But Ludwig II of Bavaria, he of Neuschwanstein Castle fame, is an interesting case. He was born in (believe it or not) Nymphenberg, Bavaria, Germany (but there really was no “Germany” at that time) in 1845. Most of the evidence suggests he was indeed as gay as the day is long. Some historians have suggested his relationship with composer Richard Wagner was more than just as a patron of the arts. Wagner, himself, was about as licentious as it gets. Ludwig’s drowning in 1886 was suspicious and as GS said, he was probably “helped along” in his apparent suicide because he was so outrageously gay he was an embarrassment to the Bavarian establishment. His doctor drowned with him supposedly in an attempt to “save his life” but in reality probably to silence him. Given that Bavarians are such a fun-loving bunch, it’s a little surprising they took such umbrage at Ludwig’s behavior. On the other hand, if he had been born in militaristic Prussia, he probably wouldn’t have made it to adulthood. Billy [Link] |

Sadly, my friend is a poor photographer, but, even so, his hundred plus photos from the event are fantastic.
