I'm a porn star and a computer nerd. This thread is dedicated to challenging me with tech talk, q&a, etc. (I get more excited about css code than porn - that's how much of a nerd I am!) So challenge me, if you may.
(I have a shoot tomorrow, so I might be delayed a day on my responses.) Ciao! Mina

How you are on XHTML design philosophy? Are you one of the purists who believe you should use divs and spans and apply layout totally with CSS, or do you allow tables because it's a helluvalot easier to accomplish the same thing sometimes?
I used to the battles between the two camps on a website I enjoyed, it was amazing the amount of heat something like this would generate.

What about database design and layout. Are you for strict normalization or are you good with normalization. I too like CSS, in fact I rebuilt my site using CSS mainly and only using tables to do certain data
Speaking of... How do you feel about PHP and frameworks? Currently I'm knee-deep in CakePHP.
And as for languages, do you prefer PHP or ASP? What is your favorite database to work with (Access/MySQl/Orical, ect.)?
Do you prefer numerically key arrays or associative keyed array, or do you use both where appropriate?
Are you a Linux/Unix gal or a Windows gal?

Oh my. Lots of questions.
Again I apologize for the delay; I was dominated all day for the site whippedass.com. (It's not out yet, but I'll keep you posted.)
Ok. Let's begin...
______
ZOLD - echo "marry me";
**Can't! I'm already married. Sorry to disappoint.
So.. what have you been coding lately?
**I can't disclose the names of my clients, but I generally do boutique sites for small companies, entrepreneurs and artists. Generally, my technique is XHTML, CSS, maybe some or an AJAX menu with some occasional flash elements like galleries, movie players or animations, depending on the client.
Also, what kind of hardware do you have?
**We'll I'm not enough of a geek to have my own hosting server, but I do have a few computers in my office - all MAC's. They range from an old 450mhz G4 to a Mac Pro to an IMac. Consider me a collector. I always deck out the ram and I have raids for storage.

**I am a bit of a purist, using divs and spans as much as possible. It keeps the code clean and I enjoy tweaking my margins and padding by pixels. There's so much you can do with divs. With CSS, I can create floating divisions by using a and marking them "." instead of a "#" in my CSS code, and embed them within my wrappers or other divs. I even create menus with CSS. Now coming up with IE hacks for them is a pain, but I still love them. I occasionally might use tables and still find them appropriate in certain situations, but for the most part, I design using CSS.

**Programming is not my forte, but I still know some PHP and ASP. (I usually handle sales and design, which includes the the html/css build with menu, and hand my work off to a programmer if I need a CMS or custom programming.) Most of my PHP scripting experience involves basic email and submission forms and making mods for CMS. I have very limited ASP experience and it's mainly involved mods for existing e-commerce packages. As far as which language I prefer, definitely PHP. I find it more intuitive to write and I appreciate how I can use it in conjunction with XML and Flash. I'm most familiar with associative keyed arrays, but again, I'm not highly versed in PHP. As far as my server preferences, definitely Linux/Unix with a MySQL database. (I've actually never used Access or Orical.) I know many programmers will diss me for saying this, but I fucking hate Windows! Sorry if I offended.
_________
A few questions for any who want to answer....
Databases: I've only used MySQL, and unfortunately had to work with FoxPro for a very outdated e-commerce site. Access replaced FoxPro, correct? What are your pros and cons with MySQL, Access and Orical?
What are your thoughts on Cold Fusion and Flex?
There are so many ways to create CMS these days. Are any of you versed with using Flash with a MYSQL database? What about using XML with PHP?
Lastly, I have yet to explore the world of Ruby on Rails. Any reviews or comments?

Access didn't replace FoxPro. Fox Software was a standalone company back in the late 80s/early 90s. They quickly gained market share due to their patented Rushmore technology that made FoxPro the fastest PC-based database application on the market. It was quickly embraced by the developer community that was moving away from the old DOS-based dBase. Access existed at the time but it sucked. It was horrible. Embarrassingly horrible.
Fox Software was a small company and eventually was purchased (assimilated?) by Microsoft. FoxPro still exists as a Microsoft produce, though it's not nearly as popular as it once was.
Microsoft Access sucks. It's adequate for keeping track of your album collection, recipes or other simple database tasks. It should never be used for a website that expects to have more than 3 - 5 simultaneous users.
MySQL has become a very good database server. It finally has stored procedures, triggers and other transaction-oriented support. It's better in some ways than MSSQL Server but I still prefer MSSQL. Microsoft SQL Server is an extremely powerful, scalable database server. That's not to say that MySQL can't scale, it just doesn't do it as well.
I haven't used Oracle in 10 years and when I did it was only to write database extraction/conversion programs to move a company from Oracle to Progress. Oracle used to be incredibly expensive. I have no idea what it's like these days.
Haven't used either.
XML in PHP is very widely supported. There's a ton of good references on the web. Can you be a little more specific in how you would like to use XML with PHP? XML is very generic and is used in so many different ways these days that it's hard to comment on the PHP/XML relationship without knowing the application. Are you looking to use XML data for AJAX/DHTML in pages generated by PHP?
I've read a lot of stuff about Ruby on Rails. Apparently it makes it incredibly easy to develop flashy/ajaxy user interfaces. It doesn't scale well though. Maybe they have fixed these issues in newer versions. A year ago it was difficult to scale a ROR site beyond a few hundred simultaneous users on a dedicated server. So the decision to use ROR or not depends a lot on the kind of traffic the site might see.

Regarding the XML/PHP CMS...
I should have been more specific. I'm interested in making my next web project a flash site controlled by XML but I want the CMS to be PHP based. I've also read on ways of connecting flash content directly to a MySQL database, with the CMS being PHP based. Have you explored any of these techniques?
Regarding ROR...
That's interesting that it has or had issues with traffic. I hope they fixed it. I was interested in using it for e-commerce solutions.
Also Social Networking....
...is a big pain in the ass, so I hear. I've been wanting to start up an online community that has a more elegant interface than say phpbb. One of the programmer's I've worked with suggested Jumbla. Many companies offer turn-key packages at high prices. Any other solutions come to mine?

Sorry, I've never had a reason to use Flash.
Here's a good place to start reading about Rails not scaling well.
If you can live with the feature set of a turnkey package that's most likely the best way to go. I've always preferred programs that come with source code so I can tweak things. ADT is almost fully custom and hasn't been updated in 5+ years. It's needs a serious overhaul but I don't have the motivation to do it.
I do agree that social networking is a huge PITA. I happen to like the approach and interface adopted in the new version of Facebook. I'd like to borrow some of their UI features here on ADT.
I did a quick search for Jumbla and didn't find anything. Is that the correct spelling?

I've heard plenty of adult webmasters use Joomla as their CMS. Probably because it's free.
Knowing my luck in these matters, it couldn't have been any other way. *sigh*

Yes, Zoid, sorry to disappoint.
I'm currently working on a CMS that works with MySQL database content in Flash movies with a PHP backend. I'm also wanting to have a portion of the CMS connect to an XML file for an image gallery. Have any of you worked in this area of programming?

Why store the image gallery data as XML if you have a database? What benefits are there to static XML files that outweigh storing the data in a searchable form? Your most likely going to need to store the XML filename in the database anyway if you want to be able to dynamically generate links to the image galleries.
If the data is being provided to you in XML format then just write a simple parser to convert it into MySQL data. XML is structured data which tends to make it straightforward to mimic the structure in database table form.

You're right. I should either go with XML or MySQL to handle the database and not switch back and forth. Setting up for XML is easier for me, but the reason I'm wanting to work with MySQL is because, especially with text in flash, the SEO is better. At least on my current project, I'm going to choose MySQL.
Thanks for the tip. Ciao! Mina

I don't use MS Paint, but rather Adobe Illustrator, and the last illustration I did was about 2 weeks ago. I have a fine art background, so I enjoy illustrating by hand, as well as on the computer. I do it professionally and personally. Do you want to give me a challenge?
And in regards to my hair, I've had it long for the past 13 years and it took me about 4 years to grow it that long.

That's cool. I am familiar with Joomla.
I do small, custom boutique sites. None of my backend work is more complicated than updating Flash XML video and/or image galleries and updating text in a PHP CMS. I consider myself more than a designer than a programmer, but I know enough to make my clients happy.

Hey Mina,
I have a nerdy question for you. Do you like flash drives? I'm kind of obsessed with them lately. I just ordered a 16 GB drive. I'm not sure what I will do with it.
I love portable apps. It's great to have my Firefox, VLC Media player, GIMP, FileZilla, Open Office, IrfanView, Keepass and 7-zip programs available off of my 2 GB drive I carry everywhere.
I've also dedicated one to backing up my Amazon music purchases.

I have several from PQI, Dane-Elec, and Apacer.
