Standard dvd player. The footage is just about 50 mins. of a couple, I'm selling the original(mini-DV tape) to HGV for editing and distribution, but the couple wanted a copy of the original footage for their own enjoyment. I had to order an A/V out to s-video type cable, and next comes a DVD recorder with the s-video inputs on the back. Found one at best buy last night, $125 bucks. Hoping I can find cheaper, but we'll see.[Link] |

Well, I have a Toshiba D-R410ku which has a 1394 input. The unit was about $100 but I don't know if they still sell them (Probably not). It's probably been about a year. Does the camera have a firewire output?

It does, but I've ordered the Sony A/V s-video cable, which plugs into the back of a lot of DVD recorders.[Link] |

^ You'd get better picture from a digital connection. It's probably barely noticeable but you do lose some signal with analog cables. The only reason I don't use 1394 to copy my home movies is I don't have the right cable and I'm too cheap to buy it. If you're doing this for business, you're going to want it to be as good as possible.[Link] |

Yep. I am in the same boat as you as far as not wanting to spend the money. Also there are several different I.link wires, some 4 post to 4, some 4 post to 6 post, and or 5, and eventually I'm sure I'll buy one, but probably not until I purchase my next computer. I'm just trying to get a copy to disc right now to give to the couple I filmed, as it is their first time they've been on camera, and don't want to have to pay in order to see the footage. I can't say as I blame them.[Link] |

I don't know your situation, but gonna throw this out there:
It might be cheaper and/or more practical to get (if you don't already own) a video card for your PC which has ports to receive A/V input or S-video input or digital input. Then connect your Sony camera to the computer and feed the video to your harddrive. Then create the DVD. Of course this process requires some software (which your PC might have already have it) and some time/effort to create the DVD.
It's not as simple as the DVD recorder but in the long run it could be more useful to you to have the equipment and ability to create your own DVD's especially since you (I assume) plan to continue your porn production activities.

^ Believe me. I've tried both and assuming you get a DVD recorder that works well and doesn't screw things up, it's way better to just bite the bullet and pay for the recorder. You can buy a cheap firewire card and capture the raw video but then you have to convert it to DVD. And that takes a while and can be more complicated than it sounds and then you have to burn the DVD, which can also go wrong. It's just a royal pain in the ass. Computers take for fucking ever to do anything with video footage.[Link] |

^Like I said, I don't know his situation, what stuff he already owns, what is his geek/skill/patience/comfort level, etc.
No doubt, the dvd recorder will be the easiest and most pain-free way to go.

Thanks. I have pretty much dedcided on the DVD recorder. It just seems like the simplest way to go, and the guy at Best Buy seems to think that it will give me the best quality recording. I'm also thinking I may run an ad and offer to shoot people their own personal, private videos, which I'll burn to DVD and then give them the original mini-DV tape as well. Maybe I can pick up a few bucks that way as well. I'm sure my next computer will be an Apple, but I'm wondering about suggestions as far as editing software, and is there a good way to learn how to edit online? I don't really have time for classes right now. the more I do this, the more fun I'm having, (shooting video) and I think I may start tryin to not only shoot but also edit my own scenes, and/or clips to sell.[Link] |

^ I don't know about the high end commercial software so here's a couple of freeware programs you can play with -
Virtualdub
AVIdemux
I'm not sure if you can use either of those as a capture utility and AVIdemux simply refused to convert the captured video from my Minidv camcorder. When it works, it works well. When it doesn't, the error messages are about as helpful as the "Check engine" light on a car. I think it told me something like "Something went wrong".  No kidding?
Anyway, be very careful about spending a lot on video editing software. It can be really complicated to use. You can do a lot of cool stuff with the right software but at the end of the day, the things you really need to be able to do are pretty simple and the software shouldn't be so hard to use that it takes forever to figure out how to do something really simple. A lot of the video software seems to suffer from this disease of mindless complexity.

cool. I will check it out. I got a Toshiba DVD recorder, and using an S-video cable (I had to order the right one) I recorded the footage to disc. It looks pretty good. And for it only being my second attempt, I think I have pretty good instincts when it comes to shooting this stuff. I am stoked![Link] |
