We have a new login/logout mechanism and completely rewritten profile system. To see your profile click the Profile link near the top of the page.

Post questions, comments, bug reports here.

The "location" field in the General tab on my profile is showing something that I was using ~ a month ago. It is not what is actually showing up in my posts.

Is there a spot to click to see other users profiles (I may just be missing it) or do I have to enter their URL?

Click the profile Icon for the moment (just above a user's post.) You can also click their name in the member list.

In about 30 minutes you'll be able to click their name and avatar on the left of each post to get to a user's profile.

I think it's a definite improvement, especially allowing people to post links and such. I'm sure we'll become aware of more members who have interesting blogs, and so on.

We have lots more in the works. This profile thingy is just a basic framework for us to tie together all of the community aspects of the site. We'll start connecting lots of different data bits from our reviews, price search and forum databases to user's profiles. A profile will begin to take on much more significance than just being some basic forum background info. Think along the lines of myspace meets flickr with a few other really cool (and unique) features.

Though I do appreciate the work you are putting into the profile system, the main reason I check out this board will still be for people's posts.

Also are profiles subject to any sort of "moderation"? How?

I see the potential for some extremely offensive profiles. (I'm sure you have thought of this already when you were designing it, it's just the first time I've seen the system and thought over the possibilities)

EDIT:spelling was goofy

Yes, we have the ability and systems to moderate people's profiles. I don't haven't really thought of any new guidelines that should apply to profiles that don't already apply to the forum. I'm sure we'll update the forum etiquette to be a site-wide etiquette document at some point in the near future.

That being said, I do not intend to actively police the written content or links of member's profiles. We also do not intend to expand moderator's responsibilities to cover profiles.

We will be adding photo/image moderators at some point soon. These folks will be responsible for keeping a general eye on the images that get uploaded to our servers.

I've just experienced it Drew. I was on this morning and logged in using the old system. Then came back after lunch and what to my wonder as the saying goes. But neato!

Thanks.

I guess what I mean is more a question of abuse then offensive content. Could I (for example) post link to a bit torrent file of a full version of a copyrighted DVD without getting booted off the system?

(not something I would do, but allowing personal links allows for lots of P2P activity, I would think)

I'm not trying to pester you about security, I'm just curious.

Nice system, but I can't see my current avatar quote. It does show up though.

The links under contact on the public page are not all working, the myspace link goes to https://www.adultdvdtalk.com/http%3A%2F%2Fwww%2Emyspace%2Ecom%2Fjacc0, icq goes to https://www.adultdvdtalk.com/icq and msn to https://www.adultdvdtalk.com/msn

In the new system there are two fields: one is for location and one is the avatar quote. I did not take a snapshot of the latest data prior to putting the new profiles live. So there may be some small discrepancies like these.

I removed the ICQ and MSN links temporarily until I can get the correct linking formats for them.

Damn, there is an "About" section, I never know what to put in there.
The Yahoo link updates nicely when I am online.

Is there a setting for how many recent posts you see when you click on somebody's profile?

All in all, nice work Drew!

Question: I never log out, is it wise to logout once and login again with the new system?

The avatar quote issue should be fixed.

The logging in and out uses the same code base that's been around since early January. It shouldn't make a difference.

BTW, the ICQ link is in but I still have to figure out the MSN messenger format.

MSN is something like [a href="msnim:chat?contact=me@example.com "]Click to chat![/a] with < for the [ of course. It only works if you use the official MSN messenger, which I don't have, so I can't test it.
(don't we have a code tag, to post stuff like this?)

Use the "Avatar quote" box (further down the page, under the line that lets you specify the number of posts per page you want) to do what you used to use the "location" field for.

Sounds awesome! Don't be discouraged if people don't start using all of it right away. Often, it takes people a while to really appreciate and start to use all the tools at their disposal. People have been used to the limitations of the way things were for a long time so they might not think about certain things that will be readily available.

But speaking for myself, I appreciate the work you're putting into this.

okay, so i made my profile private--because i'm like that--and when i clicked my avatar even i couldn't look at it. i had to request to. so, then i approved the request and i STILL can't look at it. it asks me to request it again.

also, are you actually allowed to change your display name? because i can't do it. does it change for your posts? or only in your profile?

This sounds like a bug. I'll check it later this morning.

You should also be able to change you display name, but only for profiles at the moment. It doesn't change in the forum.

I've been working on some stuff. These kinds of errors will happen periodically while I post changes back and forth from our development server to the production site. They should usually only last 5 minutes or so unless I really screwed something up.

Are we going to get those new smilies in the forum?

Yes, but most likely not until the end of June. I have to rewrite a big chunk of the forum code and the new smilies/BBCode will be part of it. In the process I'll need to write something that converts all of the old forum posts to the new format. There's quite a bit involved but it will be much easier to add forum features when that's complete.
