Heheh. I haven't seen it yet but if it's in the same style of her other movies, I know what you mean. You can't go "ah they fuck in DP, she gets her cheeks smaked, etc" There's just too much happening all the time!! It's a tornado of hot disorderly filths!

Okay... I have set a new personal record with this movie:
54 pages of notes

I have even had to set up an interview with Mason tomorrow to get some questions answered...

This movie is simply so far beyond the work in her other movies...

I am going to use the same word again: "wow".

Don't misunderstand me, but why? Why the need for that many notes? Why the need to ask questions? And what kind of questions?

Again, don't misunderstand me. I am only curious about your general modus operandi, about the "goals" of your reviews (if they can be called that — again, don't misunderstand this) and about your theoretical/methodological background.

Please do realize that this is coming from a guy who made an analysis of 600+ pages of a single film, working with data which exceeded 10000 pages. And from a guy who is not interested much at all in reviews of any kind, except as secondary sources within a historical research project.

I hope this movie will have some foot-fetish stuff in it.

Btw, when will Mason use Rodney Moore in one of her movies? ;-)

Walter,

The trick with this movie was that Mason wrote a great story and she wrote it from deep within herself - the entire movie is a cluefest giving away what goes on inside Mason's head.

Since there is an undeniably large fascination with Mason (partially because she keeps herself shrouded in mystery) and due to the anticipation for this release, I didn't want to miss a golden opportunity to shine a light on Mason a little and open her up a little for her fans.

I hope I accomplished that.

I really hope you read the review (especially the second section where I analyze the movie and Mason) and tell me what you think.

It will be very interesting to me to hear the feedback to a) this review/article, and then b) the movie itself. I hope there are a lot of discussions about Mason this week -we certainly have our single biggest insight into her that we have ever had.

What is this?
This whole review sounds like a shill!

Get someone objective to review this stuff. Not the best friend of the director.

This whole issue of Selena's reviews is discussed in the Review: American Gunk thread. I strongly suggest you go read it before making any more judgement calls, ReasonableMan.

Too bad there's only one interracial scene in this movie. Should have been more. Well, at least I'm glad it's with Selena. I hope her other movies will include more interracial scenes.

Btw, of course this is not an objective review but that's oke, I love to read about this movie from Selena's point of view, nothing wrong with that.

This is ridiculous!

Let's get Uma Thurman to review Kill Bill!
That makes sense!

How can the Moderators allow a review to be submitted by someone who is actually in the movie?

Where is the integrity of Adultdvdtalk as an objective source of reviews?

I am not trying to get banned.
I just want objective reviews, which I don't feel can be accomplished by allowing actors to rate their own movies.

I didn't say anything about Ms. Silver's review for American Gunk. But she is actually in Mason's Sexual Disorder, and as such, I don't see why AdultDVDTalk would accept a review from her on this film.

This is for the good of AdultDVDTalk. Not some personal agenda.

OK class, come to order.

ReasonableMan, I've already pointed out where you can find the answer to your question. I have no desire to rehash the whole discussion that takes place inside the American Gunk thread; why don't you go read it for yourself? I'll be happy to entertain any comments you have after that. Fair enough?

Now let's be reasonable ReasonableMan ;-)

Selena is writing the movie from her point of view like every other reviewer does. I mean if you look at it that way then all reviews are subjective.

It's up to you if you want to buy the movie or not, I mean Selena writes a great review about it but I personally am still not sure if I will buy the movie because of the lack of interracial scenes. Remember one important thing: Never let a reviewer decide if you're gonna buy a movie or not.

O.K., this is starting to drive me a little nuts.

Why is it so hard to differentiate between a review and a Pick of the Week? The name Pick of the Week implies that the coverage of the movie will be positive, hence Pick of the Week!

It's like, if AVN gives a movie an Editor's Choice, you automatically assume the review will be positive. Do you immediately assume the AVN reviewer is a "shill?"
Or that AVN's reviews and awards are influenced by the number of ads a company places in the magazine? Or...wait a minute... bad comparison..

Selena has already stated that she does not consider herself a "reviewer" in the truest sense of the word. Her role is to give a "heads-up" to movies she feels, as a fan, are worthy of a peek, and as a performer, she gives a unique inside perspective. Her incredibly detailed analysis of each movie is a great read and gives us a remarkable insight that other "reviewers" simply don't have.

So I think she should be encouraged, not second guessed.

Like Ramsey said all reviews are subjective. As long as the reviewer is honest about who they are, their connection to the movie, their likes and dislikes, then the review is a welcome addition to Adult DVD Talk. Selena could not be any clearer about who she is, what she likes and her connections to the productions. You don't want the perspective of a star who was on the set and in the movie, then fine don't read the review. There are thousands of others. And as has already been stated in this thread there will be more reviews of Sexual Disorder from a consumer perspective.
Don't blame the moderators. I approve the reviews submitted to Adult DVD Talk. You want to take issue with the reviews here please feel free to email me instead of ruining this thread.
Thanks for your concern, but Selena's inside view is for the good of Adult DVD Talk. It is clearly appreciated and enjoyed by many readers. Adult DVD Talk is about the communication between the industry and the consumer. Since she first joined the forum Selena has helped achieve this goal.
If you think Adult DVD Talk lacks integrity then please see our Links page, there are many sources for reviews. I, for one, am proud of the eclectic collection of reviewers here.

Sorry to derail this thread further, especially since Mason's Sexual Disorder looks to be a very interesting movie.

You little shit stirrer ! hahahaha...

Remember everyone , emaciated trolls die of hunger .

Oh , and yeh so I haven't bought any of the discs Selena's reviewed . But that doesn't make all her hard work worthless , she gives a fine insight into these DVDs and her own behind the scenes involvement . I for one derive great pleasure from her reviews ( and the prospect of a new MLyons marathon on the horizon is great news too ) .

Here's hoping she doesn't let a vocal minority discourage her from writing more !

Well, I'll ignore the idiotic swerve this thread took a few posts back and just say I'm grabbing this one today, so I can watch it, so I can check out Selena's extensive and (from my little peek so far) fascinating report, and then toss in my own thoughts. If you can't figure out the virtue of having an articulate and engaged porn starlet analyze her own participation in what is the most talked-about porn being made, and analyze the participation of her peers, then maybe you should find another vice. Selena's "view" is a welcome perspective from "deep inside" the Flesh Factory. Who isn't curious about how these movies come together, or what the players really think about them? I would think that kind of info would make a potential buyer vastly more informed and able to decide what they wanted to see. Since "full disclosure" is made, there's no ethical breach. So, again, as before, what's the problem?

[Rhetorical question. Anyway, back to the topic at, ahem, hand!]

I’m making this post as a person who first read a lot of the reviews here on ADT, for several months before I discovered the message board. And I read the reviews to decide whether I wanted to watch a film or not, and to find out if there was anything objectionable in it, so I could avoid it (and there are films I have passed on because of the detailed reviews, they are a big help in this regard.)

When I was checking different reviews for a single film, I was constantly switching between this site, Rogreviews and RAME. I didn’t take any time to figure out the background of the reviewers; I just wanted info on the film. I assumed that they were either longtime critics, or porn fans.

And that’s the issue here, once one of Selena’s reviews gets put in the general mix with all the other 5000+ reviews here on this site. A less-than-knowledgeable reader could be puzzled by her perspective in her write-ups, when she is making references to working for a studio, or with a particular person. The reader could click on the link to the “Selena Silver Pick of the week”, and get the background info on her, but if they are like I was, they just want film info, not reviewer info.

Check out the 3 reviews for "I Love it Rough 2", and you'll get an idea of what I mean.

ReasonableMan Wrote:

ReasonableMan has a valid point to make. If a person is in a movie (any movie, not just porn films), I have some misgivings about their being able to rate the movie with a decent level of objectivity. I don’t have any problem with Selena posting a write-up of her take on the film; even Hollywood actors do publicity tours of their films, they are expected to get out the good word on their work, though no one expects them to say anything negative about it.

I believe M. Lyons handled this kind of situation well. After he visited Elegant Angels studios, he posted a disclaimer at the beginning of any review he did of their movies. And this was only after a 1 day visit. I think an equivalent disclaimer would be useful, when Selena’s reviews get put in the general mix, there could be a clear disclaimer at the beginning (not a link) about what her involvement was with the film, or the studio. At least with Mason’s Sexual Disorder, she does state at the start of her write-up that she was in it, and that she would be commenting on the movie from this viewpoint.

Renee,

How could you read this paragraph in the background section of Selena's review (which is the very beginning of the review) of I Love it Rough 2 and not know she's a pornstar who's worked with Brandon:

I'm sorry, but even without clicking over to an inside view it's quite clear. Selena has now gone to ridiculous lengths to make clear her perspective in each review. So I don't understand why anyone feels the need to keep questioning this.

We may be focusing on Selena, but the larger question is how do you know whether to trust any reviewer? A question worthy of discussion and debate, but perhaps not at the expense of Selena's thread about Mason's latest opus?

Steph,

How could I not know that she is a porn star? Because when I was new to reading reviews, like I was 6 months ago, I couldn't possibly keep all the names of the actresses straight, there are so many of them, plus a lot of them go by different names. It is easy to know that she is a porn actress if you log onto the message board at least once a week, so sure, that would cut down on any confusion. But like you've said in another thread, you have 40,000 hits a day on the reviews. Any idea how many different people visit the message board each day, so we can compare?

When I first started reading reviews here, I specifically looked up ones written by women. To be honest, if I had come across this Selena review above six months ago, I would wonder why a woman reviewer had to give Brandon Iron a blowjob, just to review one of his films, when the other women like Yogagrrl, Dumblonde or Lindi don't ever mention things like that.

Like I said above, I don't have any problems with her doing reviews; I only want to see the confusion factor cut down for people who are new to porn and who aren't familiar with all the different people who work in the industry.

Skronker,
Do you mean to suggest that we women reviewers get to hook up with the male porn star of our choice? This is highly relevant; just today on this thread here, I was asked by Stella, the latest Russian porn-star-to-be from Shameless' agency, what it is like to work with Manuel Ferrara? Naturally, I would like to give Stella a definative answer, if this could be arranged.

For those who are interested, here is my take on:

Mason's Sexual Disorder.

It's only the second 4.5 star rating I've given. It was a hard rating to arrive at. There's some stuff here that, while not being truly strokable for me, was nevertheless fascinating and thought provoking to watch. There was plenty there that WAS pure stroke factor, however, and in my assessment, is Mason's best work to date in this regard. Katrina Kraven's scene simply blew me away, and Maggie Star's wasn't far behind. I believe Mason is growing and expanding her horizons, and as always I'm anxious to see where she goes next.

I wish to congratulate Mason on a superb flick with very hot sex. Had a very Dark feel to it. Wish to see more women getting the chance to deliver the goods in the gonzo realm, although they are growing in number. I'm not 100% on having female perfomers film their own series, although I love being proved wrong. Major congrats to Platinum X for giving Mason a forum for her sick twisted mind, and to the others who passed on her-what the hell were you thinking? I do not know if she's a pain to work with but to my customers who buy her shit up, they'd say it was worth it.

I just saw this movie, and I have to admit that it wasn't my thing. The rough sex just doesn't do it for me. My fiancee was absolutely horrified. I don't think she was happy that I rented it. Nothing against Mason, Selena Silver, or anyone else involved with the film and those who do like it, but it wasn't for me. I hope I didn't offend anyone, because I don't mean to. Different strokes for different folks. By the way, I thought that Selena's scene was the best.

The sex in this was not really my thing either, but it's good to see a female director behind the lens. And Julie Knight is so sassy; she looks like Maggie Gylenhaal (sp?) of Secretary fame. The thing that got to me was that there seemed to be this almost apologetic tone i.e. for a woman to like hardcore she must have a "disorder" And I didn't care for the misogynistic crap at the start. I can totally see what Mason was doing here but unfortunately it doesn't work. I really like the idea of crossing gonzo with a storyline though. Hopefully in her next movie Mason can inject more intimacy into the scenes. And maybe the woman in the film would like to recieve as well as give a little head sometimes? I've noticed in a lot of hardcore stuff the female stars never get their breasts or pussy licked; it's as though that's too softcore. This in turn loses a lot of chemistry and intimacy that's needed in any sex scene (no matter how tame or hardcore) to make it really intense and meaningful. Oh and we totally need Julie to do a lesbian scene, perhaps with Mason herself!!

If you want a good Julie Night girl-on-girl scene check out Girl Crazy by Jonni Darkko. Julie and Ashley Blue wrestle each other on the floor and both cum out winners. Nice use of toys too.

I also recently bought Mason's Sexual Disorder. In my opinion it has the strongest cast of any Mason feature. Not a weak link in the bunch. I know it's not entirely a stroke flick but I thought the middle scenes with Katrina Kraven, Maggie Starr and Selena Silver were immensely strokable. I was already familiar with the last two but now I'm gonna have to see more with Miss Kraven. I also liked seeing Mason's make-up artist friend again in the behind-the-scenes. She cracks me up.

This is exactly how I feel. I'm not knocking the movie itself. I'm just more into intimacy and passionate sex when it comes to porn. I don't regret renting this movie. Both my fiancee and I actually talked about renting a hardcore porn film for quite some time, and since I'm interested in both Selena and Mason this movie naturally was on the top of my list for hardcore porn. I think it's a good film for this type of porn, but it's just not my type of porn. Like I said in my earlier post on this thread, to each their own.

Thank you all for your responses to “Sexual Disorder.” If anything, this is my favorite part of the movie making process. I love having the opportunity to engage in a discourse between the reactions and feelings my movies inspire, and the actual ideas that went into their conception and creation.

There are a couple of points I would like to make:

I am deeply frustrated by the references made by Kitty Kat and Myload to passion and intimacy. Intimacy is about abandonment, letting go, and sharing the deepest, personal aspects of self. It doesn’t always need to be contextualized in tender expressions of affection. The connection and chemistry between Manuel, Denis and Katrina was the most beautiful, soulful, intimate exchange of sexuality I have ever seen. When Manuel had Katrina wrapped in his arms, the ferocity of their locked eyes, their kissing, and intimate moments was awe inspiring. Afterwards, I couldn’t understand how she did not fall in love with him. It may not be what is traditionally characterized as intimacy, but it touched everyone's spirit who was present on set that day. Katrina is a marvel, and I’m so grateful that she granted me that window into her soul.

It is difficult for me to grasp, when there is so little genuine chemistry and intimacy in the tamer elements of this industry---when girls are so often treated like pieces of meat; holes to be routinely penetrated, double penetrated and triple penetrated---that people could respond to my movie by suggesting there is a lack of humanity or intimacy. Jessica and Mickey G, Mr Pete and Maggie, the total abandonment and exhaltation of Julie Night in the last two scenes; the talent in this movie gave so much of themselves, and shared their sex so freely with each other and you the audience. Whatever your reaction to Sexual Disorder, a lack of passion and intimacy is not one I can have much sympathy with.

Kitty-kat said:

The thing that got to me was that there seemed to be this almost apologetic tone i.e. for a woman to like hardcore she must have a "disorder"

My intention was never to rationalize or justify my own, or the actresses, sexual proclivities as a clinical, mental disorder. I was trying to say that the free expression of their feelings represent disorder, chaos and freedom, in an otherwise, too frequently structured and ordered society that preconditions both men and women to constrain their hearts and sexuality.

Kitty-kat said:

And maybe the woman in the film would like to recieve as well as give a little head sometimes? I've noticed in a lot of hardcore stuff the female stars never get their breasts or pussy licked; it's as though that's too softcore.

You know, I’ve tried this, and it just doesn’t work. Many times I have edited these sequences out. Pussy eating is something I rarely recieve in my personal life because it never compliments the type of aggressive sex I adore. Rather than lend intimacy, I see cunnilingus as beating around the bush, when I could be getting gagged or fucked, or physically consumed by cock. This is not to say that I do not occasionally enjoy a fine glass of wine followed by a good tongue job, however, for me it is never an intense sexual activity and not suited to the type of scenes I do. I completely understand the need to express reciprocal pleasure giving among the sexes, however, I’m not going to include this in my movies for mere political correctness.

I agree. Sexual Disorder is not for everybody. However, inspite of my enthusiastic disassociation from any connection Sexual Disorder might have to the “couples” porn genre, I know from the feedback I have already received, that this movie can be enjoyed, and is, by both men and women alike all over the country.

What I wanted more than anything was to tell a story with the least amount of set up and direction, so that Sexual Disorder would be devoid of the imbecillic pretensions of feature porn. This is at heart, a small story about love, obsession, and sexual freedom. No more, no less.

Hope that helps. :)

I really appreciate all of the responses, and encourage any and all feedback. Thanks!

Hi Mason,
Thanks for the response. I hope you take my criticism as constructive only; there was a lot to like about this movie and I wouldn't have bothered to post if it didn't make me feel anything. I agree that Katrina has the best scene. She's a hottie! I hope you continue to use her in future films. I guess we're at opposite ends with our thoughts - you mention that feature films make the girls seem like holes just to be plugged, whereas often I feel gonzo does this. But I guess that comes down to a matter of personal taste. I do like features because they have higher production values and beautiful stars but I agree with you in that they are often very boring, with stilted sex. I really love seeing more women behind the camera lens, such as yourself, but it feels like the sex is still very "male" orientated. The female characters you presented to us were very strong and I'd love to see them dominate the men more and get them to do things to pleasure them. Julie is amazing but I was a little dissapointed when she spent so long with all those cocks in her face. The interesting thing was that the story with you and Julie was the most intense part of the movie, even though you never see your face, and then at the end there was no consumation. That would have been so amazing to have. Although I know you do not want yourself on camera, it could have been a fake Mason! XXoo

I also have to add that I agree that Katrina's scene is... it was transcendent. I mean, it was one of those very few sex scenes that really steps beyond the eye candy, the checklists, and the "pay rates" and touches on something truly primal----wanton even. It was a fabulous scene, and thanks especially to Katrina and Manuel for really pulling out all the inhibitions and just enjoying each other so that we could enjoy you both. One of the best sex scenes I've seen this year in my opinion.

Mason's funny.

I get this picture soon Mason, plus Dirty Trixxx, so will let you know from a first-time Mason viewer what I think of your most famous and most recent. Incidentally, have you been watching the world cup of Rugby? I seem to remember us being both fans of the masterful physique of Wendel Sailor. Now could he dish out some rough sex or what?

Rugby star + Selena Silver as Germaine Greer = scene from Mason's Sexual Disorder II. What say you to that?

Ultrasiet:

Congratulations on Australia beating tournament favorites, New Zealand, 22-10, in the semi-finals!!!! Unfortunately, because of my roomie, Graham, I will have to root for England! ;) You are right, Wendel Sailor is hot!

As far as your choice for Dirty Trixxx, please, please, please, get Dirty Trixxx 2. It is so much better than the first, and basically scene 3 is where Sexual Disorder began.

See you in the chatroom!

Kartrina Kraven with Manuel and Denis Marti is my favorite sex scene of the year. She is so amazingly ON IT with those guys. And yes, for me, what makes this movie diffferent from other gonzo is THE FEELING --- there's an explosion of intimacy, not only between Julie and the camera/Mason/viewer (a real "third eye/psyche-cunt/3CCD chip" menage, oooooweeee!) but in all reality the palpable sense that the talent was having an orgasmic adventure beyond the usual space/time continuum, and willing to take us all along for the ride down the dark, dark, wet, throbbing, red-walled superhighway of luvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv, baby, yeah!
As someone once said of Jean-Luc Godard's "Weekend," it's a movie in love with its own body odor." Smell the muthafuckin' glove, people!

Every director (or any other artist) has to decide whom they're willing to leave behind. (You can't please everyone.) By the same token, it's not fair to expect the audience to substitute the passion that went into creating a film for the passion they (don't) feel when they watch it.
This alone should make Disorder a landmark piece of smut. If most gonzo fails because they try to do to little, most features fail because they try to do way, way too much. Hopefully by trying to engage the viewer with more than the bare flesh while avoiding the "pretensions of feature porn" you've opened a door to a new way of getting us off.

I basically agree with this, except for 1 thing. I don't think it is new. Maybe the particular way in which Mason is trying to it , is. I can't tell. I haven't seen any of her movies. But many pornographers have tried/still try to do this in their own ways, which makes for some very varied, interesting viewing. Of course, the trouble is that there aren't many pornographers in porn, relatively speaking. There are a lot of businessmen, though.

Oh yes, I know. They should be both.
