^ this is rubbish
Does she even know how to calculate life expectancy?
yes, there are deaths in porn, but to make the "life expectancy of a porn performer to be 37", that would account for THOUSANDS of deaths in the last 30 years to even calculate such a figure. Have there been dozens of performers that have died in the last 20 years under 37, yep. There are also millions of people in America in all sorts of non-sex jobs that died before 37. Two suicides in porn this year does not make a statistic like this. She can present us numbers that say it is higher or lower than a national average, but to throw that out there is just embarrassing.
A "vast a majority of the performers I shot most of my movies with in the 1990s are no longer with us". This is complete bunk. 20 minutes on IAFD throws that out the window in a moment.
Society has people committing suicide, overdosing on drugs, getting murdered, having car accidents, and so on. Does porn have risks? Absolutely! But this is complete bunk what she is writing just from those two alone.
There are ways to discuss the negatives of the sex industry without turning into Donald Trump and pulling air out of your butt and presenting it as fact. Because of her name and people not researching for themselves, this will be accepted by a lot of casual readers. Which is DANGEROUS, especially when you have lawmakers wanting to doom the sex industry; pieces like this, filled with falsehoods, do not protect sex workers.
Ok, rant over for a moment.

Where did Lisa Ann find that data? I hear it repeated in circles related to Gail Dines, but without any proof. Is that where she got the number 37? And what constitutes a "porn star"? Does that mean, people who perform in adult film--whether one scene or 370--have an average life expectancy of 37? Good luck finding any of those one and done performers with names like "Ann." Absurd.
This kind of crap hurts sex workers.

I think I found the source. However, the article provides the real names of each performer so I can't link it. I can tell you the following, however:
Number of performers in the sample: 129 who were directors, performers, writers, and producers covering six decades of the industry.
Causes of death include: suicide, AIDS, car crash, heart failure, lung disease, overdose, asthma, murder, Alzheimers, brain cancer, stroke, and on and on.
So yeah. Bullshit.

that number ... out of what, 20,000+ people who have been in adult industry in the last 40 years? I wonder if she pulled some numbers out of gay porn in the 80s and 90s before there was functional HIV medications and testing protocols and extrapolated it? Either way, this article is committing a fraud to anyone who reads it. I hope very much this doesn't go viral or make a lot of mainstream coverage.
her article hurts sex workers, it helps no one other than making it look like she is some industry whistleblower to the general public. Which I guess is her agenda. She is trying to create various post porn career options as a writer, or at the very least have people feel sorry for her so she can explain away any shortcomings.
I think all the people she worked with in the 90s should post comments and say "Hey, I am alive!" :)
To be more serious. I find this article to be completely irresponsible and even worse than her "anti escorting" work when she magically shows up at athletic events with wealthy athlete "friends"

I went looking for the article to try to figure out if it was for a reputable peer-reviewed journal and review its objectivity before dismissing it as "FAKE RESEARCH". I couldn't find it, but I did find the following articles that relate to performers & mental health or drug use:
*Comparison of the Mental Health of Female Adult Film Performers and Other Young Women in California
*Pornography Actresses: An Assessment of the Damaged Goods Hypothesis
* Comparison of Sexual Behaviors and Attitudes, Self-Esteem, Quality of Life, and Drug Use Among Pornography Actors and a Matched Sample
*Sexual Behaviors and Attitudes, Quality of Life, and Drug Use: A Comparison Between Bisexual and Heterosexual Pornography Actresses

Further to here " majority of the performers I shot most of my movies with in the 1990s are no longer with us.'
I informally have been looking at IAFD which is very comprehensive as far as her 1990s work goes. its a bit of a manual job as you have to click individual performers and so forth.
However, I challenge anyone to find more than 2 or 3 that she actually performed with in sex scenes in the 1990s that are currently deceased. I havent found one yet, and I clicked quite a few. I am not a database of 1990s performer names so I cant just scan a list and know who is deceased
Anyways, that claim is bogus too
I re read the article. There is a lot of meaningful content in there. However, when she wraps it in bullshit it really takes away any value she could have had and turns it into tabloid crap that could be used against the industry , not to make it better.
Highly disappointed in Lisa Ann.

Oh no. I finally read the source and that is no valid way of sampling and calculating life expectancy if you only consider the dead people in a 20 year window. You have to consider the people that are still alive as there are tons more people alive than dead.

Relevant article.

"
"We're considered outcasts from society. A lot of us have to hide parts of our lifestyles and that leads to isolation and a lot of us have strange relationships with our families and friends because most of aren't 'out' which can lead to more loneliness," Ms Missina told news.com.au.
Ms Bee, who has been in the porn industry since 2010, said the loneliness can come from the stigma they face on a daily basis.
"When you can't get that help and you don't have a lot of people who can at least listen to you to talk about what you're dealing with - that can be very isolating. Isolation and feeling alone sucks," Ms Bee said.
"What's really killing us at the moment is stigma. When we enter this industry we immediately get stigmatised, they treat us like garbage while simultaneously engaging and enjoying whatever we're creating.
"They love and watch the content but they don't really give a shit about the people that are making it, which I find incredibly frustrating," she said."

I'll go ahead and be the one to suggest it. Religion is to blame for society's negative views on porn. Most of society has been taught/brainwashed by religion that this sort of thing is immoral, dirty and/or a ticket to hell. Watching or participating in porn is none of those. Get rid of religion and you get rid of the stigma. Discuss. :)

What is the "average lay person" ?
The porn consuming community is probably a microcosm of life. I am a doctorate level scientist and many doctors, engineers, and businessmen with MBAs are ardent consumers of porn.
On a more general level the scientific community has a responsibility to make sure that the basic tenets of good research are understood by everyone in society, and teaching scientific method, the psychology of bias and some basic process improvement ideas, not to mention how to parse a newspaper or blog article for honesty, should be part of the civics curriculum. The US has become a polarised society and truth telling has been eroded as a core value especially since the Gore/Bush fiasco in Florida, where looking on as a European scientist, I was saddened to see that people took positions on the voting issue based on politics and not on science.
All this seems like a digression but it is relevant. As far as deaths in the industry performer community, four in one year is a large number compared to the death rate for women in the 18-25 age group. That is just an educated guess because it is not a scientific sample, but a magnitude of difference of at least tenfold tells us to worry.
It is hard to calculate both numerator and denominator in this field. However there was a published peer reviewed US study of prostitutes published in 2004 that indicated the death rate in that aspect of sex work was 200 times higher than for women of similar age and race.
The problem is people's views are highly politicized. Missy Martinez tweeted the other day that the only reason porn star deaths were noticed was that they were famous people. She said the media was fetishizing porn deaths and exaggerating to suit its own sensationalist agenda. This probably has some truth to it, but her point that the death rate in the adult movie performer community was the same as for the general population just doesn't have a basis. I pointed out that objectively less than 20,000 porn films were made in 2017 in the US and the 80/20 rule applies so that most stars appear in multiple films, then in all likelihood there were not more than 10,000 performers (and that is a large and generous estimate). I was attacked by a guy who said there were a hundred thousand plus "sex workers" in the US. I replied that Missy had started the thread not about sex workers in general but about performers in the adult movie industry. Of course my attacker was not interested in the distinction because it didn't suit his purpose.

Organised religion is a form of social control, but all over the world different societies have used it as an organising force, presumably because many people, even intelligent people with scientific minds, buy into the Noble Lie that there is a land of milk and honey in a next life. As an atheist, to me that is like the belief in Santa Claus or the Tooth Fairy as a child. Eventually we grow out of those beliefs because as adults it doesn't suit us to continue them. In fact dropping them is a rite of passage. Yet we maintain the lie and bring up the next generation of kids the same, because we reckon it is sweet and fits with the magical thinking of childhood. However a large percentage of us cling to belief in religion albeit in a strange hypocritical way.
Religion is used to control those who believe in it with fear of hellfire, but also to ostracise and vilify those who don't believe in it. Heretics have been persecuted for.centuries and belief in the wrong religion has been costly. Jews in the 20th century, Muslims now, Rohinga etc.
Many religions are started with noble ideas about love and helping our fellow man but eventually are corrupted by people who use them to their own ends. And religion has strange effects. I have liked in UK for 20 years and in that time most people I knew didn't care about religion except for weddings funerals and Christmas. But the rise of the minority religion of Islam has resulted in lapsed Christians going back to their beliefs and we now she a lot of Crusader imagery and crosses in right wing groups. The Muslim leaders are actually happy about this because persecuting a faith is the best way to get people to practise it. Look at Ireland. While the British had anti Catholic laws the people became super Catholic and after independence from Britain the church dominated society and imposed massive anti sexuality and anti feminist agenda. It took exposure of the abuse of kids by priests to knock them.back and now.Ireland is very much a post Christian agnostic society.
This is all very well but religiosity takes decades to change. When I was growing up in repressed Catholic Ireland in the 70s we looked to American movies as an alternateve truth. The heroes like Eastwood and MCQueen bedded hot women within hours of meeting them and they were the heroes, the good guys. It was the only counter narrative to the church anti sexuality. Ironically now, I look to America and see a country that has its liberal heart eroded over 40 years and the rise of a crass, stupid cadre that literally believe in the seven day creation and disavow Darwin, and call hermosexuaity a disorder.
In recent years it has occurred to me, why don't we allow people to migrate to designated countries if they are liberal and others if they are not? We would soon see if the Sodom and Gomorrah bullshit was true or if the recreation of the Medici Florentine State of the renaissance would work better. Remember that Leonardo da Vinci would have been lost to the world had Florence not existed. As a gay artistic man he would have been crushed in any other city, especially Rome.

The number of deaths means nothing without a comparative sample and without a list of work related issues a car crash has nothing to do with porn by itself , Alzehimer comes from genetics but most of all some porn performers are already "damaged" when they begin to shoot.
There are disturbed or drug addicted girls who do porn for the easy money many of them escort .
For example if a drug addicted girl enters in porn and also escort to what reasin would you attach an overdose?
Is some actress is victim of an abusive partner what porn has to do with that.
also I'd like to remind Sledgehammer who has been killed by the police , is his death related to him being a porn performer or the abusive behaviour of some nervous policeman?

The overtly atheistic regimes in the Soviet Union and China did not treat sex workers any better, perhaps even worse than other countries. The blaming of 'religion' (a very vague term) for everything is tiresome.

^ Those were socialist regimes acting on political idealogies. Atheism has nothing to do with how people are treated, it's simply a lack of belief in gods.

Or we could just get back to my point of addressing mental health rather than religion, bullying, drinking/drug abuse, atheism, or political affiliation. No matter where you fit within all those categories mental health will always be an issue somewhere along the lines.

Well, of course it came from religious programming here in our country. They applied that garbage to pot, gay people, trans gender, science , you name it.
Its a battle, but 40% of the nation still legitimately believe the earth is 6000 years old, and the GOP still fight hard against equal rights for people who are not hetro, not christian, and not white. Long way to go.

That is a dodge and untrue, but without getting off topic: my point was that people don't need religion to justify oppressing sex workers or any other kind of violence.
People were opressing women and sex workers long before the arrival of monotheism.

Probably, but the stigma that sex workers endure creates an environment conducive to depression, so politics, misogyny, religion, and law are intimately tied to mental health in sex work. The way people treat porn performers is a massive part of this. If you want to help, you can do so by actively combating those attitudes and donating money to organizations and legal cases that work toward ending that stigma.

^ That's from 2014. Creationist beliefs as of mid-2017 are at an all time low of 38%.
I can't find the sample size, though, nor how these polls are conducted/accessed. I only read the article though. Will dig around.

"SURVEY METHODS
Results for this Gallup poll are based on telephone interviews conducted May 3-7, 2017, with a random sample of 1,011 adults, aged 18 and older, living in all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia. For results based on the total sample of national adults, the margin of sampling error is ±4 percentage points at the 95% confidence level. All reported margins of sampling error include computed design effects for weighting.
Each sample of national adults includes a minimum quota of 70% cellphone respondents and 30% landline respondents, with additional minimum quotas by time zone within region. Landline and cellular telephone numbers are selected using random-digit-dial methods."
And you can download a pdf of the full methodology and responses.

I do that every day, it's my job. Well not the donating part because I don't make the kind of money to do that. I realize how all of these things negatively impact one's mental well being. However, my point is, you can help an individual quicker than you can change a whole society, so why not address the mental health piece rather than everything out of the individual's control.

To answer your question, not a doctorate level scientist or any of the population that you described. I was also describing the average layman reader who accepts the life expectancy quote at face value rather than some guy on a porn board because, as Gore Gore Girl noted, it's been pitched around in contexts that are anti-porn.
How can it be an educated guess when you compared the 4 industry deaths, including Shyla Stylez and Yurizan Beltran, to the death rate of 18-25 age group?

Hard to say if the decrease going from 42% to 38% is significant when the figures fall within the error rate.

Geez, it's amazing how far "off the rails" a thread like this can go.
Getting back to the subject of this thread...let's face it, with the exception of this (quoted below), the people in porn are pretty much on their own:

The local women’s forum I follow had an interview with Madison Missina on this issue.
https://www.mamamia.com.au/porn-star-suicides/
Some interesting comments.
Regarding bullying within the industry:
“What drives this behaviour, she argues, is something called 'lateral violence' - that is, attacking one's peers rather than one's enemies, a characteristic often associated with disenfranchised groups. "No one wants to be at the bottom of the pecking order within a group that's already at the bottom of society's pecking order. So they try and shoot those around them down," she said. "
And an interesting comment for you Matt Foley
“Sadly, many performers argue that even mental health professionals aren't immune to prejudices against them and their work, and that their jobs are often treated as a symptom. "When we seek professional help we basically have to seek out peer-based counsellors, because [others] basically say the reason why our lives are chaotic, the reason we're having these issues is because we're sex workers, and so they try to get us out of the industry," Missina said. “

That is interesting. I mean if your job is causing you stress you discuss the options of finding a new job regardless of the profession, but if it is something they're passionate about and want to keep doing or don't have other options you don't push them. They're not very good therapists if they don't know their clients and have the rapport necessary to make these decisions. i'm guessing the therapists are bringing this up before even knowing the client. Really it's just being lazy and hoping they can quickly solve their client's problem instead of providing them tools they can use to cope. It's not like mental health professionals are immune to being bad at their jobs, it's something we deal with on a daily basis and is probably the most stressful thing about my own job.

These are the requirements for the APAC Stamp for Professionals, including psychologists/therapists:

See adult performance as a valid form of employment.
Be aware of and willing to learn more about the unique nature of the adult industry from performers.
Acknowledge that sexuality is diverse and that no one view or social norm can encompass what constitutes healthy sexuality.
Respect the choice of each individual to be an adult performer and not try to "save" the individual from sex work.
Understand that sex workers are as entitled to privacy and their boundaries as any other client.

^ Thanks MF. An interesting article, with insightful observations from women in the industry.
I've picked some quotes below.
"[Ruby says] In my opinion, they really don't care whether we die or not," she says of the industry's producers. "In fact, I'm going to be probably a little crass here, but this is true: They'd prefer we die because they can make money off of us forever." "
"Unlike pre-Internet porn stars, performers today face the added pressures of social media interactions, increased competition without increased pay and a demand for more physically taxing sex scenes - all of which can exacerbate existing mental health or substance abuse issues."
(I would add, in addition, where pre-internet, when you left the industry, you could assume your images were unlikely to be seen or known about by people you come into contact with. )
"To her [Amber Lynn], the onus is on performers to better define their boundaries and learn to step away from the gig - including its social media obligations - if it becomes hazardous, mentally or physically. "A lot of these people get into the business and they don't think they can be anything else. They don't think they can survive outside the industry and that's not true," she says. "You can get out of the industry tomorrow if it no longer works." "

There have been studies and polls in the USA and 40% is generally the number. (one of the prior posters brought in one that is 38%, so yes this is a legitimate range). It is mostly the Evangelical Christians who hold onto literal interpretations of the Bible (specifically Genesis); and they drive the part of the GOP that battles against climate science, evolution in schools, and the fight against LGBT equality. They are certainly welcome to believe that, but because they are large in number ,and have major influence in a political party, they do have an effect that is detrimental to the lives of many of our American citizens and residents.
This is not a literary forum, but there are polls and studies out there that are easily found and can be quoted and footnoted, and you can go into any Evangelical church and still see a lot of young earth creationists. I think in Canada the number is much lower, which reflects in the laws which promote science and equality a lot more and the squabbles that various states have over trans and LGBT and gay marriage and evolution are not election issues in Canada; because not enough of the population is still hanging onto literal interpretations of Genesis.

I don't consider it off the rails. There are lots of interesting discussions weaving back and forth. I understand a lot of people, especially moderators, prefer a forum thread stay 100% (or close to) the topic as it was created. But I feel it is healthy to zig and zag through a debate as we would in the real world. This thread has been a good discussion.

Can confirm. While there are pockets of evangelicals in Canada they are small in number and generally small in influence. We don't have the debates that rage in the US and seem to divide the population. Things like evolution, abortion* and even gay marriage are just facts here. One of our two main federal political parties, the Conservative Party of Canada, has staked out a socially conservative position but I suspect that will backfire on them. There just aren't enough social conservatives in the country to allow them to win a majority in an election. Most people, me included, expected them to elect a more moderate leader in an attempt to get more mainstream support. I also suspect that I'm in the big centre of things as I want leadership that isn't necessarily left or right - I want leadership that is fiscally prudent and socially modern.
This is off topic, but I recall reading some years ago a hypothesis as to why the US is so different from other Western democracies when it comes to religiousity. A statistician in Canada named Michael Adams wrote a couple of books over a 10+ year period based on polling and interviews and found some striking differences between the US and Canada in terms of issues like religion and patriarchy. He anticipated those differences would lessen over time as Americans became more moderate but in his 2003 book he found that the gaps were actually widening. I think it's fair to say that those gaps have widened even more since 2003. Anyway, Adams hypothesized that American religiousity was caused by your strict separation of church and state. In Canada, the UK, Australia and most other western democracies there was no such divide. In the UK the Anglican church is part of government. Their head of state, the Queen, is also the head of the Church. In Canada, depending on where you were, either the Anglican or Catholic church held huge influence in government. In the 1960s in Quebec the government and the Catholic Church teamed up to make the lives of Mormons miserable. But... in the 1960s when people began being distrustful of government and were demanding more accountability they saw the churches as just being part of that rot and beginning in the 1960s there was a huge turning away from the churches as people 'modernized' their thinking about individual rights. But in the US, the hypothesis goes, the church wasn't tainted by the anti-government movement and therefore survived and thrived.
Obviously this depends a lot on what circles you run in, but of the potentially hundreds of people I know, either well or in passing, I only know of two, a couple in their late 70s, who attend church regularly. It's Sunday morning now and virtually everyone I know is doing something other than worshiping. It just isn't part of their lives. Admittedly, not all of them are posting on a porn thread and nursing a wee hangover, but they're definitely not in church either.
(* Abortion is the one socially conservative issue that still seems to have legs in Canada. Federal law allows it (though prohibits the most divisive forms of it in late term) but the provinces manage the health care system so they have day-to-day control. Where I live, in New Brunswick, the single-payer health care system will only pay for abortions after a woman jumps through some hoops. A private clinic has opened to get around that. In a neighbouring province, Prince Edward Island, no hospital will perform abortions so women there generally go to the clinic in NB. It's fair to say though that both NB and PEI are among the most socially conservative provinces in the country. The populations of both are very white, very old, very old-school and very rural.)

From the survey methods: "the margin of sampling error is ±4 percentage points at the 95% confidence level".

The grey line on top represents people who claim to be young earth creationists. It seems to have changed very little since the first poll, especially given the margin of error.
The scientific consensus is that humanity emerged by natural processes, but science is agnostic on the question of the degree to which a supernatural being may (or may not have) designed natural processes with a certain end in mind. Thus it's hard to know what fraction of middle group accept the scientific consensus. Again, it seems that the middle group is little changed since the 1980s.
Still, there seems to have been a real increase in the number of respondents who affirm the third option. I suspect a large part of this may be explained by immigration, and may not represent a dramatic shift in the thinking of the US-born population.

(Remember that the margin of error isn't the same for the entire poll. The fewer people who make a claim, the less confidence in your statistic, so there is a bigger margin of error in the estimate for the third group. So one could imagine an unchanged proportion with a margin of error of around 5 or 6% for that statistic. Still, it's hard to look at the third line and not see a steady increase.)

^ I would suggest that the increase (doubling) for the third option is primarily due to people having better access to information (scientific findings, debates on this issue, etc.) via the internet in recent times, also improvements in science and new discoveries are probably contributing factors.

Yes about the Conservatives in Canada. Actually, they have given up a lot of the "Moral values" that are still rooted in the GOP in America because it just is not a viable position in Canada anymore. They will no longer fight against gay marriage, they are so so on abortion but the last long term Cons government decided to just leave the laws where they are. They still don't give a shit about trans issues but on the other hand as a party they are not trying to enact laws that will harm them. While a lot of their MPS do believe in young earth creationism, they dont make it an election issue, don't attempt to mess with school boards over teaching it in schools, and generally keep it as a personal value. The last time a Conservative leader made it a public issue (Stockwell Day in the early 2000s I think), he got decimated over it and they learned a hard lesson.
More and more Christians are creating their narrative that science is real, evolution and the age of the universe is real, and it is just "Gods' Design to be that way". If that brings them peace so be it. But when the number of Americans passionately adhering to Genesis is so high, and they have huge influence in the GOP, it causes a lot of issues in the nation that are far from being addressed.

Yeah that far right nonsense doesn't play in Canada.

Not on a large enough scale to affect public policy. I think from past studies its sitting around 20% as far as the people who want to push creationism in schools, ban gay marriage, and all the other "moral values" they want. They do have affect on communities social structure if it is a high proportion. There is one community not too far from Vancouver, for example, that has parents groups actively trying to boot trans kids out of their schools (i am not joking about that, its appalling) and ban sex education that has anything that says LGBT are equal citizens in this country. But, again, they are not enough to affect significant public policy so they can whine and bitch all they want about how horrible society is because we are attempting to have everyone equal under the law.
