Hello, all, posted what ended up being a very spirited thread (mostly pc-vs.mac talk, unfortunately) last year about having trouble with Evil Angel DVDs on my Mac.

Now, before it was just the DVDs hung up. Now, two in particular (Ass Collector and Lex the Impaler 2) refuse to even be read. My mac asks if I want to format them. Other DVDs work fine, by the way, but I've had problems with *every* Evil Angel DVD I've purchased.

No scratches on the surface, and no hardware changes. OS 9.2. It seems one by one my cherished EA collection is becoming unwatchable. Any other Mac users having problems?

This may not help since this is a fix I use for that problem that occurs sometimes on my Windows PC. If I explore the disc before trying to play it, my player will accept discs that previously it wouldn't accept asking if I would like to format them. I don't know if this will work on a MAC though.

Hey, Sneakers! Nice to hear from you again, but sorry about the circumstances. Unfortunately, I don't know what's causing your problem; Lex 2 plays fine on my machine. I'm running OS 9.0.4 on an iMac G3/500; my player is the Apple DVD Player 2.2.1.

Have you tried allotting extra memory to your player? Mine has a recommended minimum of 8192K and I've boosted the preferred size to 20000K.

BTW, here's a link to the old thread.

Hey guys--

thanks for initial comments. Regarding exploring the disk and alotting extra memory, I can't even get that far, because right after I stick the DVD in, my Mac asks if I want to format the DVD or eject. Leaves me very little choice!

I'm using DVD Player 1.3, because I'm using an ATi card. Newer versions of the software don't work on my Blue-and-White.

Still saving up for the new 15.4" PBs when they come out!

Actually, Sneakers, you need to shut the DVD player off (be sure to completely quit the application, don't just minimize it) before you allot more memory. Here's the step-by-step process of how it works on my computer:

(1) Double click on the "Macintosh HD" icon on the desktop to open the hard drive.

(2) Double click on the "Applications" folder to open.

(3) Double click on the "Apple DVD Player" folder to open.

(4) *Single* click on the "Apple DVD Program" to highlight.

(5) Go to "File" in the top menu bar and choose "Get Info..." then "Memory."

(6) Look at the "Minimum Size" under "Memory Requirements" and enter a number that's at least 10% higher in the "Preferred Size" field. (I more than doubled mine.)

I can't guarantee this will help, but I don't think it will hurt.

sorry, just got back from a weekend away.

Someone else just told me the same thing about Evil's discs on a mac.

I have been able to play our discs fine on my mac (G4). Give me a few days and I'll play around with it a little and see if I can find a few more macs with DVD-Roms to try out.

I think it's unlikely that you have a memory problem, being that you're able to play other DVDs that would tax your system as much as Evil Angel's disks. More than likely the disks are burned in a format that your old extensions aren't up to, which would be the best reason to upgrade the software. If ATI and Apple never resolved that problem, your next option would be OSX. Apple is completely phasing out 9 and developers aren't wasting their time with it anymore.

I remember reading some about similar problems back when I still used OS 9 (haven't looked back since 10.1 and never even use the Classic environment anymore).
Some DVD would not mount (and therefore the Mac would ask you if you wanted to format or eject) under OS 9.

(damn, I pressed the enter key by accident and my post was posted )

Anyway, I had to search on google because I couldn't remember where to find it, but there was an option to try: using a different UDF extension (UDF is the fileformat used for DVD) from Adaptec. I remeber installing the UDF ISO FS Enabler so I could try adaptec's UDF extension when I found a DVD I had would not mount. It worked for me with that DVD (but your milage may vary...)
See the link for info and downloading it.

Let me guess you also have problems Playing the Matrix on DVD?
aarle's on top of it.

I think some of those DVDs might have UDF-ISO format and some MACs have trouble reading them.

The Terminator 2 Special edition has a breif thing about that. The special stuff can only work on a Windows PC and not a MAC. Of course the DVD was funny and was like. All the PC users were logged by Skynet and were killed first leaving only the MAC users as the survivors...

Well, I've tried Ass Collector and Fresh Meat 15 (two that I've heard about Mac problems with) in 2 macs each.

One mac is my edit mac - a new G4.
The other is an older mac G3 tower (a blue/white like yours).

I haven't changed any settings and am using the original DVD software that came with the computers.

So far, no problems.

Sneakers - I'd REALLY appreciate it if you could try Peter's UDF suggestion and let us all know if it works.

BTW, thanks to all of you who are doing so much to help me and the others out with stuff like this!
