I am going to be involved in the construction of a website and could use a few pointers, such as host, servers, links and all that bullshit.
If anyone has suggestions or just friendly advice, please feel free to email me.....I am open to just about anything, well almost.

Is it an adult site? Static web pages? Blog content?

Well I built my site so I'll do my best to help you with anything I can. But as others have pointed we need to start some where. Feel free to post here or email me. I'll try to check this thread often to see if I can be helpful.

I am working on my own little geocities site, but I am asking for imput for a bigger website for a Babe Ruth League that I was asked to be Secretary of the league.
We are going to be the host city for the 2007 Ohio Valley Regional Tournament and need to create a website that folks are going to depend on for hotel, eateries and general attractions as this tournament will be the state champions from 7 different states. It will consists of many links to these businesses, plus maybe a little blog area....not sure as we are just in the baby stages of this major project.

You might see my picture on there, but it definately WON'T be 'adult content'......sorry.

My offer still stands, the code behind my site don't have "adult" variable

I suck at graphics, I made mine and it took me FOREVER because I'm so anal-retentive...

You need help on coding the page in PHP/MySQL I know I can help, pretty graphics you'll need to look to someone more talented than myself

hosting and name registration can be dirt cheap. the problem will be the design, creating content and maintenance.

I use this company for my web hosting, they're cheap and good enough for me.

I have a bit more experience designing web pages so I didn't look at any web hosts that provide web templates.

this site may help in the search for a web host

LOL. I knew it would be a site that had something to do with BALLS.

Designing a good site is not an easy task.

Make sure you work out following things:

- main purpose (informational, presentational, entertainment)
- content (what you want to publish, what sections can you devide it in, your possible navigation. Also whether the content will be fixed. At some point you may want to expand your website with different sections, etc. The design must be flexible enough to allow it w/o having to rebuild the whole thing)
- main target audience (male, female, young, old, expected computer/internet experience, etc. This is important for visual design/layout and userfriendliness)
- technical functionality (you mentioned blogs. that will probably require some database connectivity and scripting. Should people be able to register, make ticket reservations and stuff like that?)

I like a frame design so navigation is always visible.

Visually a header and sidebar like ADT works well. You can even have a small footer if you want to display contact information.

email me and I can send you the link to my nascar pool to show you what I mean.

having a small database back end for the database is easy to do. that may allow you to provide a search feature and makes it easier to add content.

I would strongly recommend against using frames.

I'm not a fan of frames either.

Tables or cascading style sheets is the key.... I need to order that book on cascading style sheets. It's supposed to help you design site without tables at all - supposedly making pages load even faster.

I find them easy to work with but they're not for everyone. I personally hate having to scroll to the top of the current page to navigate to another page. The only problem I've ever had is pop up menus and dhtml don't work properly. The solution for pop up menus is here

here's a good online reference to HTML and cascading style sheets. (note, I linked to a faster mirror version of the site, the original site is here)
