| GaySatyr Senior Member Half dirty ol' man; half horny ol' goat! 1684 Posts 10/00 | Posted - Jun 25 2003 : 4:40AM IF you buy the top-of-the-line G5 (64-bit) machine with a lot of RAM, it will end up costing you about 15% more than a somewhat tweaked-out custom dual Intel Xeon (32-bit) workstation-style machine set up with similar capabilities. There are some significant differences between the two; but in terms of raw speed, with all things made as equal as possible and still having both machines running in an all-out heat, it appears that Intel still wins the race but by a very, very small margin. So, the new Apple is both slightly more expensive and slightly slower than a nearly comparable Intel-based machine. With 64-bit processors coming from AMD and Intel to compete in this market, Apple may well be left behind again. However, remember that I said there are some significant differences in the two machines. Significant among those differences are their operating system philosophies and in the way in which users interact with the machine and its operation. There is a definite market for both systems and both systems will do a good job of fulfilling users' needs. ~ GaySatyr [Link] |

| waterproof Member 452 Posts 5/03 | Posted - Jun 27 2003 : 2:28AM there is no need to run linux on a "normal" workstation first versions did not support antialiased fonts - windows did have it since years. user interface only runs in single thread model (did they have changed it for now ?). linux should be the solution for routers, webservers and all that stuff without any graphic use.
