Hi,

sorry if the subject may not be correct but i didn´t know better how to describe it.

Haven´t you wondered too how this may work ?

You surf the net and too often you are on a site and there´s a link to a "sex service" site. If you look at the bannerlink in most of the times (at least over here) it offers service near to where you really live. How can that be ? Wouldn´t it mean that the service provider either gives away your (my) accessdata in order for the sexsite to create these localized banners or may the (ISP) be the source for those banners ?

any ideas ?

Every computer browsing the internet has an IP address. It's fairly trivial to determine the general region where the IP address is located based on a varfiety of data. Your internet service provider isn't giving specifics on you as a customer. They simply have a range of IP addresses assigned to them and using publicly available information about their assigned ranges their user's locales can be approximated.

hmm, so far so good but my ISP serves "countrywide". But the (sex-talk)links i mean are (supossedly) in the same city or near by region and that´s what i find odd

That would be the same like, lets say if it were possible to get the ip aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd, everywhere in america and yet if you log on you get a phonesexbanner thats so close you can feel the heat

I don't think any ISP's started out nationwide, so there's a good possibility that the information regarding your IP address range was obtained back when it was assigned to a local provider.

Alternately, it wouldn't take much investigation to derive the info looking at IP addresses of local businesses, at least here in the USA.

Routing tables might help too. After all, whoever set up the router generally knows where it is located. With enough routing info it's pretty easy to figure out where things are.

When we had our IP block assigned to us by AT&T it was listed with our physical address in ARIN. (We no longer have an IP block.)

my favourite ones are when they're personal ads for hot chicks, and it says they live in suburbs around here, but they're ALL asian. it makes me laugh. LOL.

You do a little experiment to get the idea of what is happening.

Go to www.dnsstuff.com

Look for a line there that shows your IP number:

Your IP: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
and
Near: Some_Town, Some State, United States
