Would it be possible to implement some kind of limited "voting" feature at ADT? The pre-packaged bulletin board software packages that a lot of web forums use seem to have this capability.

What I'm envisioning is putting users with very low post counts (say, less than 30) into something like a "probationary user" category; each post by a probationary user would have, stuck at the bottom, a voting box saying something like "click here if you believe this probationary user's post violates this forum's rules against spam, trolling, or offensive postings." Voting privileges would be restricted to more senior members (post count threshold TBD). If enough (say, half a dozen) voters give the probationary user a thumbs down for any given post, then his posting privileges would automatically be suspended (or just terminated), (and/or the post would be automatically deleted, and/or all of that user's posts would be deleted; the nature and extent of the of the punitive action obviously need to be further thought out).

A system like this would expedite the process of ridding the board of spammers and the idiots that keep coming back under new identities to try to cause trouble.

Spammers tend to get caught on the first day.

Is low post count worse than low sperm count?

I clicked on this thread because I'm looking for something to crush my plastic bottles, they take up too much space in the recycling bin, we drink a lot of fluids (even excluding the bodily fluids) as it's a very hot summer down under.

My plan to address this is that new users will have X number of posts held in a moderation queue. I think a reasonable number for X would be 3 or 5. So their posts might be delayed by up to 24 hours, that's OK IMO.

Croy - yes, most of the spam posts are caught within a few hours but the spammers still receive the benefit of their junk posts being picked up in our RSS feeds and cached all over the internet. I'd like to prevent that from happening.

Good to see you're thinking of doing something about it. Isn't it possible to ban by IP or something so they don't keep coming back? It seems fairly likely that many of the different SNs might be the same person.

Some of the assholes know how to hide their IP. They spend a lot of time registering different accounts. It's sad.

In the meantime please do email me about problem users.

I also have a completely new registration system that makes is much easier to prevent problem users from signing using various tidbits of info. There's also a built-in delay on confirming new registrations instead of the current instantaneous method. It will launch soon.

It's really sad that it's even necessary. Even Usenet has gone to the dogs. It always had it's share of trolls but it's just a zoo these days. If it isn't spam, it's trolls.

what's even sadder than the 13yr-olds (mentally) we have to deal with are the industry people who think they're hiding their tracks coming here to post childish things about their competitors. it's not the govt that will bring this industry down. it's the total lack of professionalism.

just needed to get that off my chest. all better now :)

Yeah, it's a problem. And it's not one that we can completely eradicate without creating a ton of extra work.

Some of the problem with the spammers recently is that the affiliate programs they are promoting are specifically telling them to spam message forums. They send out emails to effect of "A good way to promote our site and make money is to join message forum and community sites to promote your linking codes."

Maybe I should start sending advertising invoices to the sites they promote with their spam?

Sending someone a bill for advertising services is spamming? I don't get it.

I was being a bit facetious.
Unwanted mail, and all that....
They wouldn't really want your bill - would they?

As an interim measure, it would be nice if new accounts were blocked from posting the words "Kelly" and "Wells."
