Producing/Directing, not as a performer.
I'm just going to ask that anyone that wants to come in and tell me "not to bother", "it's impossible" or anything else of that variety kindly just not post in this topic. I respect your opinion but I'd at least like to know the facts. ^_^
I live in Illinois. I figure my best shot at making any kind of substantial profit would be through making a high quality web site, get linked by a major site in exchange for a portion of my profits and eventually branch out after the site can generate enough traffic on it's own and has steady customers.
Maybe like abbywinters, hogtied or alsscan which I think started in similar ways.
Some questions though:
I know that most American porn is shot in California, but even assuming I lived there how exactly do you hire out talent as a new director. What do you have to do to be considered "respectable" enough to hire talent out?
If that option isn't open to me, what are some other ways of finding talent to work for you? Is there a potential market for producing porn in Illinois? Is it even legal?
Hell, I could write questions for days but what I'm really wondering is "Where do I start?"
I have several thousand dollars in camera equipment (It's a hobby, I didn't get this stuff just for porn in case you were wondering), about 15 thousand dollars in expendable income (inherited it from an Uncle recently), I'm a college junior and I want to avoid a lifetime of cyclical employment.
Best time to go broke is before you're 25. I want to start a business and I'm not afraid to bust out. Porn seems as good a business as any, I just need to do the research first and this seems like the best place to ask for advice.
Actually, a few friends and I once shot a video (I think I made a post about it here a while ago) with some girls who wanted to have sex with us and one thing lead to another and we ended up filming it and getting consent etc. We didn't fill out the right forms though, don't have their information anymore and nothing came of it.
I want to do it for real this time though. Hell, the porn market may be over saturated but I figure a great site with solid content can be extremely profitable. Like I said, I don't want to work for someone else for a living. I've got the time and the money so I want to take a shot at doing this and seeing if I can make something of it.
Links, info, or anything you have would be appreciated. ^_^

Well, the most important and the most difficult part of being successful in this business is finding some very attractive women willing to perform outrageous sex acts on screen. And no lady is going to do this for free. Lots of money you need for the ladies, for the production costs, and for the distribution.
I suggest you approach some strippers and massage ladies and offer them to be business partners of yours. They will share your profits. And if you are successful, then both you and the ladies will benefit from it.
These ladies probably can find their own male partners that they will feel comfortable with. And perhaps that will make their sex acts more natural and hot, than those of the competition.

Your best bet is to start off working for another company. If you already have some expertise in the use of camera equipment (and it sounds like you do), then you'll have a leg up getting a job.
This is the best way to go because it will give you a chance to see firsthand how the industry works while building a network of professional contacts. Also, it gives you a chance to see if this is even a business you want to be part of before you go and commit your own resources.

Good idea, and I'll definitely consider it.
I had an idea about procuring talent, but I'm curious about the legalities of it.
In some Caribbean countries around the world it seems to me that I could probably find strippers (etc.) that I could film for considerably less than I would have to pay people in the U.S.
I'm aware the escorts in the U.S. don't typically allow for filming if they aren't already in porn (and if they do it's normally for private use only and not the kind of thing that they'll sign a release over for).
However, in say the Camen Islands, Brazil, certain European countries etc. etc. I'm thinking that for the right (and a considerably lesser) price I could find talent. It would cost less than getting strippers/escorts to do it at much larger rates, many of the women would be just as beautiful, and I suspect it might even be easier to find talent at that.
However, like I said I'm not sure of the legality of selling my videos in the United States would be. Maybe if my place of business was legally based outside of the United States maybe, but even then don't I need a 2257 form? Might be a bit of a nightmare when dealing with people in another country as so far as confirming documents is concerned...
So yeah, I'm really wondering if there is anyone who can point me in the direction of the legalities involved with this process. The rest I can wing, probably. But I want to cross all my eyes and dot my T's lest I be the next Joe Francis. -_-
Thanks in advance everyone. ^_^

Strippers and other sex-workers may be cheaper and easier to find in some other countries. But you need to be aware of the laws and the culture of the country where you go. In some countries like Thailand for example, there are hundreds of thousands of sex-workers freely plying their trade. But you can get arrested there for making porn movies. And vast majority of sex-workers there are totally against having their pictures taken for public distribution.
It may be like that in other countries too. That's why I suggest that you research well the country you go to for making porn films, before you go there.

Definitely do some research and brush up on your geography or you might end up insulting the natives. There are not Caribbean countries "around the world", only in the region of the Caribbean sea. Anyone with any sort of nationalistic pride about where they are from might not take too kindly to your misplacing geographical regions.

I hate when this happens.
My unilateral, uninformed jackass opinion is as follows;
(a)Get onto the likes of One Model Place .com and sort yourself out with a few hot chicks for "tfp" (Time For Prints)... basically means you take lingerie, glamour and "artistic" nude photos for giving her a set of decent pro-ish photos for her "portfolio".
You're trying to build up your "portfolio" too. That's a resumé in photographish.
Then fire up these badboys up on your own personal .com photography website (not myspace). Buy www.iamapornographer.com domain for $10 and buy the webhost for it for $10 a month. Build it yourself with one of the packaged programs.
With this website, you'll have a pornodude@iamapornographer.com email addy, with which you can use to contact agencies right here and ask to book some semi-pro pornstar for a photoshoot (playing with herself only) for your website, www.iamapornographer.com.
Build your way up from photography to hardcore fucking video.
Climb the ladder, my son. Climb the ladder.
OR
(b)Get a damn good idea. A *damn* good idea. One that pornstars and "erotic" models (and plenty of escorts) will aspire to.
Appeal to their ambitious side, with an artistic, erotic movie.
No fucking, just a lot of simulated pelvis-rubbing and "Titanic" type sex.
Lots of upper bodies. No penetration. No visible genitals.
Once you have this made, you can use it as a reference of your skill and professionalism to hire proper pornstars from these agencies and let them fuck for your camera.
OR
(c)Some companies offer nobodies like us the chance to direct a porno.
For a price.
You choose the guys and the chicks, you write the screenplay/storyboard (yeah, I couldn't believe it either, pornos sometimes have these!!) and you direct.
The guy and the girl ride in the company's studio, with their cameraguy filming (you might be allowed do the filming yourself) while you shout directions such as "say oh yeah baby, i like sex! thats it, and again!"
Aaaaand hey presto, you just climbed the ladder to being set to make proper pornos.
Remember a few things, though.
> Every other guy in the world wants to get into porn too. Find something that sets you apart from the rest and flaunt it.
> If you need any free help with your "project", just ask any of your male friends. Not only will they do it enthusiastically, they'll show up early and bring donuts for everybody.
> Think with your head and not your cock.
Don't worry too much, if you have moola and an idea and equipment, agencies will work with you, so long as you hire GUYS and girls from them.
You want to avoid the cheap bait-n-switch of trying to get yourself laid by hot pornstars on film.
Plus, there are thousands of young hot girls across the states who want to do porn, butt don't know how to get into it.
You'll find these if you know what rock to look under.
Butt hey, this is just, like, my opinion, maaaaaaan.
Edited for some reason.

Here's my advice, coming from someone who’s done what you’re trying to do. Finding talent should be the least of your problems. Girls are easy to come by and if you have the right connections you can find girls to do videos anywhere in the world. You can get advice from a lawyer about the legal aspects, but it’s not so complicated. Your biggest concern (if you ever expect to make money at this) is going to be learning what it takes to produce great porn and market it effectively. That’s what separates the best from all the rest. It will probably take you some time to get the production part of it right, so expect to make a lot of mistakes and blow few scenes starting out. Few really have what it takes to make it big, but I wish you the best of luck.
BTW, Porn Scout gave you some great advice.

I suggest you rent "Porn's Most Outrageous Outtakes" 1 and 2 first. Especially if you've never been on a set. My god those stars can be a hand full. Its a wonder the studios pump out as much as they do with all the drugs, fighting and egos.
