Also, WinAVI converter works on the stubborn and crap video formats (like wmv and real media). Probably one of the easiest programs for newbs to use. I think there an option for you to choose which burning software you want to use (for this and ConvertX), though the one I use is also capable of ripping copyrighted DVDs, so I won't mention it.
