And basically every regular card here also functions as a debit card. The prepaid cards are for people who have bad credit due to unfortunate events in the past, wouldn't get a regular card but still need one to buy stuff online where CC is the only method of payment. Or travelling. But still, you'll do more business with Germans if you offer other methods of payment, which most of the billing services already do btw. --- I almost forgot (had to go catch some sleep last night):John, I'm sure that you have good reasons for your opinion on this, even if it, as you mentioned yourself, collides with personal beliefs. Of course, if you try to get your foot in the door, it's very hard to develop the long-term strategies I was alluding to because you simply don't have the resources. I'm in a priviledged position in this discussion, as it's not my future that is at stake. But how do you want to secure a border if not by shutting it down and opening it only for what you want to pass through? And if the control mechanisms you want are implemented, be it the electronic border (most likely government-controlled) or the proprietary format owned by cable companies, what do you think will happen? Do you see a bright future for the kind of content you want to create? Maybe I have a distorted view on this from the other side of the Atlantic, but to me it seems that neither the government nor the big companies in your country are very porn-friendly and are not likely to change that in the future. |

| Prophit Member 378 Posts 1/07 | I'm from Germany and I have a credit card which I use mostly for porn. Before I had one I wasn't able to join any websites nor buy DVDs from the US so I stole a lot of stuff. Credit cards are definitely not as common as in the US in most other countries of the world. It's a very egocentric view to expect other people to use "your" methods for payment. I had to go through hoops to get one but not everybody is crazy enough about porn like me and gets a credit card. And many people don't want to use it on the net because it is the unsafest payment method of them all (matter of fact my credit card number has been stolen about 6-7 times already, I've never had to pay any of it but it tells you a lot about how safe it is to use credit cards).25 gigs is more than enough to hold a full porn feature. Matter of fact all but one (Pirates 2) porn movies so far have been single layer discs. If your calculation is correct and the production really only amounts to $3 per disc then I must say it's a joke porn Blu-rays are still being sold for 40-50 Dollars! I think the industry is missing a great opportunity here. Blu-ray porn is really something that could get people to pay for porn again. But 50 Dollars for a disc? No thanks. | EricW Member 34 Posts 6/09 | Basically I can’t find much I like. As mentioned above, tattoos and piercings. But also cum shots, (for the life of me I can’t understand what is erotic about that, and we have recaps yet.) endless close-ups, gaping butt holes, spread asses and pussies, spitting, fake boobs, huge things being forced up butts. I know some people love all that, but it leaves me cold. One of the things I do like is spanking, but when you go to the spanking sites it’s always some snotty 15 year old that lost her homework and once the spanking stops it’s all over. What’s wrong with a women coming home horny as hell and begging for a spanking? (I could easily write a 45-minute script based on that, I have some experience.) What’s wrong with making love instead of just fucking? Too much porn for me is all the same, if you’ve seen one you’ve pretty much covered it. There are things I like, Kristina Rose’s Dirty Girl has some great scenes, and I joined Jay Sin’s site and found a bunch of stuff I liked. I think my favorite is Jenny Hendrix and Chelsea Rea milk enema thing. I’m sort of trending towards girl girl stuff because to me it’s more tender and erotic. I know there’s exceptions to that. I like a lot of the first parts of the Bang Bros. stuff, before the guy shows up. Belladonna has some great scenes. Yes, Blue Ray is way overpriced. |

| Jeff Mullen Member Hall of Famer -Time to get out 219 Posts 1/08 | While shooting the other day I heard about the big press conference they had regarding how filthy our industry is and that they singled out Not the Bradys XXX in the report and are going to demand condom usage in the adult movie industry. So during a lunch break on set I asked one of my female actresses to pass me a condom and she handed me a bottle of ketchup. The point is that the market dictates free enterprise and it is rarely beneficial for a government agency to intervene in the marketplace and each man or woman has the right to enter our industry, not enter it or decide to leave it. We don't run sweat shops, force talent into performing or any of that talk. The sad part is that organizations like the Pink Cross (which on the surface sounds good but is probably not as truly well-intentioned as they would like us to believe) will probably win because in a couple of years or less there will be very little new production taking place if people keep getting porn for free. Wake up and smell the condiments. |

I agree -- I hate the ides of women with tattoos and breast piercings as well as large holes in the ear lobe. I can live with a couple small tattoos but those women with large gaudy tattoos turn me off. I guess everyone has their own opinion. I even remember a judge on a Girl Next Door contest on Playboy commenting that tattoos didn't help any woman in the looks department, so I am not alone. |

| Clay Member 216 Posts 8/00 | Please start making more high resolution titles and selling them at reasonable prices. I am sure this will not solve the problems of rampant IP theft but it may provide a market for products with customers that want high quality video. The current approach to sell Blueray versions at twice the price of a DVD is simply not going to work. |

And Blu-ray can't help with this either. The common thing pirates do with Blu-rays is reencode them to single layer DVD size. So they make a 4 gb file out of a 20+ gb disc. The end result can no longer be called HD but that doesn't matter to them since they watch it anyway. |

For example (in the MILF catergory) look at Mrs Saskia from Naughty America. Now she has had a boob job done, but the size of them suits her body size/shape, plus the added bonus of no tatts. I look at Raylene now - beautiful woman, but the tatts I'm not a fan of. Just like Kylie Ireland - I agree life has made her kinkier, but now with the piercings and tatts on her arm, I cannot say I'm a fan of her recent work. Now there's many of us out there who like all different exotic things and fetishes, but then there's just some of us who like plain old vanilla. Even if there were no piracy, there is no stopping college kids from uploading their home videos to free hosting sites -- I expect this to become part of the college dorm culture -- college couples watching porn together and uploading their own sex scenes to compete in a "are we hot porn or are we not" sort of thing. The best looking girls I have EVER SEEN fuck on camera, were normal college-aged girls with supermodel bodies/faces and perfect tits, who had boyfriends eager to record and upload his conquests and sexual prowess. I agree with Clay, the key is to leverage EVERY ASPECT of Blu-ray to give porn consumers reason to buy something they can't find on pirate sites or amateur sites. It starts with shooting not just in 1080p, but also shooting much prettier/younger women (less flaws to see in HD) and properly lit with good cameras (so much of the "HD" stuff available on Blu-ray still looks like shit because they play with the color/saturation to hide the fact the girls aren't much to see in high-def). All the mass-produced crap porn will go away because it can't compete with piracy and amateurs. The scenes also need to be less generic and more "professional grade porn" -- the best makeup and outfits, gangbangs, double-penetration, deep-throating huge cocks, the kitchen sink. It needs to be stuff that amateur college kids can't compete with because they don't have the resources or the desire and skill to perform the most difficult sex acts. Then you need to add lots of multiple camera angles for the scenes -- capture it from every POV (including the guy's) and let the consumer choose how to watch it. Fill up an entire BD disc with a single scene -- this will make it much less practical to pirate. Then you need to add interactive content that can only be accessed via an account with the production company -- this kind of thing can't be pirated, but it adds a lot more overhead to the production. Let them login and download standard-def stuff like behind-the-scenes, outtakes, bloopers, director interviews, etc. So, to sum up: the problem with porn right now is there are no barriers to entry and a glut on the market of crappy porn made with marginal here-today-gone-tomorrow talent trying to compete with pirated or free amateur porn. There needs to be less (but better produced) porn made, fewer (but bigger) stars, and more features that consumers would pay money for. Edited by - randomizer on 8/25/2009 9:04:12 PM |

If porn abandons DVD, and goes Blu-ray only at Blu-ray prices, they will lose me as a customer altogether. If porn becomes more extreme and filled with circus-acts, they will lose me as a customer, as well. With few exceptions (e.g. Quasarman, Jules Jordan, William H... you guys know who they are), there are not enough talented people with the skills, finances and desire to up the game to "Blu-ray" standards. As far as more "younger girls" supposedly more flawless friendly to the harsher realities of Blu-ray, you do know that the MILF market is just about the hottest porn demographic going at the moment -- at least for those of us who actually pay for porn. Honestly, I have serious doubts that, people under 25 who have grown up with technology and porn for free on the Internet, will ever willingly pay for porn. As has been said, anything Blu-ray will be ripped and posted on the Internet, in standard Internet resolutions, codecs and formats -- effortlessly by 14-year-olds using consumer software There is no protection scheme, nor will there ever be, that will keep porn, or any other digital media, from being cracked and ripped. Ever. The only way to beat this (or at least control it), is to go after sites, individuals, endlessly file DMCR notices to remove copyrighted content, etc. Hell, I'd even support "denial-of-service" attacks on pirate sites if that's what it takes. I'm confident the industry will, ultimately, find new business models that will succeed. I don't think we have seen them yet. Leaving DVD would be a mistake IMHO. Raising prices on those of us who buy porn would also be a mistake. There is going to be a lot of pain, and a lot of porn producers who go by the wayside. The industry will contract until the best players are left, making the product we will pay for, at a sustainable output level using refined business models that will work. |
| Clay Member 216 Posts 8/00 | Any business plan based on competing against freely distributed low resolution porn or on preventing the sharing of data on the Internet is doomed. The industry has to look forward and not back. I will throw another idea on the heap. A fundamental challenge for the porn industry is coming up with original ideas that keep people interested in the sex and sets your content apart from others without going too far and turning off the viewer. It sounds like porn is becoming increasingly popular with women but I think the industry really is missing the mark for couples and women's porn. Studios are really struggling with identifying what will appeal to both men and women and to manage the content of a gonzo movie to be consistent with what their target audience is likely to want to see (regardless of whether it is 1 on 1 couples, gang bangs, or bondage). My spouse likes porn with solid anal, 2 on 1, or 3 on 1 action. She probably would not watch most Wicked/Vivid titles in favor of a Evil Angel/Jules Jordan type movie. Quite frankly, some women don't want to see poorly acted between sex filler any more than men do. Many popular standards in hardcore movies like spitting, fish hooking, ugly males, ATM, etc. do not appeal to women I have known. Similarly many themes like teasing, massage, toy play (that a woman would like), etc. cannot be found. I am sure that the challenge is to make something that appeals to enough people to make money. I suspect the other challenge is to market the product so that potential buyers who don't use ADT ever find your product. That being said, I think there are a lot of opportunities to make movies that hit the couples audience beyond the Wicked/Vivid territory. Movies could go the route of either a more sensual hard core slant or on a hard core style with a better balance of sex acts that are pleasurable to women. Edited by - clay on 8/25/2009 10:32:59 PM |
| DK Member 107 Posts 6/09 | While some of the posters in this thread deplore particular trends, such as porn featuring tattooed girls, there is a market of some size for every legal sort of porn, and, for porn producers, I think that niche opportunities abound. I think that it's a mistake to think that the principal threat to porn is internal (for example, use of girls with pierced clits alienating a large audience segment). As in many other aspects of life, paternalistic politicians and their government-employee minions are best positioned to impair the industry, and I'll be mighty surprised if they don't. |

| BigBobxxx Senior Member 2681 Posts 5/04 | A double-edged sword too, as copies that don't sell eventually have to be discounted heavily and sold in order to recoup out-of-pocket production costs. This competes with newer product and further erodes the ability to maintain a price structure that benefits everybody (producer, talent and workers, distributor, retailers and customers). Someday, some bright people are going to be able to economically replicate only the product they need, as they need it, for sale in the marketplace. I think technology will catch up and make this a reality. |

| nateglass Member I must break you 201 Posts 12/05 | If adult studios would take care of their content and treat it like an asset (and it's their only real asset) then they wouldn't have to worry about piracy, they could worry about a downturn in the economy, or ways to better deliver content online. But as it stands, most studios are lazy and apathetic and are waiting for things to just magically "get better". Waiting for someone else to invent a T1000 AI Synthetic android capable of hunting down and terminating pirated content. Or waiting for another internet company to come along promising them 20% of a nickel for their DVD rights. Here's my opinion: 1. We have oversaturated the market for years now. 2. We have retail stores that overpriced product. 3. We mislead the customer with deceptive practices. 4. We have inferior delivery methods online. 5. We have terrible foreign distribution so anyone outside of the US has to jump thru hurdles to get our DVDs. 6. We are lazy about controlling our content. 7. We'd rather be at a porn party getting a handjob from some hood rat than acting like a legitimate businessperson. 8. We've forgotten that at the end of the day the idea is to make the customer happy. Did I simplify it too much? |

I agree with most of your sediment especially the DVD/Blu-Ray issue. I think just because a technology is available and has applications doesn't mean it's the best choice now. Specifically, if the production costs associated with Blu-Ray is too high, why produce it on that format? Just like I the consumer is ultimately responsible for choosing to buy bad products, the industry is responsible for poor or miss timed choices in technology. There's probably a reason for the disappointing and slow sales in Blu-Ray related to, but beyond the general economy in that a lot of people don't want to buy expensive Blu-Ray players and esp. Blu-Ray movies. Although the prices have come down for Blu-Ray stuff, they are still very high. In a time when gasoline was/is around $3/gallon, people are going to choose gas over porn 99% of the time. That being said although I don't agree with the effectivity of the strategy and tactics you mentioned. Hasn't the RIAA & MPAA done this already, devoting millions of dollars and lots of time into combating piracy with negligible results? Piracy is like herpes, it's common in one form or another (60% US = HSV1) and will never go away. Didn't Apple create a more cost effective way to combat piracy with micropayment system for music (mp3s)? If you agree that these products are a commodity, then pricing the commodity at much lower price will allow easier access to some customers (i.e., Apple iTunes model). |

| user3x Member 14 Posts 2/08 | the economic downturn began in early 2007 when the housing boom went bust along with everything else including porn. personally I began renting and buying less and less in late '07.as we stand now most of what I watch is from the library of titles i purchased prior and have become very picky about what I purchase today. unemployment among 18-25 year old's is between 20-25% so there go your new customers.and when it looks like this recession is likely to turn into a depression, well,we don't need to tell the industry how much worse it's going to get. I believe that half the industry won't see the recovery.if you were getting paid $1200 per scene and now you hear of $700 per scene? $500 isn't too far behind. on top of that, now you have to compete with eastern European porn and the emerging Brazilian porn industry.even Argentina is now getting into the mix.in the 90's when we talked about porn everyone pointed to the valley and "private" in Europe.now, porn is global. Piracy.a big problem that is getting worse by the day.the ball is on the industry's court on this one. and you have to ask yourself, how much are you willing to spend each month to fight it? or how much are you willing to loose every month for doing nothing? sue, lobby, reduce prices? all at the same time? none? many options but very little action is being taken as we speak. in conclusion, when the economy recovers and piracy is contained or continues to grow, the industry will be different geographically and financially.the valley may be dethroned when is all said and done. $.99 per scene, $3.99 for a feature download? |

| user3x Member 14 Posts 2/08 | as a photographer I can tell you how cheap it is today to come up with a high end product with less than $2,000 including the camera.5-6 years ago you would have to spend $600 plus on a beauty dish.now you can make one for less than $30 and using your flash instead of expensive dedicated flash units.the DIY movement in photography that I have seen in the last 3 years is now making is way into video.so achieving the look of 30k worth of equipment with a few hundred dollars is now possible. the cost of talent will continue to decline because with less jobs available generally the lure of a few hundred dollars for less then half days work will flood the industry with talent thus making talent compete for whatever work is available for less money.this happening in every industry in this country.web cost is not a big deal, distribution won't be difficult or expensive. what I'm really trying to say is that the way that porn business is done today, will be nothing like it will be done 3-5 years from now.maybe $2.99/scene $7.99/feature sounds more like it.there's both downside and upside to this change.it's just a matter of who will adjust and who won't. I'm very excited to talk about this topic.counter points and ideas on this is of great benefit for the industry. |
