this means the market for porn to be delivered on standard DVD must still be very high. My entire collection is in that format and the picture quality and sound are excellent. Maybe when I have to buy a new player and get into blu ray I'll have a higher appreciation for the OP's thoughts but I'm not there yet.

Most companies producing porn today have websites. They shoot for website then later use that content
for DVD. Possible they prefer to use SD instead of full HD to reduce disk storage requirements?
Most blu-ray disc cost more to rent also. Its not really worth paying extra for blu-ray vs DVD
and like somebody said above I think most porn fans don't care about blu-ray quality. Most of
the guys I know care more about watching sports in full HD than porn.

It's still the other way around for most production companies with a few notable exceptions. Also in general just putting a bunch of webscenes on a DVD or vice versa is not the best idea. Webcontent and DVD-content are not the same. If you pay-per-minute you don't want to see a 10 minute intro and if you watch a DVD you don't want 5 scenes with identical setups shot in the same location (which is fine for weekly web updates).
Producing porn and running a website are two very different jobs and the smart producers use an experienced webcompany like Gamma Entertainment to run their paysites. Doing it all yourself is, except for some very big companies, a recipe for disaster.
Back to Blu-ray: it's simply a money thing, for most companies it's not worth the investment.

^ I think zambi's point was more that the web-first companies arguably now constitute the majority of the porn producers, at least by scenes shot. Just the big 3 (Brazzers, Naughty America, Bang Bros) probably release 150-200 scenes per week across their various web properties, or the equivalent of 30-50 DVD titles - you've got to go down the list to some pretty niche studios to match that total in DVD-first content, if it's possible at all.
It's got to affect the marketplace that so much porn is now shot by companies who have little incentive to offer HD content on disc since their HD focus is on downloads and the disc market is just a throw-in where standard DVD might be cost-effective but Bluray probably isn't. And that's some of the biggest web-first players - for smaller companies it's probably not even a passing thought (heck, many don't even release standard DVDs but are happy to put 1080p content on the web).

Hopefully it becomes much cheaper for studios to release on Blu-Ray. I'm one of the few who supported the format by paying extra for Blu-Ray. If it gets cheaper hopefully more will support it.

^You can start by boycotting Disney! They stated that any Blu-ray printer who wants to do business with them can not also do any adult work, which makes the choice for adult companies to get their Blu-rays printed limited and more expensive.

Brazzers, etc. release so many scenes because they have to. The web site content is online for free within hours of release, so if any of them want to keep customers, they have to shoot new content almost 24/7 in order to keep paying customers happy.
Notice that Blu-ray porn, by contrast, is far less torrented. Sure, you can find them, but it's far less convenient for pirates to take the time to upload an entire Blu-ray rip, than it is to upload a web download, or even a DVD. I still contend, however, that most of the new porn being pirated originates from download or VOD sites and not from physical media--the studios have simply made it too easy by putting so much content online.
Companies could fix a lot of their financial woes if they would stop releasing their content as web downloads and go back to only releasing physical media. At least then, you would always have to get at least one sale before your movie is pirated.
And I still don't buy the problem of cost, it just doesn't make any sense that companies in such dire straits can afford to produce so many DVDs, but then, Blu-ray, by contrast, is still too expensive for even a few titles a year.
Look at all the compilation DVDs that come out, does anybody really buy those? If you like the porn, you've probably already bought the DVDs or web scenes the compilation has. And yet, the amount of seemingly redundant DVDs that come out is simply staggering, again, considering that money is supposed to be so tight. So, cut five or ten of those out and make a Blu-ray...simple.
The more I think about it, the more infuriating it is, actually. I mean, you have consumers, like me, here begging to pay top dollar for your product, but you don't want to get involved. I mean, it's just another reason not to bother supporting anyone's content anymore...it's like several of you need a good kick in the head or something.

I disagree with the logic here. With a fast computer (or even a slow computer), it's easy to rip the dvd into a video file. And after the first pirate releases the DVDrip onto the internet, then it's available to all pirates, to spread freely throughout the world. VOD is a convenience to consumers. Instant gratification. No waiting for a DVD to arrive in the by mail or UPS. No shopping around amongst web retailers, comparing costs, and shipping costs, and in-stock status. No driving to your local (or not-so-local) porno shop. For the law-abiding consumer, the VOD is a very attractive option, compared to the physical media. For the pirate community, it's largely irrelevant, physical media vs. VOD.
Those comps aren't meant for people like us. They're meant for that guy who is brand new to porn, who has no frame of reference about porn performer names and studios and good quality vs. bad quality and new production vs. ancient history. To such a person, 6hrs for $10 is a damn good deal.

^If what you say is true, then why do I consistently see VOD scenes available from torrent sites well before the DVD is out? Try it now, Google "Lex is a Motherfucker" which is an Evil Angel DVD out on Tuesday. ALL of the scenes are already freely available, and almost certainly because Evil Angel had the stupidity to release them on their member site already.
I don't know why this is so hard for people to understand. VOD and member sites have probably become the #1 source of piracy in porn. I had Jules Jordan on here try to tell me that all of his piracy comes from DVDs, yet he ignored that scenes from his as-yet-unreleased DVDs were already on the torrent sites, and in 1080 resolution, at that! Perhaps three to five years ago, most piracy came from physical media (i.e. DVDs), but if you think about it, a pirate can join a studio VOD site for a year, for the cost of between 3-6 DVDs, and then they get access to the massive backlog of scenes, as well as twelve months of new scenes, delivered early, before they hit DVD, and often in HD quality--buying a DVD is rendered practically useless for pirates now.
Yes, physical media does contribute to piracy, but it is MUCH easier for pirates to simply join the member web site and then download all the scenes before the DVD comes out. And most every major title gets a VOD release on or near the physical media release date from somewhere...if it's not the label's membership site, then it's a PPM site like AEBN or HotMovies, or Gamelink or Adult DVDEmpire. Just because they are identified as "DVDrip" or even "BDrip" does not mean they actually came from a disc source, and as we've gone over, it's extremely rare to see a 1:1 torrent of a Blu-ray.
If a label had the balls to release not a major title, but a moderate one, only on Blu-ray and not on DVD or VOD, I would hazard that it wouldn't be torrented for a few months, at least. And even then, there would probably only be a handful of them around, which could easily be deleted.

I'm thinking the real reason behind the lack of Blu-ray is increased production overhead. Like was mentioned, many of the HD discs that did come out weren't much better than they were on DVD. The reason is that the capture devices for the source material weren't that great. At this point, my phone can capture 1080p -- it's not just a matter of specs. The reason behind DP and Blu-ray is that they own a RED camera - those caputure enough data that there's a point in releasing high-bandwidth HD. These guys shooting dSLR or the equivalent just aren't recording enough data to justify the added cost in pressing extra discs. And because their primary way of distribution is digital download, there isn't an incentive to shoot with more expensive cameras and serve up bandwidth-intensive downloads.

I still tend to think that if Blu-rays were more profitable more companies would do it. I'm sure the porn companies are well aware of the sales and profits of Blu-ray and have decided it's not worth the manufacturing costs in most cases. I don't think we'll see more Blu-ray releases simply because sales for discs continue to fall as VOD/streaming/downloads become more common.
For me personally, I don't care about Blu-ray porn. I have a Blu-ray player and HD tv and buy most of my mainstream movies in Blu-ray when possible but when it comes to porn I just don't care enough to spend the extra cost. I buy DIGITAL PLAYGROUND Blu-rays because there's no option not to and the price is reasonable. But even watchig those movies I don't look at them and wish I could see all porn at that level of HD. Regular DVDs have a pretty good picture these days and I'm fine with that picture. To me having HD porn isn't important because isn't not like Hollywood movies where I'm watching the whole thing in one setting and watching great cinematography, acting, FX locales, soundtracks etc.

Compilations are great. The vast majority of people don't watch so much porn that they wil already have most of the content on a compilation release. I like compilations because they tend to have a stronger cast or spotlight a fav performer. My biggest problem with most releases is that most of the time I'm buying a movie when I only have real interest in watching a couple or so of the performers. I wish some of the bigger companies would actually put out more compilations. I'd love it if DP put out a Jesse Jane or Riely Steel, "Best Of" movie. I'd like to see Jules Jordan and Evil Angel put out compilations of fan fav performers or series.
In fact...I'd be more willing to pay extra for those on Blu-ray than most of the regular release stuff.

To be perfectly honest - your inability to understand why so many compilations get released is of a piece with your inability to understand why few people share your enthusiasm for increased Bluray support. Face it, you're part of a rather small minority of porn consumers, and as long as you refuse to accept that fact your continued complaints about being neglected by porn producers amount to little more than "I want this want this want this, and I don't care if they're actually able to turn a profit with it".

^I don't have an "inability" to understand why compilations are released (although there really are far too many of them), but at the same time, they add to the already massive amount of DVDs being pressed, released, stored and sold by companies, and after a while it becomes overkill. If your profits are not great, should you really be bothering to release the same material in a new DVD, with a new encode and and disc and cover art? I realize the fees are probably small, but some companies could probably save a bit by scaling back their compilation lines.
^^To Draxxx, my concern is that the companies that stopped three to five years ago are making assumptions based on data from when they were selling Blu-ray titles...which was three to five years ago. Blu-ray adoption has increased significantly, and costs have come down, since that time. It simply can't be that expensive to try one or two titles, and at today's standards, they could hopefully be made better than they were. Many companies have equipment that shoots at or better than Blu-ray quality now, but they still consider that most people won't buy a better version of their videos. I contend that the market is now too small to draw conclusion about how new Blu-rays would sell, and the only remedy is for someone to grow a pair, step up, and try it again. I've bought a number of Blu-rays in the past year or so, because I have found them cheap, but that's because they are all at least a few years old...and as I've said before, I would be willing to buy new Blu-rays for much higher prices, and I would even get compilation Blu-rays as long as they were done with quality in mind.
You can't really expect to get accurate data on how a video format would sell if all of your releases came out over three years ago. We need to have a couple of new titles from a couple of unusual suspects, it's as simple as that.

That's not really correct. Disney does not want to do business with a company who will print porn titles in the same physical facility that Disney discs will be printed. They don't want to take ANY chance that a Disney title could accidentally have porn content on it. The downside of this happening would be disastrous for Disney.
If Jacco's Blu-ray Printing Company opened and there was one facility for mainstream Blu-ray discs and a separate facility for porn Blu-ray discs, Disney would do business with you (provided you met the rest of their quality control requirements).
Disney has the same policy for DVD's as well.

I totally agree. There should be more Blu-ray porn. It is realy much better quality than DVD if you have the right hardware and the bitrates of Blu-rays are lot higher than downloadable HD-porn.
The problem for me is that I love hard anal gonzo porn and Digital Playground is too soft for me. Other companies don't release often on Blu-rays.
I would pay up to 10 $ more, too for Blu-rays but there are not that much good one available.
The best gonzo series on Blu-ray is Romantic Anal Moments from Sineplex but there are only two titles out right now :-( . But Vol 2 was the best porn bluray I bought:

Big shame but Blu Ray is irrelevant.
Shame really - i have a player and its much better than DVD.
I help my friend with his adult shop in the UK. I can assure you that its the internet that initailly made studios much money is now destroying it. Yes there is piracy but what affects the sales of DVDs and the few Blu Rays is the internet sites that allow the viewer to watch porn for free. This has smashed sales of the product.
It now means that in ETO magazine - Erotic Trade Only - the trades magazine that the monthly new releases section has gone from 2-3 pages to half of one column of text.
So the industry is in deep trouble as the income source = the product = the DVD sales has gone. So Blu Ray unfortuntaely isnt relevent which is a shame but thats life.

Bump. Was looking over some olden-time threads, and this one and this one here from 2008(Will All Porn Be Put On BlueRay Discs?) caught my eye.
The big problems seem to be exactly what Jacco mentioned. Cost is a big factor, combined with the niche nature of Adult.
Still, Digital Playground and Hustler are still putting out a lot on dvd. I wonder what they're doing that makes it worth it to them, whereas its not worth it to Vivid and Wicked?

Much as it annoys me, as i love buying DVDs and BluRay - its irrelevent. Mainstream movies on download to internet ready TVs is the future and its now. I dislike the internet - it destroyed my friend's adult shop in the UK because people no longer purchased DVDs but that is the reality of todays world.
BluRay is fab i agree and its a shame but it is a technology dead-end. Big shame.
