I just installed the 400GB Western Digital hard drive that I got during the Black Friday sale and it says that I have only 125GB free, how is this ****ing possible???!!!

OK. Relax. It's likely there's nothing wrong with your hard drive. Older computers have something like a 130 gig limit and anything larger will show up as 125 gigs or something. There's a way to fix it but I'll have to try and look it up. If the drive came with a set of utilities by Western Digital, you might want to try running them in the meantime.
Hopefully, someone knows more about it than I do. I know there's a way around it as long as your computer isn't too ancient because I had the same problem once. I just don't remember how I fixed it. I think I ran the setup program from Seagate that came with it (mine was a Seagate, obviously). But I'm not sure.

4-year old Pentium 4 and I am running Win XP. Never had these problems before.

Hmmm. Well, like I said, I don't think it's the drive. You might be able to fix it by just getting yourself a new IDE controller card. I don't think they're expensive. I'm sure someone here knows more than me. Just hang on and don't do anything crazy.

What service pack?
I believe at least SP1 is required for XP to see beyond 137G.
And what file format did you use? FAT32 or NTFS?
Can't remember... would have to look it up... is FAT32 limited to 137G? anybody know off the top of your head?

You might also check whether the jumper on the back of the drive needs to be moved to a different pair of pins.

Yes. Definitely go up to Service Pack 2 if you haven't already. Come to think of it, I think when I got my 160 gig drive, I'd just reinstalled XP and hadn't bothered to do all the updates yet. I'm not entirely sure updating is what did it because I also ran the Seatools at about the same time.

I've downloaded that Western Digital application but that's about it so far. I dont have any free time currently, but on the weekends I will try to do something. I will also download the WinXP SP2.

Let us know what happens. You should apply the changes individually so if one of them works, you'll know which one. Well, you have to do it individually but Just make sure you check to see what results one has before you apply the other.
