the past 2 years or so i pretty much leave my external HD on 24/7. every few weeks i'll shut it down for a few days (sometimes a week) to "give it a rest". is it safe to have it on and running that often or should i shut it down more often? i should also add that i don't access the external HD every single day either, there could be be 2 or even 3 days where i don't access it. any feedback from people much smarter than me would be appreciated, thanks.

I'm not sure power cycling has much effect on how long a drive lasts anymore. I think manufacturing tolerances and heat are your proper concerns. There's not much you can do about the first, besides read the reviews, so I suggest you concentrate on keeping your HD well ventilated.
