I won't be cheating it at all. That doesn't change the facts. All copy protection is easily defeated. If human eyeballs can see it, copies can be made of it. This will always be true. No technical gimcrackery of any kind will ever change that one simple fact. You have more chance of legitimately buying the Brooklyn Bridge than you will ever have of buying DRM that actually works. In my opinion as a software developer with thirty years in the business, anyone taking money for selling copy protection schemes is committing fraud.
If the copy protection were software I would agree with you, but it isnt. its integrated into every bit of hardware you attach to the system, the cable, the monitor everything. And you think it can be defeated....defeat satelitte TV you cant
You will admit your statement requires a flexible interpretation of "copy"? IF DRM forces the copy-maker to have a somehow diminished result, then the DRM is at least partially successful. Right? And if the DRM workaround is clunky or a hassle, only the more dedicated will attempt to make copies. So, the discouragement of the less-dedicated is another partial success of DRM. Right? The other side is that if you can easily move it than people who didn't pay for it can as well. I've seen people trying to get extra codes for the Digital Copies that are coming out on DVD now.
We don't discuss techniques for making unlicensed copies on this forum, therefore I am constrained not to refute your opinion. May I simply add that the techniques of encryption, electronics and image capture and display are not secrets. They are widely dispersed public knowledge. They are widely known among teenagers who have large incentives to make unlicensed copies. Such people are already using techniques that DRM simply cannot touch in any way whatever.

Making a copy is one thing. Being able to play it is another. I cake a million copies of GTA4 I can post them to usenet. But not one of them will work. And thats not because it isnt an identical copy either. When you can show many any evidence of anyone successfully playing a pirated GTA4 on a PS3 I will listen till then its all just talk. Im not saying Im for drm or against it im just saying its inevitable and its just around the corner and there aint much anyone will be able to do about it.
I think the record labels would disagree with you. They are having massive conniption fits about the poor quality MP3 copies of their CDs that are floating all over the internet. The MPAA is also terribly upset about the very diminished copies of their movies that are made by patrons who take their video cameras to the cinema. Those modern video cameras produce a much better image than we used to pay for on pre-recorded VHS tapes. So, I would say that the two organizations with the biggest investments in copy protection have both rejected your criterion for "success".Only the first workaround is a hassle for somebody. The resulting product is DRM free, so the next million copies are no hassle at all. Many consumers have actually stated that they prefer the pirate product, because all of the locked down commercials and lawyer crap have been removed. This does have limits of course. If anyone can watch a movie for $2 on demand, there is no incentive whatever for the average viewer to waste an hour and a disk to copy it. That is probably the long term solution.
I think you're pretty safe there. I'm not interested in games or game consoles, so I'm sure I will never have any such evidence to show you. When it happens, I won't even hear about it.What people will do about it is refuse to buy it. The first time they bring home a DVD that won't play, they will take it back to the store for a refund. After they have done that three times, they will start to check the label for HDCP before they buy, and only buy disks without it. Most of the DRM crippled disks will end up rotting in the remainder bins. Meanwhile, unlicensed copying of the same disks will go on unabated. If I owned a studio, I guarantee I would not bet my company on such useless technology. Mike, I'm sure you're right that people will make this stuff, and that some studios will buy it. That part is truly inevitable. Unfortunately for them, they've been sold a pup. It simply cannot work.
Hi, I think we drifted a little away from the topic :) anyway ... One thing i find very sad about not only porn comming to BR is Movies in general comming to BR. Maybe i´m the absolute minority here but do people really go to the video store to rent a movie (or 2 or 3 or ...) to watch them right now ? I used to get a few VHS Tapes and temporarily saved them for later viewing when i got the time. Nowadays it´s almost impossible to tell which dvd can be made to a "timeshift" experience. So ... i almost never get to see new movies at home. With BR renting movies will come to an end for me for good. I mean, it´s always the same, a few bad people ruin it for the big mass of people and all the studios, government, whoever is able to do is to make the non bad people suffer with their restrictions Cube Edited by - cubesnake on 7/24/2008 5:00:02 AM

well the point isnt games or not it can be done as easily with movies on BRD, and it will be. and people wont balk at buying them just like they havent balked at buying the PS3 and GTA4. I do expect DVD to live on, it cannot be protected and the upscaled widescreen versions look plenty good to most people, the quality of HD isnt yet drastically improved enough to motivate most people to switch, but this game is being played long term and over the long term DRM will win out.
I expect DVD to live on just because of the amount of movies and TV shows that don't have masters worth putting on Blu-ray anymore. If companies release subpar transfers on Blu-ray they'll kill the format because people will look at them versus the DVD and go there isn't a difference. Plus DVD, unlike VHS, is playable in your Blu-ray player so it doesn't require having multiple players lying around.
Hi Mike, just wanted to take this opportunity to ask you if Girlvana 2 will ever be released on Blu-ray? I have just finished watching half of Girlvana 3 on Blu-ray and there's an HD trailer for Girlvana 2 on it which kinda wet my appetite! I don't wanna buy it on DVD though if it will come out in HD. Is it really true that you are gonna release older stuff on Blu-ray in the future? Somehow I doubt this but I would very welcome it of course.
It really depends on what the market wants. The numbers are strong for our recent Blu-ray releases but it's kind of assumed that unless it's a blockbuster that you simply must see in HD, people probably won't "re-buy" porn titles that they already have on standard DVD. I could be wrong of course.
