Not new news for anyone who has been keeping up with Distribpix' Radley Metzger releases, but I can now officially say that THE OPENING OF MISTY BEETHOVEN will be hitting retailers within the next couple months, sporting a new and fully restored (and uncut) 2K transfer in addition to HOURS of fantastic bonus features.
In addition to the expected interviews with Metzger and others, this DVD marks the home video debut of the rarely seen alternate 'cool' version (also mastered in 2K) in addition to never before seen outtakes, tons of still and artwork galleries, etc.
What's more is that this film is slated to be released on both DVD and Blu-Ray!
Steven has been posting regular updates about the progress of the release, so stay turned for plenty more updates, including additional extra specs and some HD screengrabs from the new transfer.

Yes, restoration of BARBARA will be underway next month probably. Expect a fully restored and uncut XXX version as well as a fully restored and uncut 'cool' version, which will feature a bunch of footage that was never even included in the hard cut!

What is a 'cool' version?

It was a film term for non-explicit cut. The hard version was referred to as the 'hot' version.

Will the unreleased footage in the 'cool' version be integrated into the XXX version too? In my mind, that would create something like a complete all-encompassing composite.

Not really as the footage was never intended to be in the hard versions. We're trying to preserve the integrity of these films as their makers intended them to be seen so doing something like that would be kinda counter-intuitive. However, I see where you're coming from.
Bare in mind also that a lot of scenes in the cool versions were intentionally shot for the cool versions so they wouldn't properly integrate anyway due to the way the films are edited.

Can't wait for this one, or barbara broadcast either, both of them are tops when it comes to classic porn. I hope they got some interviews with some of the actors and actresses from the film. I know it's not always possible, but it's always nice when they can be done. Oh did Video X Pix manage to get to include the commentary from the VCA dvd of Misty Beethoven? That one was fascinating.

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like that commentary is going to be available for the new DVD. Attempts were made to obtain it but right now it doesn't look promising. Too bad, really.

I'm I being overly optimistic, or does anyone else feel like this will be a sort of crossover, breakthough release of sorts?

We hope so. If any film is going to do that, it'll be this one. Even though there are better XXX movies out there, none have the critical acclaim of MISTY.

By the way, to whoever links DVD sale pages to threads, I'm not sure how logical it is to be advertising VCA's cut, tape sourced, pan and scan disaster of a DVD (commentary track aside) on a thread about an upcoming restored version. Seems sorta counter-intuitive.
Especially since VCA is legally no longer permitted to distribute their version.

I read on the site about the Blu-ray release there may be a theatrical screening of the movie. Please bring it back to the New Beverly Cinema (as a midnight feature, of course). This time I will go.

Some very unfortunate news has developed.
Kickstarter sent Distribpix an email earlier today stating that they are going to be removing the MISTY Blu-Ray campaign and not honoring any of the pledges due to the film being sexually explicit.
An update regarding this has just been posted:
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/136726896/the-opening-of-misty-beethoven-goes-blu-ray/posts/240359
Although Kickstarter has a 'no pornography' policy, the campaign was readily approved by them despite its including clear statements that the film was rated X and contained sexually explicit content.
Kickstarter has allowed numerous other campaigns for sexually explicit films including including Travis Matthews' I WANT YOUR LOVE, which is currently set to be distributed by gay XXX giant Naked Sword.
The cancellation of MISTY reeks of bias and selective policy enforcement. Stating it bluntly, if Kickstarter has a policy in place, they must abide by it universally, not decide to enforce it when it's convenient.
So...What you can do:
1) If you've already made a pledge, don't worry, your credit card will not be charged! You can email Steven Morowitz directly at steven@videoxpix.com to get details on how to re-pledge via paypal or direct charge.
2) If this pisses you off as much as it pisses us off, let your mind be heard and don't hesitate to contact Kickstarter and explain to them that their selective policy enforcement is unacceptable, or whatever else is on your mind. Share thoughts on why you think this project and film is important. Please be nice. Meeting rudeness with rudeness gets no one anywhere.
3) Equally important, if you have a blog, facebook page or other type of social media outlet, share this info with fellow film fans and Metzger lovers. The support for this campaign has been strong so make the fight for it even stronger.
If we continue to work together, we will make a change.

^ Interesting. And I don't want to get all conspiracy-theory-ish, but isn't it a bit odd that they pulled the plug right when you were near completing your goal? I look forward to hearing more about this if and when they provide a full explanation...and I wanna know who the terrible person is that Steven alluded to!

It seems that it's gone down this way: Kickstarter doesn't care if a project is sexually explicit or not, as long as it isn't straight up throwaway porn. They'll pretty much let anything slide...unless they get a complaint.
That appears to have been what happened. A person with a vendetta sent a lie filled complaint to Kickstarter which prompted them to attempt to cover their asses.
They issued a thoroughly insulting email in which they said something to the effect of "we missed the policy violation when we first OKed the project, but now we noticed so we're canceling it."
When questioned as to the specifics of what the violation was, why they had not made their 'discovery' sooner and were presented with other successfully funded projects which contained hardcore material, their response was an even more insulting acknowledgement that the term 'pornography' is subjective and hard to define, followed by "Misty Beethoven firmly resides on the other side of that line and violates our guidelines."
Hooray for Kickstarter. Champion of free expression.

^ My very first thought was that someone had complained.
As for the response, how very enlightened of them to reference the subjectivity of porn, only to then assert their judgment of what is and is not porn. Yeah yeah, I know, it's their company. Whatever. It's cowardly.
The letter I tried to send to them included a portion that stated what I thought kickstarter represented -- grass roots efforts at supporting independent art -- and how this made their decision all the more disheartening. I'm going to continue trying to send my letter -- I don't care if it's futile in terms of getting the project back on track; I just want to see their justification in print.
Thanks for info.

I hope the new site is successful in raising the $10,000 needed.
I must say though, I have doubts about the viability of this new scheme. Steven says "if we reach our $10,000 goal, we’ll e-mail each of you an invoice for the amount you have pledged." The Kickstarter site is successful because they have your credit card details (via Amazon) and there's a definite commitment to pay. Send someone an invoice however, and there's absolutely no guarantee they will pay.
Still, I would prefer this idea to simply giving up. I take it IndieGoGo was a non-starter?

It's the only way it can be done, unfortunately.
Indiegogo has a 'no sexually explicit content' policy, which sucks, but to their credit they at least say that rather than employing a vague 'no porn' requirement and then justifying what they choose to allow and not allow with arcane "I know it when I see it" type language.

Yeah, I know about it...
Thing is, MISTY is more than just another XXX film. It has a mainstream cult following and it was directed by a major art filmmaker.
The whole point of this project is to allow MISTY to receive as much exposure in general markets as possible and be appreciated by fans in the best edition possible.
Shoving it into the porn ghetto in any way will only hurt the above stated goals. Sure, it's X rated, but it's also a popular cult film and ought to be treated as such.
Offbeater is an interesting seeming site, but I don't like the whole 'request an invite' thing. It seems weird and shady and I'm sure that element alone would dissuade people from joining. I'd like to browse without handing over any personal info and it doesn't appear that I can.
