If a person had been infected with HIV, but was not yet testing positive on a DNA test, it would be because their viral load was still very low, and therefore, they were still at a low risk of transmitting the virus to someone else.

By decreasing the amount of time between tests, we would be decreasing the amount of time that a person would have a higher viral load (and therefore be a higher risk of transmitting to someone else) when they'd be working with other talent.

Thanks for jumping in Tricia. I can't imagine this is an easy topic for you to discus but you are one of the only people in this community that really knows what they are talking about in real world terms. Thanks again.

Max - thanks for understanding.

It is my close personal experience with a situation similar to this that has made me WANT to desperately talk about it.

At the same time, I don't have the all the facts of this particular situation, so I don't want to speak about details until I DO have all the facts. Because of my unique perspective, I am both afraid and hoping that people will take my thoughts a little more to heart.

All I can say is that for Laura (and Darren - and any of the other girls who right now aren't sure if they do or don't have HIV), is that no matter what, your life is NOT over. This is not an easy to disease to have, but it is one that you can life with and still have a full lifespan.

Thanks for clearing that up Tricia. My point however, wasn't so much that increased testing is not practical, but rather, that much of the debate here seems to be focused on prevention. While it is right and reasonable that debate does focus on prevention, I think it is somewhat negligent to not attempt to put into place better systems for containment should the unfortunate circumstance of multiple trasnmissions take place, as seems to have occured here.

IF there was a register of scenes and people exposed to possible infections in those scenes, it would make containment a much faster process, and in so doing, make the industry safer in the event of a widespread incident. I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts on this, and those of other industry insiders.

Lara Roxx Diagnosed as HIV-Positive
By: Scott Ross
04-15-2004

CHATSWORTH, Calif. - As feared, one of the women who worked with Darren James has tested HIV-positive. Lara Roxx, one of three Canadians in the first-generation, has just been confirmed positive by the Adult Industry Medical Healthcare Foundation (AIM).

Roxx, who is either 18 or 19-years-old, performed in a mini-gang bang scene with Darren James, Mark Anthony, Maxxx Black on March 24. Anthony and Black performed a double anal with Roxx, as part of that scene. Black is now quarantined as a member of a new line of the virus.

Darren James Tests HIV-positive

Black has since performed with Rayveness, who is now considered in second-generation of this new line of the virus and quarantined as well.

Roxx had only been in the adult industry for three months. Her scene with James and Anthony was her first double anal.

Her agent Daniel Perreault, the agent who handles the women for the Eromodel Group, told Roxx not to come to Los Angeles on this trip, saying he didn't believe she was ready yet. She came anyway.

In another development in James' line of the virus, John Strong has been identified as a person who worked with Banesca, one of the women in the first-generation of that line. Strong has been placed on the quarantine list.

Maybe it's a little naive on my side but I feel the company who shoots the movie is also responsible for the health of the performers. They should make sure all the tests are up to date and up to the standard and they should also make sure the performers are not put into any risk.

I believe most of them do that already Ramsey. The performer in question was current, and if I read everything correctly tested every three weeks instead of the usual four and had a perfect record prior to this.

Indeed. Many fans seem ready to hang Darren, yet there is no evidence he's infected anybody (female->male infection is not unusual) or brought the HIV virus to the US porn industry. They only apparent fact so far is that he was the first to test positive.

I no longer remember the Marc Wallice chronology, but I know Tricia endured a lot of accusations, and that the real culprit (Marc) was the third or fourth HIV+ to have been discovered. In a week or two things may be clearer in today’s situation and initial assumptions may prove embarrassing.

That’s true, but not easy to accept. Jessica Dee worked with Darren on the same day as Lara, and she probably did an anal scene: her state of mind I cannot imagine (I understand she’s gotten a negative result now). Others worked with Darren as recently as a week ago and won’t sleep for a while.

I haven’t seen lists of who Lara has worked with. Is she cooperating with AIM? Her contacts graph is as important as Darren’s.

As a long time lurker, I've never been moved to post, until now. Anyone who's spent time in Brazil knows the problems with HIV and a host of other STDs. What makes Brazil different? My point being, would you send a group of guys to South Africa to have unprotected anal sex with a bunch of girls then cut them loose back into the talent pool?? There has to be a portion of blame attributed to someone in this mess.
Just my 2cents.

Where did you find these values and what the HIV rate is out of control in Brazil?
Not exists a law forcing the use of condoms in the production of porn, but in most of the productions they are used because the actors don't work exclusively with movies.

There is a law, it is mandatory to use condoms in porn productions in Brazil. Unless you saying many people are lying or completely misinformed.

Brazil's HIV stats are available online.

This law doesn't exist. The one that happens is that in the great majority of the Brazilian productions is used preservatives because the artists are recruited among the that work in the "night" (escort girls, stripers, etc).
here an example of movie condoms-out . Sem Camisinha

I didn't find any statistics that show that the AIDS is out of control in Brazil, but on the contrary , and enters esteemed 170,000 prostitutes the infection rate is of 6% and no 3x1 as you have informed.

Well then many people have been spreading a falsehood because I have read on many sites that it is a law in Brazil that condoms must be used in adult productions.

how do you know this law doesn't exist? Are you in the Brazilian porn industry?

The HIV rate among Brazil's sex workers is very high - as u say most of the girls who perform in XXX movies come from the sex trade. If you believe it not be that high please post a link to some statistics that show a different story.

Look here, you guys(It's from 2001):

Click here I can't find anything that says it has passed, but it looks like it was on track to pass.

This next article contains this quote: Click here Brazil has South America's highest AIDS rates - almost 238,000 documented cases since 1980, a number far lower than actual infection rates. Many more Brazilians refuse to seek AIDS testing and die from AIDS-related illnesses that are never classified as such.

This one is much more to the point. It is from 1995. I'm sure things aren't better, but maybe: Click here

These are the first few things I found with a very perfunctory google search. I'm sure more could be found.

J.

Edit: Through subsequent reading I have learned that apparently Brazil has lowered their AIDS rate significantly, through education mainly. This is becoming moot.

I posted a link that informs that 6% of the prostitutes are affected , that is high, but not 33% as you say. I don't work in Brazilian porn industry, nor I like made movies, if you not have observed I am Brazilian and I live here in Brazil.
For your information it exists yes a project of law , that intends to force all production of explicit sex to be made condoms use, that is, pictures, videos, magazines, etc, national and imported . I twist for that this is not approved.

Well, I'm actually having trouble figuring out exactly what you're trying to say. I'm not trying to be rude at all, I'm just really having to piece your words together into some kind of a guess.

I realize it's a language barrier, and there is not much to be done outside of a translator, or someone smarter than I(which is a very feasible option), but anyway.

Yeah, I can't find anything that says it has passed, so it very well could have been defeated in your Congress.

I have read that all pornos must have the public service message about using condoms at the beginning of the movie, but they may have scrapped the other part of the bill that mandates the use of condoms in said movie.

I guess you would know since you live there.

Thanks.

Brazil - 600,000 HIV cases. 170 million people
U.S.A - 1,000,000 HIV cases. 270 million people

In both countries the statistics are concentrated more among the poor and disenfranchised and yet basic math illustrates that HIV infection rates are slightly HIGHER in the U.S. The Brazilian government distributes anti-HIV meds for free while in the U.S they are more than the payment on a BMW.

Also bear in mind that these numbers aren't per year. These are the TOTAL number of cases since testing began in 1983. By way of comparison, more than 500,000 Americans will die of Cancer THIS YEAR.

I'm not trying to minimize the magnitude of what is happening here, just the hysteria.

Just my two cents.

Ok I did some research, carioca is right about some things, Brazil has done a very good job in the fight against HIV/AIDS. You can see Mike Quasar's figures show that.

BUT pornographers who head down there aren't working with the average Brazilian female. As carioca said in another post the girls who do porn movies also work as prostitutes.

The HIV rate in female sex workers in San Paolo is 18%. If even half that % exists in the talent pool that an American porn company would hire from - well, you shoot 20 girls, 2 are HIV positive.

Yes, it owes this having a language barrier here.
The one that I want is to object are 2 information posted by Mutt.
1 - it is legal to do movies without condoms use. It still was not approved in the Congress law forcing to this (here the things walk very slowly).
2 - The HIV rate not is out of control in Brazil. For the the one that I could find, in absolute numbers, the Brazil doesn't have such larger numbers than the USA (Brasil=257,780 at(or +) 600,000; USA=886,575, data of 2002) of course relatively USA has them the larger population 290,000,000; Brazil 178,000,000.

And this article from 2001 suggests that Brazil might have a law making condoms compulsory in the porn industry. It sounds as if 3 years ago they were heading that way.

from BBC.com

*******************************************

Brazil Uses Porn to Fight AIDS

By Tom Gibb in Sao Paulo

A villa outside Sao Paulo has been turned into a set for a pornographic movie by the Brazilian company, Sexxxy videos.

But the company is also the latest recruit in the fight against Aids.

In these films, condoms are standard props.

The company is also shooting a special message about Aids to put at the start of each of its videos - something that the Brazilian congress will soon make compulsory for all adult movies.

Co-opting and regulating the pornographic industry is just the most explicit example of Brazil's aggressive anti-Aids programme, which is making many experts point to the country as a model for elsewhere in the world.

Mutt, Carioca is saying that the law has not been passed yet that requires condoms to be used.

The safe sex messages in Brazilian movies are required by law.

Thank's Mike Quasar, I am very slow in my researches and in my answers.
Yes, while in the whole brazil the HIV rate in female sex workers is smaller, in some cities as São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro she is larger.
" Faça sexo seguro . Use camisinha (Make safe sex. Use condom) ". This is the message.

You're welcome, Valjean4876. I think those were some of AVN's best articles on this situation so far. They cut through the rumors and misconceptions and give people a better grasp on what's really going on.
