Drew Black broken crankshaft 8011 Posts 9/99	Posted - May 7 2005 : 5:54PM I was attempting to upgrade the my.adt mail server software tonight and completely screwed it up. Everyone's mail is gone. Move site from linux box to windows system. apply manual updates to templates. I may just get started on it an hour earlier. [Link]

I'm not sure I would go out and purchase a new program for that number of users. I'm sorry. I'm really frustrated and pissed at the moment. I think that I've lost everyone's emails. [Link]

Drew Black broken crankshaft 8011 Posts 9/99	Posted - May 7 2005 : 11:20PM I have two backups, one of the SQL database and one of the data files stored on the web server. Unfortunately I didn't take the backup snapshots at the same time. the upgrade script failed midstream while updating the database. (it was taking so damn long to tarball all the files I was getting impatient and launched the upgrade program. it failed while adding/removing columns from the database. now I no longer have a way to relate the data files (which have random IDs as names) with their corresponding database records. I do have a complete snapshot of all of the emails. I think I'll just write a program that recursively travels the folder paths, parses out the rctp-to fields and resends the emails to the corresponding users. That way people will at least have copies of everything. [Link]

Do you not have any complete backups that would put the files in synch, albeit with the newer emails missing? At any rate, I'm not desperately in need of any of my old mail, but having the mailbox would be nice. Please let us know what you decide ASAP, as that account is what I use to deal with vendors as well as ADT'ers, and I'll have to go change my account at their sites if you're not going to put up a new/fixed server. Click to expand You mentioned it was a Linux box, so the emails are probably in mbox or maildir format and if you took a snapshot of the complete mail directory it should be fairly easy to parse, programs and scripts for that do already exist. Click to expand The backups are really old. This is the only linux box I'm running these days. It's running redhat 9.0 (or something around that era) and it hasn't been supported by Redhat for well over a year. The system is a genuine PITA from a maintenance perspective for a non-linux type like myself. It's also an ancient pentium pro 200 system. I'm working on trying to get the new version of the software installed on another server right now. Not having much luck though. [Link]

That's how I do daily backups in FreeBSD - it makes sure that all files are copied from the same atomic point in time. I'm pretty sure Windows can't do this. Backups (restores especially) have never been a priority for Microsoft anyway. [Link]
